Game will not run
« on: March 06, 2009, 04:29:39 »
I try to run the game and I get an "Error" window that says:
"Cannot load Download.mfx.  This object might need an external program or library not yet installed."

First and foremost, welcome to the forum. You are new, right? I haven't seen you here before...
Second, pretty much it says the .mfx file is missing. I don't play Knytt Experiment (so why am I in this board? X)), so I don't know how to fix it, but you can try re-installing it. Or it could be due to the server's recent crashing that you may or may not have known about.

EDIT: Did you ? ing is very useful. And don't give up on your if it doesn't get results the first time. It's just like Google, but limited to this one site.

Kevin, you need the download object for MMF2. I looked and I can't seem to find it, but I know it's around.  :/

Is this only available from Clickteam (as in only they can distribute it) or is it a file Nifflas made that he can distribute?

Normally it should be included with the executable and nothing would need to be done on your part for the game to work.

Try downloading the file again, erasing the old one, and reinstalling.

Are you using a windows computer to run this game (also, which version?), because using Wine to run MMF2 games will result in this kind of error sometimes. If you're using a Unix, then try CrossOver instead, I found I got good results.

Try to keep the game in a folder that isn't buried too deep (like C://nifflas/KE/ is better than C://Really long folder name/Yet another long folder name/And this is where I'll keep my nifflas games/), some of Nifflas' games are known to have trouble when run from a long folder name.

Post back when you've tried all that, and let us know...

Are you using a windows version prior to windows 2000? (like 95/NT/98/ME)

That shouldn't matter; I have Windows Vista and can't run Knytt Experiment.
The funny thing is, I have MMF2 build 247 working normally, and I have the Download Object. And KE still doesn't work. XD
Hey I'm back, I'm not so back

I don't suppose it is Vista 64bit?  That's what I'm using.
So, does it just not work for vista? :)

It could very well be caused by it being 64 bit. See if enabling 32bit compatibility makes it work.

How do I enable 32 bit compatibility?

It is done automatically for all 32bit apps.

There are, however, compatibility modes for older windows versions.  Right click on the exe and select properties and then go to the compatibility tab.  There is also a special compatibility dialog available elsewhere that will allow some games to work -- if I can find it again.

The problem might be Vista's DEP or something. I know KE has to access the internet to update its world; that might cause problems with Windows's firewall.

I have Vista, and if I recall, the only thing I had to do to make KE work was to do the DEP thing the first time I ran the .exe.
good bye

I was unable to run the KS editor, and changed DEP as that seemed the most common answer. However the other answer, moving the file to a shorter extension, was actually the answer. I just downloaded KE and it started up and worked fine for me, and I'm also on Vista. So, maybe DEP is the problem?

Simply start at the beginning, go on till you reach the end.... then stop.
