Welcome to the
Frequently Asked Questions page. Here you will find answers to common questions.
It is a useful read if you are new to the forums and/or Nifflas' games.
Nifflas RelatedNifflas is "Nicklas Nygren", and he's a game developer primarily. This forum is about his creations (mostly video games), and community surrounding them. His website is
here.
Older games, music, and various sources and utilities are at the
NiffPage.
Nifflas generally requires that you ask him personally before you use content from his games (and be aware he may say no; it is his choice). Please also notice that not all content for his games is always made by him; art and music may require further permission from other persons.

This question has been asked a few times and we have a summary

It is recommended that you click the "report to moderator" button, and describe the issues. Please do not post demanding an action or informing another member of a rule; just report information to a moderator.

or otherwise known as hidden stars are symbols used to congratulate a member on a post/project/idea/etc. You may give a member a star for a post by clicking the up arrow next to that person's star count to the left of the post itself. The page will refresh and that person will recieve the star. More information on hidden stars can be found
here.
General/MiscHold down the Alt key and press the Print Screen (prtscr) button while the window you want to screenshot is active. This should copy it to the clipboard. Then, paste the image into an image editor.

#niffchat (Forum Chat) F.A.Q.Yes. Go to
#niffchat. (Or, if you already have your own IRC client, enter the command "/server irc.esper.net" followed by the command "/join #niffchat".)
See
this page for basics. IRC is a text-based 'chat', and #niffchat is our 'chatroom'.
If an op in #niffchat were to set #niffchat to +m, you would still be able to speak and be 'heard' (hence the name 'voice'). Of course, this almost never happens in #niffchat, so it's largely symbolic- registered forum members get voiced, usually.
See
this for other IRC clients. (They are programs that connect you to a chat).
Knytt Stories F.A.Q.Start
here, with the official expansions, and
here with the third-party level pack. Beyond that, you can browse through the
Knytt Stories Level Archive to find levels you might be interested in playing.
Open Knytt Stories, and click on the "Install Level" button. Drag the .knytt.bin file over the Knytt Stories window, and release. Wait for installation to complete. Alternatively, click on the "Browse" button on the Install Level screen, and find the .knytt.bin file yourself. Click "OK", and wait for installation to complete.
You should attempt to redownload the file. In most cases it is the result of the download being interupted. You should also attempt to delete/bypass your browser's cache. Be sure that you've tried redownloading before posting for help.
In some cases, .knytt.bin files won't install due to the naming scheme used by the author on the world's folder. Knytt Stories can't install a level if the folder has one of the invalid characters in its name. If you run into this problem, tell the level author and ask them (nicely) to upload a fixed version.
You may get the manual
here. There is also an entire board
here for level making help. Once you've become accustomed to level editing, the
Knytt Stories Level Composer becomes quite useful for making quick changes to the world.ini file- the file that contains all the other data in a level, short of the level map itself.
Flags are a particularly complex part of level editing; most levels don't involve them. They are bit complicated to explain here, however;
EarthBound015's seminar gives a good explanation of one of the uses of flags. If in doubt you might post
here after expirimenting.
In the directory of the level you want to use the tileset it ([Wherever you've installed this]/Knytt Stories/Worlds/Yourname - Yourlevel), make a folder called "Tilesets". Then, move the tilesets you want to use into this folder and name them "Tileset#", where "#" is any number between 0 and 255. Then, in the editor, open up your level, and find the number of the tileset you just put in in one of the "Tileset" boxes. Then, you can use the tileset, so long as it's the right size, .png, and doesn't have any completely transparent squares. Note, however, that to use a custom tileset, you must replace one of the default tilesets for that level.
Move the Knytt Stories folder to somewhere where the pathname will be different. Having a pathname that is too long will prevent the Manager from working properly. For example, if you have it on your desktop, the pathname might be C:\Users\Yourname\Documents and Settings\Desktop\Knytt Stories or something. This is too long. Try moving the folder to somewhere like just C:\Games\Knytt Stories.
First: edit the metadata of your level using the Knytt Stories Manager (in the editor, under the menu "3rd Party Tools", "Knytt Stories Manager (world properties)".). Make sure to set title and author to what you want them to be, if they aren't already what you want, and set the type and difficulty of your level. You can also change your level's icon and info screen, and its intro and ending cutscenes. Next, with your level open in the editor, under the menu "Level", select "Compress". Then, upload the resulting .knytt.bin file to
The Knytt Stories Level Arhive, making sure you've followed
the level submission rules.
These are all types of bugs in Knytt Stories levels. An SGE is a Slight Graphical Error- something wrong with the graphics on one screen, like a stray tile, or a mistake of perspective. A wallswim is what happens when the player crosses the border of a screen, and ends up in a tile on layer 3 (or water). You have to treat each screen in a level as a separate entity, and make sure that layer 3 tiles always line up to an adjacent screen. A void screen is the in-game result of what happens when it is possible for the player to reach screens that do not have anything in them. (It's called a void screen because it has a purple background with the word "VOID" on it.)
FiNCK F.A.Q.Official third-party levels can be found
here. Levels created after FiNCK's release can be seen
here.
We have a board
here for FiNCK level editing.
Saira F.A.Q.We have a section of the forum dedicated for just that
here. It is also notable that the in-game PDA can also solve puzzles for you if you're really stuck.
We have a board
here for Saira level editing.
