Title: [Environmental][Easy] Fear V2.1...
Post by: AClockworkLemon on May 24, 2009, 07:00:37
Here's my third level: Fear

It's quite a small level, but it took me ages and includes a modified tileset140 and a couple of non-moving CO's that i used in layer 7.

You can play in in either KS or KSAdvanced, the only difference being that in KSA some of the areas have the darkness effect.I couldn't be bothered putting the credits in-game, so here they are:

Level Design:
a ClockWork Lemon

Tilesets:
A ClocWork Lemon
Mr. Monkey
Nifflas

Music:
Nifflas

Heres the Link-
http://www.knyttlevels.com/levels/A%20ClockWork%20Lemon%20-%20Fear%20V2%28fixed%29.knytt.bin

Hope you guys like it! C)p

V2 is out! it includes:
-Bugs mentioned in this forum fixed
-Better Music
-KS white savepoints as well as the red KSA savepoints
-A new area
-a few more ENEMIES!! (The level is gonna be a Challenge/Normal)
-Oh yeah, and the random pit that you die when you hit the floor has water in it

Fun level, my favorite one from you yet! The tileset is really fantastic, you actually managed to make it look 2.5D!
The level wasn't supposed to be scary, was it? Because it wasn't. May I suggest that you add save points? It's a bit frustrating to die when you try to explore a gap that doesn't have anything visibly dangerous on it and have to start over. Just because it's an environmental doesn't mean you don't need save points.

2.5d made it confusing  :S

*downloading*
you hooked me with the title. I hope It isn't too scary!   ;)

EDIT
finished. this is a great level, short and smart. it's also very innovative with adding that new dimension. well done! however I did find a wallswim.

Spoiler: wallswim (click to show/hide)

2.5d made it confusing :S
2.5d Means that the graphics look 3d, but the gameplay is still 2d, which is hard to pull off well in KS.

In the next version (V2), I'll fix those bugs etc, and add a new area down that hole near the double-jump.

This was great! The pseudo-isometricism worked really well.

However, there were too many sudden death situations for a level with no savepoints. Also the wall on the far left had a slight issue where it seemed to switch from normal 2D to isometric. No screenie to exemplify I'm afraid.

Excellent work!

I have to say, this level was not very interesting to me. When the impression of the 2.5D ( XD )  effect had gone of i found nothing interesting and nothing going on. :P I could say, it was a little boring..

The 2.5D stuff is pretty neat, but on the whole, this level is meh.

The intro and ending stuff, and the title, are like totally unrelated to the actual level. Sure, it uses the dark forest tileset thing, but it has cheerful music playing over it. The 2.5D made it more interesting, but I found it weird that grass grew at the "back" of areas and stuff hanging down from the ceiling hung from the "front". (Though to be fair I can't think of any way around this.) The level relies too heavily on the novelty of the 2.5D effect. Also the level is like totally lifeless- I don't remember even seeing, say, any wind or rain. In all this feels like the start of a bigger level. The final screen is really neat, and I thought that the level would pick up from there and get better. But it didn't.

Right after I started I went right a bit and down a bit and found myself in a pit I had to ctrl-r out of. Then I got two powerups and then, whilst exploring, found this really tall wall. In the interests of exploration, I slid down the wall to look around the bottom. It turned out the bottom was fatal, and nothing hinted at this before I touched it. :S These things weren't really that inconveniencing, but still.

Anyway like I said the 2.5D stuff is really neat, but I'd like to see it used to greater effect in a larger, more developed level. The last screen really is neat, and I'd like to see more like it.

(Incidentally, I only remember seeing 2.5D in KS done once before, and not as well or as consistently as here. So, the technical achievement is great on its own.)

The 2,5d at the end with Juni going in the background, with COs, is really suprising. It's a shame there isn't more effects like this in the rest of the level, which works quite well but is a bit monotonous (and cruelly lacks savepoints)

I can't say I liked this. One thing I really dislike in a custom level is a pit death. No water, no spikes, just juni exploding as soon as she touches the bottom of the screen. It looks stupid. In this game it is especially annoying because you establish a lot of climbing and vertical movement through shafts and having one that abritrarily kills you is really sloppy.

Spoiler: (click to show/hide)

A few screens on, you can fall into a pit of....ground...that kills you for some mysterious reason.
Spoiler: (click to show/hide)

This is all made worse by the lack of save points and it would be easily solved by the addition of some water.

Here is an area you can get trapped in if you didn't get the wallclimb first
Spoiler: (click to show/hide)

And an area on the roof that hasn't had the 2.5d effect applied to it
Spoiler: (click to show/hide)

I just didn't like it. It felt sloppy and uninteresting. The best thing I can say about it is that the final screen was impressive and I'd like to see it applied to a better level.

@Ghost head & Googoobjoob: the pit where you which you die if you hit the bottom is to simulate KSA's death-by-falling.

Also, the pit near the far left is going to have something else in it in the new version, and the level is going from Environmental to Challenge (Normal)

Ill make sure to fix the bugs etc mentioned by you guys, thanks for your opinions.

