Transcendence is a rogue-like space scrolling shooter with story elements. You can make mods if you know XML.

Spoiler: screenies (click to show/hide)

Website: http://www.neurohack.com/transcendence/

Mods and more: http://xelerus.de

How to use mods: If the Trans101 folder doesn't have the "Extensions" folder in it, make it. Extract or unzip the files to that extensions folder. WARNING: some have bugs and may not work.

You can do whatever you want. You aren't limited to doing the stinking mission. You can be a pirate, a military dude, whatever! It's even funner with mods. Imagine destroying everything in one hit. BEST. FUN. EVER.  :)

That does not make it a rougelike, although is a step closer. I suggest you wiki the term (i would give a full explanation here, but i admit i too am a little hazy on the bounds of Roguelike)
I'm not dead. Not entirely. And yes, I'm embarrassed by most of the posts I made here.

"The roguelike is a sub-genre of role-playing video games, characterized by randomization for replayability, permanent death, and turn-based movement. Many early roguelikes featured ASCII graphics. Games are typically dungeon crawls, with many monsters, items, and environmental features. Computer roguelikes usually employ the majority of the keyboard to facilitate interaction with items and the environment. The name of the genre comes from the 1980 game Rogue." Okay, I guess not roguelike, but still.

"Sandbox" is the generally accepted term for such a game.

Okay, I'll change it.

P.S. Sometimes, while playing, it will crash.
