None. You throw all 1,000 in a room and say, "The poisoned bottle is in there. I found it." :awsum:

Wait, no.. 10.

Edit: The ceiling of log21000

Guess 1: They are Frence so there is no logic behind their actions.

Guess 2: good food?

Good guesses, but consider this (un)helpful hint:

Well, you could save your prisoners and test the wine on rats in extremely small doses.

Or, you could have the same one prisoner drink from one bottle at a time at 20 hour intervals, unless wine HAS to be available at the start of the party.

This is a good one. Did you come up with it?

Wine has to be available at the start of the party. So, do some math:

You have 24 hours. Death can occur at any time between 10 and 20 hours. You have 1000 bottles to test. Since you have to know for sure which bottle has the poison, you have to have to use a special way to use the prisoners.

Am I correct in thinking each prisoner can only be tested once in the 24 hour interval?

No. Each prisoner can be tested as many times as needed, but you need a way to determine which bottle has the poison.

And also, Deep Embrace, you've got the right concept but no answer.

10

If you assign each bottle with a binary number between 1 and 999 (0000000001 and 1111100111), and assign 10 prisoners to a letter, you can make a sort of grid.
Each prisoner drinks from every bottle that has a 1 in their column.
When the prisoners die, you make a number with 1's for the prisoners that died, and 0's for the rest. That is your bottle.

Oh, and if none of them die, its the bottle that you didn't test.

I know a way of doing it with 9, but that would break the time limit. :/
I'll think about it some more.

And so, the king of Nifflasland consulted his most trusted forum advisers. kaizoman666 said he could do it with less than 10 prisoners, but had to leave before he could tell everyone how. They puzzled over it for 12 hours, before they realized it was too late to test.

So there.

Edit:
Am I correct in thinking each prisoner can only be tested once in the 24 hour interval?
No. Each prisoner can be tested as many times as needed, but you need a way to determine which bottle has the poison.
So can you find a way to test a prisoner twice?

And also, Deep Embrace, you've got the right concept but no answer.
Assign binary numbers, divvy up the prisoners in half and half again.. however you do it, it takes 10 prisoners minimum.

Well, my 9 prisoner plan would work if you got lucky and the prisoners died within 10 hours, but if they don't, then you can't preform the two tests that are needed.
I'm stuck.

Edit
Oh wait, it wouldn't work anyways. 10 people are needed.

Nope, its possible with less. I'll give you a hint: Convert 1000 from decimal to binary.

Kaizo, is the answer one?

You can be completely sure with only one, since if he or she dies after drinking the first bottle.. then there ya go.
