Title: [Hard?] [Miscellaneous/Miscellaneous] Teenhmifnoeafgil
Post by: KG on April 24, 2009, 06:38:27
StaticRomantic sent me a message saying this level is deserving of debate and asked if I was going to post it here.
I wasn't, but I'm a nice guy so I can comply.
And by 'comply' I mean copy/paste stuff from the old forum:

Teenhmifnoeafgil (http://www.mediafire.com/?fnlyogu0mim).

This level was made for "Knytt Stories 1.0.4". Due to the greater quality of shifts in the more recent version(s), playing this level in said recent version(s) will cause certain parts of the level to go by more quickly than originally intended.

So I guess, in order to experience the level as it was originally intended, you can play it with the older version of Knytt Stories. Or you could play it in the newer version and see how ridiculous a certain part can be.
If you get there, yeah. It'll be obvious.

Yes.
I'm sort of... taking a break, again, from Knytt Stories. I have been working on a level on a whenever-I-feel-like-it schedule, so don't expect stuff from me anytime soon.

The screenshots are so funny!
It's too bad about the too-fast shifts thing, though.

I can't wait for whatever your next level is gonna be. :D

Also I think it's funny how StaticRomantic is bolded and underlined.  X)

Thank you "Pumpkinbot" and "Bored2death" for your praise. It did take a lot of work to make (probably a given, considering how many screens there were to make).

And the "cheating" thing in the editor I don't consider cheating either. I just did that one part because I was bored. Really, a lot of what I do is due to boredom.
The voices actually do represent what is being said. It's not that they were muffled, exactly, it's just that I can to some degree manipulate my voice to sound like that. Yeah all the voices are just me.
And Isnoct, I don't get your comment.

Actually, IIRC, the real reason he picked 42 was because he wanted the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything to be "the most normal number" he could think of. He also said that "it obviously had to be an even number." Of course, don't take this for 100% true (since I'm not positive), but I think that's how it happened.

I registered here just so I could comment on this. I take it the boss can only be beaten if you use an earlier version of KS? Either that, or the boss can only be beaten if you're a better player than I am.

Best KS level I've ever played so far, although I don't understand most of it. I suppose that was sort of the point. Great work nonetheless, KG.

This has the best finale and ending in any KS level, the best use of shifts ever, and some excellent use not only of music, but sound in general. I just got a really good feeling from it, the sort you get from an epic videogame which can stand on it's own as art.

Whoa. The music was awesome. The boot was awesome. The Juni was awesome. The EVERYTHING was awesome. I loved it. The text made you feel like you were in a world of sadness, and desolation. The story made me feel like I was something else, and everything was different from everything else. It felt like I was in complete insanity. I felt scared, yet stupefied. I was amazed. I've found two of the endings, and can't find the final boss. The two I've discovered are odd, but cool. I love this level. I need to get this song on MP3.

Nice use of the Chrono Cross theme. Really

I still wonder sometimes if maybe there's a better way to explore stuff like the meaning of life than with semi-random craziness, but until that is found, I guess this has got to be one of the pinnacles of such expression. At least, of that which is capable with video games.

In any case, none of those ideas at the core of this level were particularly new for me, but their execution was certainly wonderful. The entire first level (which I call "Stripeville") was appropriately mortifying and disorienting, as were the consecutive segments of the game. "Green Platformville" was even better. Seeking out and trying to find meanings as such was something I couldn't believe I hadn't seen before in some other game. That boss battle was terrific; hard and sometimes unfair, but terrific nonetheless, with a voluminous amount of creativity.

So then, KG, I salute you.

K, I donno if this is a spoiler or even how to use Spoiler tags, but I was wondering around the world folder for your sound effects and noticed a folder called "A secretary's Life"  If you pull "Secretary's Life" out of the level folder, it is, itself, a level.

9_9  Was that on purpose or was that a mistake?

I should probably download this level to see if it's still there.

I don't know if anyone could, but could someone condense the song from the first part of the level (PurpleVille... maybe?), because it rocks so hard, I have been whistling it for months. Could someone please do it?

"Condense"? Do you mean make smaller or convert to some other format? Either way, this is easily accomplished with the program called Audacity.

Whoops, IO forgot. Could someone condense or make it into an MP3 file? I simply must hear it again, as I can no longer play the level, because I can't download stuff on my new computer.

If you can't download stuff on your computer, how can you hope to download anything someone converts to an MP3?

Could this be called an absurdist game, you think?
Sure. I am rather absurdist myself.

i actually didn't think I would ever be able to decide which level would be my favorite of all time, until I played this one a couple of days ago. Best level ever. No doubt about it.

There are three things that make me sure of this: 1) I f*cking LOVE the music C)p It's weird in the best possible way :)   2) Translating. I don't know why, but translating the game as I went along was a very interesting experience indeed. It felt quite rewarding. And 3)

Brilliant level :)

This really isn't non sequitur or absurd or random or even funny. It's just brilliant.

