Yep, those are just saves.  No difference between the three whatsoever.

No difference whatsoever? :O Why I could fill a barrel with all the reasons they're different.

  • The graphics for each button are different.
  • They get different savegame folders.
  • One can exist without the others
  • One is more popular to use (1) others are less (2,3)
  • They are in different X positions on the selection screen.
No difference, indeed.

You can always find differences, but for the game it doesn't matter which saveslot you choose, the experience will be the same. Its so you can let someone else play the game without messing up your savegame.

A lot of differences, indeed.

it doesn't matter which saveslot you choose, the experience will be the same.
I disagree with this. If you choose saveslot two or three in the beginning, you will undoubtedly be wondering why you left the saveslot(s) before it unused. If all your saveslots are full, you may feel regret depending on which one you decide to delete.

Hm, you're right.
(on all accounts except the X (ahem) position, at least)

Here's another interesting fact: They also differ in distance from the menu strip.  That is to say, after resetting the game or changing sound options, starting the game may be more physically taxing depending on the file you use.

Good one, although by X position I did mean the x position of their corresponding buttons on the main menu screen.

Good one, although by X position I did mean the x position of their corresponding buttons on the main menu screen.
Then, my dear friend, I am quite humbly confused.

Perhaps you can see why?
