[Challenge / Normal] My Super Secret Basement
« on: August 31, 2010, 12:26:21 »
Presenting my first decent-sized level in three years! It was made for PeppyHare4000's 'Sections' competition. I used this level to get familiar with custom objects and flag warps.

What secrets are concealed within the dark basement of Juni's humble abode?

The answer to this question is implausible, to say the least.

Regarding the floating chunk of sand, is it supposed to look like this?

EDIT: Okay, after playing it further, I have to wonder if you tested the level at all before posting it; no offense. The main thing is that the custom objects are out of position, and in some areas completely obstruct the player's view of a portion of the screen. Also, the difficulty hits a sudden spike to hard/very hard at the fire area. But those problems all seem to turn up in the later half or so. The beginning half is quite good.

EDIT2: The last area (I assume this is the last, anyway...) makes up for everything :D

EDIT3: Hmm. There's no way you could have done all this shift work and not noticed COs being out of place. Maybe something is going funny on my end.

Thanks ortoslon, I was also going to suggest that. Let me know if it works, Gorfinhofin.

All COs worked just fine here. Not sure how I feel about the level. It seems a lot of work was put into it, and that's very impressive. The fire area was very disturbing, and the final area very confusing and disturbing. I never figured out how to complete the level; no matter what I do, I always end up with no powerups and falling down that hole to the "give up <> try again" screen. I kind of didn't like the visuals - too simplistic in most areas, not many details, and not very immersive.

I was able to finish by systematically trying not to loose my power ups.  Extremely luck based I would say.  I kept thinking I was going to loop back again until the moment I got the ending.

Definitely a surprising amount of work, and some very in depth credits!

I guess I would give it a 3 of 5.  You get a lot for hard work, and original thoughts, concepts, and visuals, but it looses a lot for me in incoherence.  Mind you, incoherence is good if its done right, but yf your going to be incoherent with me, give me a good reason why and tell me first!  :)  I don't think any of the visuals bugged me, but neither where they spectacular.  The purple wave texture and the fire room where both quite interesting effects though.

I really like most of the tilesets, but I have to say that the red key area was harder than just normal, because you have little time to react once you get in a screen. It takes planning and you don't have the time for that.

Also I got to the end on the 2nd try, and I might've missed some of the level because of that.

yohji: I guess I will work on that next time. What would be more immersive?

Headgrinder: Uh... the incoherence is because Juni is actually in some sort of hallucinated Hell caused by drugs mixed with cat-loss-depression. This is canon.

egomassive: I'm glad you liked it! I was worried people wouldn't recognize what it was due to its simplicity, so your comment makes me happy.

LPChip: Sorry! I made the red key area last and I kind of rushed it. I was mostly just trying to rip off Monocromatica Grotta. Also, the way I did it with the custom objects made making layout changes a real hassle, so I suppose I got complacent. As for the ending part, you missed nothing, in fact you probably went through in the ideal way.

Drugs?  Seriously?  What drugs?  See, that is really a very important plot point and would help make the whole game make much more since!  How comes you not tell us there be drugs?  Where be drugs?

I figured it would be obvious to anyone who played both Oh Man Go Time and Oh Man Go Time 2: Requiem for a Drugs.
