Manual or keyboard sheet or icon legend
« on: March 29, 2009, 07:23:08 »
Hi guys,

I just discovered Knytt Stories.. its quite fun.

I have search high and low for a manual or list of keyboard shortcust or a legend of the icons/opjects that give you more abilities but have found nothing.

Can anyone point me in the direction of one?

I have just found that ball with an up-arrow above it is and I dont remember what it does or how to trigger all of the special moves like cloing.

PS Is there a way to zoom out and get a map of the areas I have visited so far?

Thanks.

First of all, welcome. ^-^
Second, you may or may not know that this forum broke not too long ago and we're still kind of recovering from that.
Now, the pink orb makes Juni run faster, the brown orb with lines in it makes Juni climb up walls, the blue one with one arrow above it is High-Jump. Guess what it does. X) The one with a line and an arrow is Double-Jump. The weird machine thing makes Juni glow red when enemies are near or when detecting tiles are placed. The hologram makes Juni create a clone so foes won't see her (they can still kill her, though.) The umbrella makes Juni float through the air. And the keys open various locks in the Objects and Areas bank. The eye makes Juni able to see ghosts. :O

Now, controls.
...I think I got 'em all.

Ah.. thanks.

To help me (any any other person who prefers visuals to words) I have made this simple page:

http://wolispace.com/knytt

Im not sure which bit of your keys were spoilers.. but I put in all of the stuff I gleaned from the tutorial.

What would be ideal is if the Q key showed this info.. maybe the next update?

Thanks for the help.

Fortunately for me this was a simple task (only a handful of items to identify).

As for the tutorial:
The tutorial has all of this information.

Yes.. this is where I gatherd the info. Its a beautiful, clear, simple, logical and straight-forward tutorial.  One of the best I have encountered.

However, we (us newbies) can't keep exiting the game we are playing to play through the tutorial just get a reminder of an object or a keystroke.

So I hope my little guide is useful and ideally this would be available from the menu or the Q key etc etc..

Ok.. back to it.. I just learnt how to use double jump to get up a wall with a one-block overhang!  Ah.. the joys of learning a new game for the first time.

You know, I really doubt that there is actual need for any extensive description/manul stuff. Most people get used to everything they need to know to play KS fairly easily. It's really not that complicated. At least that's what I would have thought up to now...

However, we (us newbies) can't keep exiting the game we are playing to play through the tutorial just get a reminder of an object or a keystroke.

The game uses the arrows, then five other keys. There are nine basic objects. Three of the keys don't do anything if you don't have the relevant powerup. If you forget the keybindings, screw around until you figure out the ones you need. If you forget what a specific object does, likewise screw around. The game is not complex. Most levels introduce the powerups gradually, so you'll notice a difference after getting one. If you don't, screw around until you do. If you really have trouble, just play the tutorial again. Personally, I think it's easier to just play the tutorial again rather than to seek out a webpage that explains the use of the objects without even letting you see them in action (and force you to use them to progress) as the tutorial does.
good bye

Also, there's the NiffWiki which has some information about the powerups too. And if you think more detailed information is needed, you're welcome to contribute! :)

Yes, I agree its a simple enough game to play and learn.. a joy in fact.

That wiki page is what I was hoping would exist but could not find.. thanks for that!

PS do we pronounce it "nit stories" or 'night stories"?

That's the 'proper' pronunciation, but everyone says it differently.

's how everyone should pronounce it. (If they know how.)

Now, this topic was about a reference for KS commands and objects. Back on-topic.

Since I've been downloading and playing quite a bit of different things as of late, I could be off a bit here but:

I swear I was playing a level where something said that if I hold a particular key, she would rise faster/slower when holding the umbrella on an updraft.  I honestly don't remember anything else because I've not had occasion to use it until now.  Naturally now I can't find the level that holds this seemingly extraneous information.

Any thoughts?  Sadly all of the updrafts in any game I'm currently in are dangerous/short/non-existent, so experimenting to find the right button is going slow.

the key to hold is S, and it's probably found in Sky Flower, by Nifflas.
