Title: Custom tilesets help plz
Post by: jeistermeister on August 20, 2009, 01:17:51
I want to make my own cool tilesets and i already know the demensions are 384x202 for the whole box thing.
i am having trouble with seeing how big each little build box is. i know they are 24x24 each but i want to know if there is some way to see the demensions of each box when you zoom in and build. I already tryed to draw each line for each box but it ended off being too rough and the in game tileset looked bad.
I really hope there is an easier way to make tilesets in each box...
plz help

Open the default tileset 0, re-save it, and work with that. When you're done, erase the boxes.

But don't erase any in a tile you haven't worked on, or else you'll see a big ugly error screen when you look at the tileset in the editor.

It would be helpful to know which image editing program you use. I think there already are a few topics that provide information on the topic of which program is "best" to use and tricks and stuff you can do with some of the options. Try [search]ing. :)

Tileset0.png in your Data folder already has the tiles marked out, and indeed many people just take advantage of that, however, you are better off using the grid function, present in every image editing program in existence sans MS Paint.  And don't use MS Paint.  MS Paint robs orphans and eats puppies.

9_9 MS Paint is fine, it just lacks any extra features. It's still perfectly usable. (Though other programs are better.)

Actually, it lacks very basic features, like transparency and layers. 9_9

KS supplies transparency, and since when do you use layers for pixel art?

If you change something and you screw up the original.

But that can still be accomplished with careful saving.

MS Paint lacks the following features that I consider essential:
-Transparency of any kind.
-Any sort of proper palette support.  If you save an image as, say, a GIF (which is 256 colors) or a 256-color bitmap (which is 256 colors), it converts your image to use its built-in palette - which is sixteen colors.
-Its JPEG compression is utterly and completely screwed up and useless.
-More than three undos!

I draw in MS Paint for one simple reason: to make things look like they were drawn in MS Paint.

Now, MS Paint can be used to make something that looks good.  A Google Image Search will confirm this.
But, by the same token, a hex editor could be used to make something that looks good.

I would never advise anyone to use Paint for anything, let alone a KS tileset.

But for the love of GIMP, filters and all that is holy, can we get back on topic?

(Incidentally, MS Paint isn't even on my computer anymore, on account of me using Linux.)

You don't absolutely need those features, but I use both of them from time to time when I'm making tilesets.
Its also very useful to have a good color picker, a good curve-line tool, useful zooming, different brush sizes, semi transparent colors, a good select tool, and more than three undos. MS paint has none of these.
