A Foreign Land
I've decided to start making a level for knytt stories. I have most of the areas mapped and planned. It will be around 200 screens, minus the final boss, in at least 6 or 7 areas. There will be a boss at the end.

Plot: Juni goes to sleep one night and ends up in a strange but beautiful place.  She meets the Queen of Dreams, who wants her to help save the Dream World from the Nightmare King's evil influence.  She has to figure out how to leave the dreams (and nightmares) and defeat the Nightmare King.

Progress: (updated 20090925)
Screens Made more than 133/200 (more than 67%)
Mapped/Planned 200/200
Music 75% (still need boss music, but may have to wait a bit)
Boss 25% (have ideas rough drafted, have to implement)
Current Task: get music for boss, make/change powerup icons (4/5), make next area
Now that school's started, I have a lot less time to work on this. Currently my focus is on beautifying the current areas, instead of making new ones.

Betatesters: 4/5 spots taken, pm me if you would like to betatest!

mostly boss music, but i'll use the KS built-in music for everything else

Update (May 20, 2009)

Juni has been trapped in a dream-world and cannot escape. She must explore the world and find something that will let her escape this world and go back home. She must also find the rest of the plot before...I don't know. The world dies and she is vanished into nothingness, maybe.
It sounds very interesting. Maybe if you don't get out of the dream world in time, you begin to have a nightmare (that can still be escaped, but is a lot harder). Or you could make it a series of dreams that she must get through, and your actions determine how hard the dream or nightmare is?

could get complicated, but i like the idea.  Implementing something like that into the level now.

Sorry about that, but I at one point added all the information to the main post but forgot to delete them (something else distracted me and I forgot about it).
And making it a hot topic was not an intention. Anyway, it's fixed now.

EDIT: Even without the extra replies it's now a hot topic anyway XD. oh well.

I have added some screenshots and updated the progress a little bit.  Also wanted to mention that the main post has been updated a lot (now accepting betatesters!) so make sure to check it again.

Actually, I updated/added more after the screenshots were taken... 9_9
Around the same time I release the current beta (beta for a teaser XD) to the testers I will upload the screens with all the changes. (screens 2, 3, 4, 5 all have new background goodness by now)

again, I have added more background, but the screenshots were taken before then.  NEW new screenshots will be released at the same time as the beta.

Just kidding... anyway, what method are you using to create cut scenes? It shouldn't take you that long... though, I probably couldn't find the time to do them myself XD! Anyway, unless they are long cut scenes, you should be able to make them really quickly.

So... are you using the idea of a dream becoming a nightmare if you stay in it to long? It would be complicated... but maybe flag warps take you through the nightmare upon returning to a previous place? And if you have one path you want them to take, maybe a layer 2 block could be placed before the entrance, for disguise? Just a thought...

i'm thinking that, after the game (and the nightmare king) is beaten, you can replay it to find more secrets (one or two per area). You will then see the nightmare creatures that are changing the dream. You saw them earlier from afar during a transition between two worlds, but only then do you see them.

that's as clear as i can make it, sorry.

the *most* recent screens are not uploaded yet, but I'm working on it. My current avatar is a screenie, but I will have more coming.

Update (September 2, 2009) *mega-bump*

New beta version for testers coming out ASAP, hopefully tonight, but no later than Friday afternoon.
LOTS of bugfixes (some not easily noticeable) and new powerup system.

Who thinks a public beta/demo is a good idea? If I get at least 5 answers 'yes', I'll work on a slight modification (some parts shortened/skipped) and release it on knyttlevels.

Right now, creating new content will take a while, as I'm probably at the most complex area (due to shiftscenes), so right now mostly I can make minor changes.
