[Medium] [Challenge] [Easy] [KS+] Inside Knyttout
« on: September 03, 2024, 17:59:21 »

Inside Out movie was always on the watch list and i never played it until last month, and then sequel come. I instantly loved both movies, i cried many times and i have good time with my little sister.

Since i put delay to End of The 13th Universe, Inside Knyttout was like instant idea and i never get bored or something while making it. But i had some problems, plot and level itself. And i decided, OK, i loved The Machine by Nifflas, that was my first Knytt Stories level i played 15y ago. That was concept, level was not so hard since i put Inside Out Mind World into KS with no much problems. Gameplay was another problem, IO movie have characters/emotions. I decided to make Emotions as a separated devices which have keys instead of actual characters.

But, but... Who is main character? A Consciousness! Juni's Consciousness is main character, she operated with Emotions/Devices.

Plot? Well, The Machine start was a my level start. Aliens destroyed most of living beings with Machine, world is depressed, and Juni too. But Juni's Consciousness was guilty for her depression because she hide 4 Emotion keys around Mind World because she though Juni don't need them because of depressed state of world after annihilation.

Player mission is to help Juni's Consciousness to find keys and put the state of Juni's mind before alien annihilation. Henna's letter was spark which force Juni to start mission to turn off the Machine...

The zoom into Juni's mind was a really creative transition!

From a gameplay perspective, I think the level could really benefit from being more compact. It's quite a massive level and much of it involves running along nearly identical screens with no challenges (which was a struggle to remain engaged with personally).

Warps/shifts might help with this. For example, instead of Juni physically running 20+ screens to reach the end of the pipe, you could teleport her to the end in a way that feels seamless to the player.  That said, this approach might not be true to your vision or the world you're recreating (I've never seen the movies) - either way keep it up!

I feel like the contiguous nature of the level is a massive improvement upon making the level feel more surmountable, but the last area was just too much open space for me. Overall, I think it's a great improvement. And the story and message at the end is very sweet.

I would recommend using detector blocks to show how to get to the purple key like you used to lead through the maze if only because it's easy to miss. For example the picture shows you where the keys are, but the red key shows you the waterfall so you know what to look for in the last area to find the key. You find the waterfall, "follow" it upward if you can and you can get the key just based on the picture. But the purple key shows the ghost tiles which while part of the area are not cleanly leading you to the purple key. Because you have the bright color lines/shapes that lead to the purple key and not directly from the ghost block area even though they're close together.

Agree with the above posters. I enjoyed the level a fair bit, it has a nice vibe, but I encourage you to continue reducing the amount of hallway screens in your future creations. Have you played Knytt Syndromes by Dessgeega? It's a level that gives some KS creation advice. It's cool.

Thank you all for useful info.

The "huge level" vibe is just a representation of Riley's mind from movie. It is huge and when you think, Joy was quite tired.

But overall i started with simple concept, but then i changed it over time because i want to put 1st and 2nd movies details in level design. It ended up huge. And messy. But this level is my huge love letter to Inside Out movie, Gosh i loved it instantly.
