Directory exists
« on: November 28, 2010, 21:40:20 »
So I'm trying to make a new level, but when I do, I come up with the message "Error: Directory exists". I put in random things, but nothing happens. What should I do? Do I need to reinstall KS? I dunno.

Are you entering a name for the level as well as your name when making the level, and is it unique?

If you keep them empty, it will give this error.

level name: asdfghjkl
author: ieatatsonic

I suppose that the author doesn't have to be different, just the level name, right?

Have a look at your Worlds folder to see if there's any weirdly-named level folder inside. If that's not the case, you're probably better off reinstalling KS.

I think someone else had this issue before, but I can't remember how it ended up, sorry.

Hmm, so I originally downloaded KS in a zip, so I extracted it again.
When I play it, one of the levels that there is is called (). It doesn't appear in the worlds folder, though.

This may be completely unrelated, but I recall some issues with KS level editor appeared when the path was too long. In other words, try moving the KS directory to the root directory, e.g. C:\Knytt Stories\, and see if the problem persists.

Also, when reinstalling, did you simply extract the game files into the same folder as before? And the KS editor still gives you the same mistake? If yes, try extracting to a completely new folder and trying the editor again, because KS automatically incorporates whatever levels it finds in Worlds. If the editor works, you can simply copy all of the levels you want to keep to the new Worlds folder - just take care to not copy any potentially problematic levels, i.e. folders with strange names ;)

And finally, the only time I had a () level listed by the game, it didn't appear that way in the Worlds folder. It appeared as a normal [author] - [level name] folder; the problem was in the world.ini file.

The problem you're having is indeed by this debugged level that appears as (). I suspect that if you find and fix this level, your problem is gone.

It can very well be one of your own levels that causes this. You might be able to quickly find out by trying to play the () level.

Also, the "too long path issue" is only a problem when you want to run the Knytt Levels mananger made by TheoX and its path is too long so it generates an exception when launching it.

I played it, and it turned out to be the template/default level.

Since there is no template/default level normally present, this means you've created an empty level that now gives you this problem.

the template/default level is the one that appears when you make a new level. It's 2 platforms with a win tile in the center of it. There is a "world" called template, and is made by nifflas, but I'm afraid that if I delete that there would be some bug with loading the default layout when making a new level.

The Template.bin file in the Data folder contains the template level (it's basically a .knytt.bin file for that one-room default level). Anything within the World folder can be safely removed. I'm also pretty sure Nifflas has never made any level called 'template', so you can remove it without problems.

Thanks! I deleted the one in the worlds folder, and I was able to make a new level! Again, thank you!
