[Challenge / Puzzle] Fallen Star
« on: May 18, 2009, 18:58:43 »
NOTICE: This is a repost of my thread from the old forums. As I have no desire to muss up the knyttlevels site with various different beta releases, I'll be uploading the beta versions to mediafire and once/if I finish it I will upload to knyytlevels.

Greetings everyone.

This is my first attempt at a world for Knytt Stories. Please realize that this is a work in progress and there may be bugs, graphical errors, layering errors, or simply uncompleted areas. I will attempt to update this after each major section is completed, or whenever I feel that I've done enough to warrent a new beta version.

Notes:
 - There will be no custom music or tilesets used. I will only be using those items that come by default with Knyyt Stories. This isn't due to lack of talent or creativity but the attempt to make full use of the potential already in the engine. Plus, I feel that using the existing tilesets and music keeps the level in the same feeling as Nifflas' own.
 - There will be multiple endings, some dependent on whether or not the player takes the time to hunt down all of the secrets, hints, and other goodies.

The Story:
 - One day, when Juni was out sailing on the sea, a large object fell from the sky. It was a huge ball of fire, like a falling star, that crashed into the sea with violent results. Juni and her small boat were thrown amongst the waves, eventually crash landing on an unknown coast. Can Juni find a way back home, or better yet, find the remains of the fallen star?

Estimated Difficulty: Hard

Estimated Size (When Completed): Large

Current Version: v0.3.5

Current Room Count: 99

Current Known Issues:
 - There is one way to reach void areas without cheating.
 - The default title screen is in use.
 - The default intro scene is in use.
 - The default game icon is in use.

Spoiler: Screenshots (click to show/hide)

Interesting. Sounds similar to an RPG idea I've had for a while (that will remain a secret. :U). Keep it up!

Thanks. I actually had a version of this beyond 3.5 that I never uploaded, which is a shame as most of Mt. Shinock had been finished along with various other tweaks. Now of course I can't find the thing so I may have to start over from the one I salvaged from the old forums.

I'll check my backups at home and see what I can find...

A couple of things: one, you can't post betas here (or anywhere, for that matter.) Two, the third screenshot is too flat. Avoid flat land. It's boring. :/ Put in hills and stuff.

Pumpkinbot,

In regards to the flat screenshot, well, it's meant to be flat. The general area in a flat barren desert, and that particular area is a small settlement. It was designed to be flat in that particular spot. The caves, the opening greens, mid-greens, and Mt. Shinock are nowhere near as flat as this one particular spot.

Secondly, that seems rather bizarre to not be able to upload betas ANYWHERE. On the original forum there was a place for betas and previews, and now we just have 'planning previews' and 'done' sections? I perfectly understand that we're not uploading betas or any levels to the forum anymore, but if I have a willing host whether it be myself or a free one, I don't see the issue. Having a beta people can download allows proper review and critique instead of basing everything off of a couple of small screenshots of something much larger. If a mod wishes to remove my link, that's perfectly fine and I'll simply send beta copies upon request.

Looks great. Especially for a first. Very Nifflas-y (that's always good).
Keep it up.

Thanks, StaticRomantic. It is my intention to hopefully capture Nifflas' style of Knyyt design in the level.

I'm not a fan of really off the wall tilesets or placing every little moving object and graphic piece to clutter up the screen. I try to make things fit logically with the environment so it becomes moreso a living, breathing world instead of a game. At least, that's what I want it to feel like in the end.
