[Tileset] Underground lab
« on: April 15, 2010, 17:26:39 »
I made this tileset for the current KS level competition.

I thought it was fun to use, so I figured I'd put it up here for two reasons:

1) If anyone wishes to use it or modify it and use it that's totally fine (just credit me for it)

2) Some constructive criticism would be nice. I wish to make more levels and hence more tilesets. If I'm doing something wrong now would be a good time to know ;)

Pretty nice overall, but a bit bland. Maybe the highlights should be brighter, or maybe smoother if they are brighter. Do you use GIMP? That would make everything a lot easier, especially the little dinky things.

Thanks for your reply pumpkin (Love your avatar by the way, big fan of Tool C)p)

I use GraphicsGale, but I think it's still pretty simple to do something like that. But what do you mean by highlights? The round bright things, or maybe the edges of the platforms?

Chiefly the edges of the platforms, also a darker edge around things that you want the player to walk or climb on should have a bit of a darker or black, to make it stand out as foreground.
Also... You are the first person on this forum to know who Tool is. huh?

I see your point, I'll try to redo it to see if I can make it better. Thank you!

The main problem with the tileset is indeed that it's too bland; nothing has any texture at all.  The colors are also poorly chosen - too much contrast in some places, too little in others, and too much saturation overall.  Pretty much everything in the bottom left is too scribbly/messy/MSPainty.

Thank you for your reply :D

I'll redo the colors, and will try to find some way to add texture. I also see what you mean with scribbly. I'm thinking about redoing that section completely. Hmm.. getting some ideas :shifty:

But for now I sleep. Thank you for your help!

Do you mind if I make a remix of this? Hopefully I can do it well...

Cool! Do you have time to do a remix/improvement/different version of one of my tilesets?

Atm I'm way to busy.. School takes up most of my time.

But I think that it would be fun, and I would learn from it. And since summer isn't too far away, maybe I could try it then?

Definitely! just give me a heads up which one you'd like to do. I've got 3 total. Redneck tileset, Atlantis tileset, and my most recent Jack an the Beanstalk tileset.

Thank you so much :)

I am working on this, but I have very little time these days. But I'll bump this thread in a month or so..
