It's not a difficulty curve, it's difficulty broken line. The difficulty curve mustn't grow by 10 or more times at the very end (Sacred Grounds).

@GreyFace: I believe the dialogues on any given play session run slowly the first time you read them, then speed up if you die and try again.
Yes, it appears so. But Restart resets that.
