Content Warnings for Level:
Strong Language, Partial Nudity (Like the kind you'd see in an old painting), Mention/Discussion of Suicide.

Hello everyone! I'm MeltyFrankie/ThatTooie/ThatTwoGuy - many of yall probably already know me from the Discord, but this is my first time posting to the forum, so I figured I ought to at least give a cursory introduction here. With that being said, allow me to now introduce my level.

My Island Swallowed Me started life as something that was supposed to just be a quick little design exercise. Something where I'd use the Knytt Stories engine to make a brief level that exhibited the classic platforming design structure - "Introduce a gimmick, build on a gimmick. Repeat until level is over." But then, as I continued to work on it, a funny thing happened where I realized that I cared about this little level a lot more than was warranted for an "exercise." I kept discovering unique uses for the small palette of level objects I was allowing myself to use. I decided I wanted to make my own tiles. I decided to make "graffiti" for certain parts of the level so there would be some really striking moments. On and on this went, until after more than a year of work, the level is finally done. I absolutely don't regret the time spent, but goodness me what a long time for a "little design exercise!"

To speak about the level itself - My Island Swallowed Me is a large-ish level that aims to combine, perhaps even juxtapose, traditional platforming level design with an atmosphere that is moody and strange. This level is then book ended by a few cutscenes that straddle the line between being grounded in the world of the fiction and being pure poetic abstraction. It also has a little bit of exploration to it, and a little pinch of so-called "Metroidvania" design for good measure.

Inspirations include the likes of the Mega Man series, Rain World, and Shovel Knight, to name just a few.

Also, if you're curious - the Streamer Edition is identical to the normal version, save that the nipples in the parts with partial nudity have been censored. They're really nothing gratuitous in the first place, but I'm sure that Youtube/Twitch would disagree with me, hence the Streamer Edition exists.

I had the privilege of beta testing this level (twice), so I can vouch for its quality. It is certainly one of the more unique KS levels I have ever played, though its deeper themes may not be for those who are not in a stable place emotionally.

It is overall a fairly quick level, and shouldn't take more than an hour to complete fully. You have my word that it will be worth your time.
Things to remember when writing figures of speech and sound:
The power of poetry comes from the ability to defy logic. Defy logic often.

Use a metaphor and tell us that your lover is the sky. Tell us that your lover is the sky. When you do that, we won't believe you. We won't believe you because saying so makes no sense, but we'll see a meaning. We'll see a meaning.

The other thing is the ability to be remembered. Love anything.

Love anything

This is so great!

The platformer aspects alone would have made for an enjoyable level, so the surprise layer of 'prepare to vicariously experience an existential crisis' was wild (in a good way!). There really isn't another level quite like it.

The little secrets around the map were excellent and felt rewarding to a player like myself whose first instinct when getting a powerup is to look around earlier parts of the level.

I loved the graffiti art as well both in terms of your artistic ability and what they added to the overall atmosphere.

After playing again, I was able to experience the music choices that were not present in the beta, and I found them quite nice indeed. That said, I do have a few minor issues to report, to be fixed whenever convenient:

Spoiler: minor issues (click to show/hide)

Those are the only issues I found. Apologies for not catching them during the beta.

I really liked this level, especially the umbrella challenge part, it's wonderful what you can do with the most overused tileset ever. It felt so fresh.

Played it, enjoyed the graphics on the walls a lot. By looking at them, my mind went places about the whereabouts of the graffiti gal, I really enjoyed these short moments of wonder...

Thank you for enjoying the level everyone! An updated version with bug fixes, tweaked music and SFX is coming Soon(TM).

I'm especially glad to hear that everyone enjoyed the work I did with the tilesets. A lot of love and care went into making them my own, even in spite of their common use, and I'm glad that paid off both for me and for others.

I'm also pleased to hear that the endings made people Feel Things. That's also something I put a lot of myself into, so achieving at least some kind of effect is... vindicating.

Those are the only issues I found. Apologies for not catching them during the beta.

It's really not a problem. Stuff like this is always bound to slip by, and having to fix it is hardly an inconvenience either.
