Title: uhhh... glitch?
Post by: steynj on May 20, 2009, 07:43:35
When I open the game up via Mushroom Engine.exe and then load 'Walking on Mushrooms', a random sound plays and there's large black and white squares in some random pattern all over the screen.

Help, anyone?

The file could be corrupt. Or you should check whats inside the folder.

Download the game again and make sure the size of the file when it finishes is the size it's supposed to be.

That's whats supposed to happen. Read the readme that comes with the game.

I agree that its a bit confusing to see this. I think it would be better of you get a message telling: "Impossible situation" before or after you made the impossible situation. But I guess that reading the readme before playing (as it says so in the title) explains enough. If people don't read that, will they read this forum, I ask?

I move like this
        ----- x
        -     - - - - - - - - -
   !  <--   |
- - - - - -
x  mario start position,
<---   the path of mario,
- - -, | wall,
! error start

means: jump from one platform on second one square down
and than it makes error
---------
And why are here inpossible situations? The game isn't done?
And enemies can move? On my computer they are not moving!

Read the readme file.

If you finish the game, it will play back following the mario rules in the steps you've played it. If you fall down so much, it means that in the end video you'll jump up this much, but that is impossible. Basically see it, that you cannot fall too much or you'll die, but jumping can be as high as you want. Also, take note of the amount of rings. But then again, also this is being stated clearly in the readme file.

We didn't want to put there any sort of text like "Impossible situation", since, well, If you make usually some sort of error to appear in a game, it doesn't say "Error appeared!".

As LPChip said :), please read the readme. The impossible situations are what work as the "enemy" in the game.

To win the level, exit the screen on the top (as if you were falling down)

If we added the "Impossible Situation" I'd feel that we'd give away too much about the game. It's more cool if the player is confused at the start, and eventually figure out what's actually going on.

Think of it a bit like Avoid the Evil Space Eel which is for musical people who are good at telling the sounds apart. Not everyone has the capacity to play that game, but I don't think that makes the game bad; patapon for example is too easy for my taste since it's made to be playable even by people who's not that musical. It's the same with the Mushroom engine; not everybody might be able to figure out what's going on, but it's a more rewarding experience for those who can. An "impossible situation" text would ruin the game for those people, and to be honest, I think that aspect of the game is more important than making everyone understand it. Not all games are for everyone.

That is good advice... anyway, if you mess around with it, experiment, read the readme, and, again, mess around, you'll do just fine. Think of doing everything backwards...

That didn't work for me. I quit the game and never played it again.

Nah, I read the read-me a few days after I was confused. I suddenly realised what was going on so I played for a bit.  XD
