[challenge/normal/long] A Knytt in Time
« on: February 12, 2010, 17:40:37 »
I present to you my first Knytt level, "A Knytt in Time". I consider this to be a legacy level. I've built upon themes and Knytt culture established in older levels. Foremost of these, it is a legend of Juni.

As far as design is concerned, this project started with the intention to use 3 custom tilesets to enrich and blend with the default sets. All gradients and songs were to be default. All cutscenes would be hand drawn and digitally mastered. As the level creation advanced I kept replacing more and more of the standard material. Here's how it ended:

Screens = over 700
Custom tileset = 8
Custom gradients = 19
Cutscenes = 10
Custom music = 0
Custom objects = 0
References to other levels = 8
Endings = 3

Spoiler: level references (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: no custom objects (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: no custom music (click to show/hide)

I've made a walkthrough for people who have trouble. If you didn't have trouble but want to know if you've missed anything it is also helpful.
I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed making it.

version 1.2, 02/15/2010: corrected some spelling errors.
version 1.3, 02/24/2010: Fixed an SGE in the forest, improved save point locations.
version 1.4, 03/03/2010: More SGE's in well and gorge, Missing Music and Ambi in 2 screens.
version 1.5, 03/20/2010: More SGE's in well, Logic issue with tackle box.
LoCP v1.0, 03/20/2010: New easy version released.
LoCP v1.1, 03/22/2010: Removing one of the dangers allowed players to get stuck.

I was one of the beta testers for this level, so I guess I'm biased, but anyway, I would like to recommend it as one of the best KS levels I've ever played. The complexity of stuff here pretty much rivals Farik's levels, and it's a terrific journey.

I started playing this, the graphics are great. Maybe I was inatentive, but the storyline isn't obvious for me.

EPIC WIN

This level just made me find some faith in Knytt Stories again.
I remember the old days when levels like this came out every week...
Great level!  :)

Audial experimentations (Read: demos)
Crazy metal band I sing and play bass/electric guitar in

"Throwback" - a KS level in progress
I seem to recall starting a shift-animation frenzy and increased fascination in Juni's transparent body.

I second Widget's verdit of awesmoe; in fact, I think this may be a case where capitalisation is warranted. So: AWESMOE!

I've only just started playing this, and had to stop because I don't have the time to really play much, at the moment, but what you've done with the Mertynn Forest/Mertynn Caves tilesets is wonderful. It feels like the first time the tilesets have been used to full advantage.

Just started playing, and it looks really nice!  :D

PS: I put the level in the release candidate version of Knytt Stories DS, as a way to test the strength of the final version  :) .

i will just round out the popular vote and say...

awesmoe :D

i only just strated the other day... but it's quite great... in all aspects: game play, story line, aesthetics... and i really enjoy how u put a few simple signs that make it a really good first timers level (to the point where i thought how great it would be if it were included in one of the first bundle packs when you first download knytt stories ;) )... but i've been playing for a while now so i'm probably a bit numb to distinguishing difficulties so this is probably a bit tough for a first timer... or am i wrong?

anywho... i might not be able to distinguish difficulties from an outside perspective that well anymore... but i'm still not that great at actually doing these levels lolz... so i'm stuck :(

I got kinda lost now, but I have to say, that I haven't played such a good level for so long... too long

If I had fav level list, it would go there immediately! :)

Great job

I think there's an SGE at the entrance to the Hamster Cave, though.

I debated difficulty levels with my beta testers. In the end I decided normal was best.
Spoiler: more (click to show/hide)

btw: Glad you all like it so much. I put a lot of work into this.
@ AClockworkLemon: The tilesets in my level that include Mertynn parts are not to be used. But, there's a set I released with Markham Carroll's permission on my gaming blog. egomassive.com. It includes all the Mertynn parts and more.
@ Hmpf: I don't see anything. Can you be more specific?

Okay, the girl you show the umbrella is now hungry. I saw an obvious-looking bunch of berries in the forest area, but even after I grab them, I can't give them to the kid. Help...
