Title: [community collaboration/artistic] Great Art~
Post by: Soron on May 22, 2009, 11:53:35
So Basically--
It has been nearly two years since I started thinking about this project but until now I'm really taking it into full action.
The thing with 'Great Art' is that it's a community collaboration meaning alot of people work on it, something like gaia if you've ever heard of it.

General concept--
The idea here is to successfully design a level which has custom tilesets, custom music and custom objects. From here we can go into more detail. This level is basically an artistic theme where we have different people from the community (nifforumers!) participate in making screens for the level, I hope this isn't too complicated. This level consists of two areas, on the right the art exhibit (made entirely on singly designed screens for the purpose of looks) and on the left the exhibit (An exhibit of screens all made by the same participant). I guess I'm going to have to go into further basic design and rules.

Explaining the design theme and how it works--
So basically I get requests from people who would like to participate in the project and I send them the link (or you in any case). When the participant receives the link what they should do is, (1) Install the level, you will find the already finished screens, (2) begin adding onto the level by either making a 1 screen piece or an up to 12 screen exhibit, (3) finish what they are doing and send it back to me in no longer than 3 days.

I'm going to have to go into further depth on what to do when you get the level in the sense of designing, look at this picture: (http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/6650/crazy.png)
This shows that you design the art exhibit screens to the right and the exhibits to the left, the highlighted screen is the starting point. I'll further explain in a PM to participants and hand you the link to the level, for now I'm just making sure it operates properly.

Explanatory pictures:-

Spoiler: (click to show/hide)
The above one is the starting room, the below one is one of the screens I made with a description.

(Issues regarding the credits)
Please remind me to put your name into the credits until giving to someone else, this is my responsibility and I really need to do it, unless you're willing to put it in yourself.
(Issues regarding non-acceptance of screens or exhibits)
If for any reason I can't except your screen or exhibit due to malfunction in the music files, tilesets or custom objects or objectionable content I only have the choice to either give you another 3 days to fix it or hand an earlier version of the project without your screens on it to someone else.

If you have any questions about this project please ask.

Don't forget to volunteer!

Progress:-
22/5/09:- The project has began.
24/5/09:- Salmoneus has contributed.
27/5/09:- Firecat has contributed.
28/5/09:- Dandelion had contributed.
Note: been away for a short time but too long to upload on date :I
1/6/09:- Dynamite has contributed.
4/6/09:- Feline monstrosity has contributed.
Note: 10/6/09, Sorry for being gone so long and not getting much done with the project, It's been exam week and a rough week too, tomorrow is the last day so I'll start getting contributors this Wednesday.
20/6/09:- Pick yer Poison has contributed.
Note: 1/16/10 It's been loads of months and I didn't do much. Pick yer poison volunteered to take the project into his own hands so I gave it to him and now he's the moderator of it.

Best of luck! I'd love to help, but my artistic skills tend to be a little lacking. Can't wait to see the finished project, though!

Are we allowed to use our own tilesets? If so we need to agree on what tilesets will be overwritten. I may join in later once I get an idea of what I actually want to do.

After reading this it seems like a lot of fun... but I still don't understand what the difference between the Art Exhibit and the Exhibit is?
Title: Re: [community collaboration/artistic] Great Art~
Post by: Soron on May 25, 2009, 14:26:11
Well the exhibit is an entire exhibit or a set of screens made by the participant with up to a twelve screen limit, the art exhibit is a long walk of individual screens with a limit of 2 screens per participant.
I think I wrote that.

Dandelion: as for overwriting the tilesets whichever one is not in use you can overwrite, there are after all 255 spaces.
Then again If someone is willing to use a tileset that was overwritten they can find it in another worlds directory and overwrite an unused tileset to use the one they wanted to use.

Firecat is currently working on the project <-- (25/5/09)

When will the level be released to the public?

Most likely after I can't find anyone else to work on it, then I will do a bit of cleaning and release it :P
I hope to get done by late this month or early next month.

Sounds awesome. :)

I'll definitely contribute in the near future, but I can't at the moment. I need to take the ACT in a few days, so I need to study. I'll post back here when I'm ready to work on my part.

That would be great! I really need some new contributors  X)
If anyone else is interested please feel welcome, anyone could contribute, you only have to do 1 or 2 screens at the least.

If we contribute, do we have to make our own tilesets to use? Or can we use someone else's or the default ones? If we don't have to make our own, I'll be glad to pitch a screen or two in.

You can use the default ones. Most people are as far as I know.

I'd happily do a 1-screen shortie.
PM me when it's ready.

I was thinking of using the tileset i used in FEAR - with the isometric ground etc... would that be ok?

I apologize for the necro post, but is this still going? If it's just sitting in a pile of demotivation, I'd be more than happy to give it another exhibit or two as a pick-me-up or something.

It's been several months since anything happened with this project. I think it's officially dead by now. :/

However.

With Soron's permission, I would like to adopt this. I really like the idea, and I'd like to see it completed. :D (Let's just hope Soron responds to this. He hasn't been to the forum for about a month. :/)

You know what I always say, go 4 it.
(entire project PM'ed)
My absence is due to school, exams and things, sorry I couldn't come on more often :(
The Project kinda died with me after getting bored.

Sweeeet. Thanks!

I'm going to mainly stick with the rules that Soron estabilished for this, since they don't really have many holes in it. I'd like volunteering to be posted in the forum so as to make figuring out who volunteered first and such easier, although the submissions themselves will be distributed via PM. When giving me a submission, I also want you to tell me what tileset numbers you used; I will make a .txt file of which tilesets are being used to include with the level so that nobody ends up screwing up someone else's exhibits by removing their tilesets. You may only write over a tileset if it's not already listed as being used. And when overwriting default tilesets, please use common sense. If possible, try to overwrite the less useful tilesets.

Also, when making a submission, I expect every exit but one (at the opposite end as the entrance) to be closed. This may seem like common sense, but there's already an existing exhibit which showcases this. *glances at Soron* And needless to say, it should be impossible to die, not counting Ctrl+R, obviously.

Let the submissions begin! (although I'm gonna add a couple things of my own on first. :shifty:)
