A Long Walk (.01) [Short/Story/Beta]
« on: July 21, 2012, 18:57:22 »
Hi there!
These are the first 11 screens from my upcoming level, A long walk.
Better known by its old name, Wild World, this level was lost long ago (explained in the preview topic)

Since I've commenced rebuilding it, I thought it might be nice to release at least a short preview of the story. This preview reveals basic plot and demonstrates one of the lovely tilesets Egomassive has made for the level. There's a lot more to the story than what is revealed, so hopefully this isn't to much of a spoiler :)

Oh and also, I don't really know how to incorporate this but icicle kindly made me this depiction of Juni in the Savanna area. I'll probably just post it along with the official release.
Spoiler: (click to show/hide)

Please send forth your comments,
Dj

This is a really nice intro to your level; it looks fantastic and I'm really looking forward to it  :)
Just a few things in the text that're a little odd;
Spoiler: spelling and grammar (click to show/hide)

I agree with the first and the last, but I think I like the way the middle one sounds as it is.

No worries, it's all ultimately your creativity after all  ;)
The only other thing I'd say about the middle one is that you've already used cows (plural) in an earlier scene so it sounds like a bit of a continuity faux-pas.

Erm, now I think about it; the first one could equally be "[...]sought to find some medicine[...]" as it can mean either the past-tense of seek or an endeavour that was undertaken; either a literal or figurative search, such as a personal goal.

Looking good. That's a neat way to tell the story. Normally I'd say this has too much story for the beginning of a game, but the interactive aspect keeps it from being a problem. I'm looking forward to the rest of the story. *gives star*

Oh!
Well this is awkward, I literally just deleted the beta version.
No worries, I'll just whip up a new one and edit the link.
Thanks for the catch and uh.. sorry :P

Now I feel stupid but I couldn't find a button there that would make the file download.

Thanks for re-uploading anyway.

Interesting, I see a large download button..
Unfortunately it is java based, so I can't get you a direct link all too easily.
If it still isn't working I can get another mirror together :)

Clicking that just refreshes the page. It doesn't do anything else for me.

Sorry, I ought to have specified that before.

Thanks, and sorry for being awkward. Just played it.

It was cool, a nice, original idea. I look forward to seeing the finished version!
One criticism; I let myself drown in the frame with Juni in the boat, and was sent right back to the start. I think it would not be unwise to put in some saves or auto-saving shifts every few screens just to protect the player. One thing you find is that players will try everything to go everywhere, even to the point of foolishness. It would be rather unpleasant to die even further on and go back to the very start.
