So, what really is the point to this shortcut?  I mean you'd have to go back over everything to get all the coins anyway...

It's a shortcut for the people too lazy to use the warp zone. :P

I think the best part of these shortcuts is the fact that they provide a puzzle.

Nifflas added them because the inspired game (super mario bros 2) has them too.
