And I think I remember posting that everybody could just adblock avatars (or signatures, for that matter -those can be even more annoying, because bigger and more at once)

Actually, you can disable both entirely in your profile options.

Anyway, after a quick search I haven't found anything about that animated avatar rule, so I suspect it was on the pre-crash forum.  Or maybe I'm just confused.

As far as I know, we never had this rule. The only thing that ever happened, was when someone had this very annoying flashing avatar, which we removed because it was too annoying. Perhaps you've seen this as: I cannot use animated avatars at all. Its just one of those: it makes sense to not post annoying things, issues.

oh, I know that, but usually I do like to see the avatar (and to a lesser extend the signatures) of the persons who post -easy visual identification.