Honestly have to wonder why you'd want to simulate that. 9_9

I do like the 2.5 effect, though I wish there were more variety. It's just... bland.

(Incidentally, I only remember seeing 2.5D in KS done once before, and not as well or as consistently as here. So, the technical achievement is great on its own.)

What other level was it done in?

Planet M143, by MNM. (It's not very good, but the [unfortunately very short] 2.5D section is a highlight.)

Pip's stuff is really neat but it's more like 2.25D than 2.5D, since it doesn't really give as much impression of depth the way an isometric dealy does.

Title: Re: [Environmental][Easy] Fear...

That would be impossible, as something that has only one dimension cannot be seen (because it is simply a hypothetical singular point in space(I was studying dimensions in science today lol))

Edit: my bad, i was thinking of 0D

@@ special_d - Seriously, get KSAdvanced, its worth it. (and it makes the lower sections of my level slightly spookier...)(this goes to everyone looking at my post)

Damage from falling is a bad idea. Which are the pits that kill you and which are the shafts that you can climb up and down in? It's just not the right game for it. And it looks stupid to boot when you die by touching the bottom of the screen.

Also, yes you can make a 1D KS level. There would only be lateral movement. There would be no jumping or climbing. If I were making it, it would be kind of like the oubliette I suppose but with all of those traps in a straight line rather than a winding catacomb.

Great work on the 3-D effects in this one, but there are alot of very irritating things about this one, WHY DO YOU HAVE A GRUDGE AGAINST SAVE POINTS???
Similar to portable time warp is the fact that cheery music is playing throughout the whole level. It drove me crazy, crazy, I was crazy once, they locked me in the cupboard, I liked it there, I died there, they buried me in the garden. They planted three flowers, two grew up, one grew down. It tickled my nose, it drove me crazy, crazy, crazy, I was crazy once, they locked me in the cupboard...Erm...Yeah...

Anyway, try to make it a little bit more varied as well, the 3-D is cool, but it kinda got a little dull after a while...I'll hang onto it, but I muted the music the instant it looped lol. X)

I played v2 in KSA and I'm a little disappointed. it's not that I don't think it's an improvement, it certainly is. You fixed all the wallswims except for one in the new area, and it's quite a bit bigger. But it's a challenge now. I like environmentals, and the recent trend has been challenge levels. It's good, but I was glad to get an environmental and you threw a bunch of enemies all over it.

... yeah, i was trying to spice it up a little :/... I could release a enviro version, im not sure.
As it is im starting on a new level (environmental hopefully) that utilises the itrometricism but is slightly less bland and samey (and hopefully even BIGGER!)  C)p

Hmm, I should have gotten KSA when I played it, but I really liked the new version. The monsters walk straight of the edge, but that's yet another reason to play it on KSA... :/

Releasing a purely environmental version of it might not be such a bad idea really, it was sort of designed as an environmental, so it would be kinda cool to see a version with no monsters at all, it'd be really fun to play through. C)

I played the KSA version and the monsters still walk off edges. KSA really doesn't make the level that different except for a few effects like blood rain. I actually don't like the bloody rain because It seems out of place, the level isn't scary at all.

I just recced this level over in the League of Crap Players thread (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=2807.msg32372#msg32372), but in case you didn't see it, I wanted to put my feedback here, too:
Quote
Despite what others have said -- and despite the low likelihood of actual death, coupled with reasonably-placed savepoints -- I absolutely found this level spooky even at its least-scary points. The striking "2.5-d" visual effect, combined with the use of tilesets, default and custom objects, ambient sound and music all worked to create a feeling of trepidation, almost anxiety. Very unusual for an otherwise exploration-focussed level. The only other level (playable by us Crap Players) I can think of that achieves a similarly fear-evocative atmosphere is Dessgeega's 'Torchlight'.

I enjoyed the heck out of this level, with goosebumps all the way. And I'm usually not a fan of 'scary' things like the horror genres of literature and film. I found this level deeply absorbing, though, to the point that I felt compelled to play through to the end -- including checking and then re-checking every room's every nook and cranny -- while my dinner cooled mostly-untouched beside the computer.

The alleged issue with the grass being behind Juni and the stuff hanging from above seeming to be in front of it wasn't an issue to me at all; it just seemed like a natural function of the 2.5-d stylisation. The stark black and white was a good choice, though I do find myself wondering if the same effect could be achieved with colour, even in a limited, perhaps two-colour, palette. Hopefully the negative feedback you received when you released the initial version of the level hasn't discouraged you (or others) from trying to do another 2.5-d level someday.

Oh, by the way, I only played the level in KS 1.2.1, not KSA... do you think I should install KSA for the full effect?

Personally, I would suggest KSA (But that is personal). Thanks for the (http://e.deviantart.net/emoticons/p/plusfav.gif) on LoCP, btw. I am not currently working on another 2.5d spooky/whatever level, but I might yet :]