Did I notice a Discordianism reference?

I was under the impression Discordianism is more light-hearted, and chaos is taken as meaning disorder rather than a primordial void as in, say, Greek or Chinese mythology. I mean I guess in this level, things are sort of light-hearted too, but the darkness and chaos stuff seems older than Discordianism to me.

Here is a version for KS Ex with bigger shift delays: https://www.dropbox.com/s/5c7nkeu8ddql01j/KG%20-%20Teenhmifnoeafgil.knytt.bin?dl=1
This should make the animation closer to intended speed. The change slows down animation only in KS Ex. I haven't tested the whole level after the change, only tested the animation.

Oh, hi. Things are still happening here.
I just played it, and it seems to be the same. I don't really know how this newfangled Knytt Stories is supposed to work, or even what it does, but yeah it doesn't seem different for Teenhmifnoeafgil. Then again, maybe I installed it wrong? All I did was extract it into the Knytt Stories folder. Don't concern yourself about it though.
Edit: Although, now you can play as a ball I guess. That's pretty weird.

Yes, perhaps the ShiftsDelay value I used is too small. In world.ini in [KS Ex] section try ShiftsDelay=8 instead.
This doesn't make the level behave exactly like in 1.0.4 though, because Juni moves during these delays.

I think it's cool that you can still almost-emulate the way the game used to be so slow. It lets you hear the sounds more completely than you normally would.

Oh sorry hi. I really don't understand how this new KS works exactly, so I don't know how to change the value and stuff.
But still, really, it doesn't need to be like the old version, I've since decided it's not necessary. Though I appreciate the effort.

Yes, I also thought that it was fine when sped-up, but slowed down it is still cooler.
I'll go with 6 then. I've noticed that this delay does break Gospel if you go away from shifts area too soon, but it continues when you return to the area, so shouldn't be a problem.

Iggyzor made a notepad document in which there are translations of almost all of the text:

http://www.mediafire.com/?mqzmk4gniiz

Some bits he kind of messed up on (either by making typographical errors or reading wrong) and some bits I messed up on because I don't know why.

"Invalid or Deleted File.
The key you provided for file access was invalid. This is usually caused because the file is no longer stored on MediaFire. This occurs when the file is removed by the originating user or MediaFire.

Still have questions, or think we've made a mistake? Please contact support for further assistance."

Could the translation be re-uploaded? It seems to be an outdated link.

Just wanted to post to say what a touching and beautiful game this is. Thank you for making it. At first it was very disorienting, like being lost in a strange land - I felt very apprehensive, but open and curious, exploring it. I found several endings, and these endings, along with some of the translated dialog, started to show me something deeper here. I played through the game again just to get to the main ending (before knowing a main one existed). When I finally got to the ending, what a profound and touching way to end it, that's all I can say. The message you had in the credits, also, brought tears to my eyes - it was such a touching sentiment. This game defies expectations, at least, it did for me. This game is something special, I think, and I'm glad I got to play it. Thank you again.

I tried playing it with the old KS, and it was incompatible. Also, it uses flags, which, 1.04 did not support.

I've got the same problem. I downloaded version 1.0.4 of Knytt Stories from Nifflas' site, and it claims that this level requires a more recent version. In order to make sure something isn't wrong with the version hosted on Mediafire, I redownloaded it from knyttlevels.com, and even from that old level dump torrent, but got the same error each time.

So either something is wrong with my computer or version 1.0.4 isn't compatible with this level. Is anyone else able to play a copy of this level downloaded from one of the three abovementioned sources with the version of KS available at http://nifflas.ni2.se/content/Knytt%20Stories/Knytt%20Stories%20104.exe (http://nifflas.ni2.se/content/Knytt%20Stories/Knytt%20Stories%20104.exe)?

It works fine with version 1.2.1, mind you, but I'd rather play the level the way it was intended.

This level was designed for a version of KS that fell between the 2 versions available on Nifflas' home site. The newest version of KS is 100% backwards compatible with this level as far as I know.

You can look at the Teenhmifnoeafgil's World.ini. Near the top is a line, "Format=1" This indicates the minimum version of KS you need. KS 1.0.4 is only compatible with Format 0 levels.

Oh right, the shifts go faster now. I dug up KS 1.1.0 (http://egomassive.com/nifflas/KS110.zip) (3.4 MB) for you. This is just the executable in a zip file. I'd name it "Knytt Stories 110.exe" and place it in my existing Knytt Stories directory. It needs access to the other files.

PS. Your browser will probably complain about the safety of the file, because I'm just some obscure person with his own website.

I just beat this remarkable level for the first time. Many years ago I played it, didn't translate any of the text, died to the boss, and lost interest. I gotta say... the ending is what makes it all come together.

I did diligently translate all of the speech this time. I now actually wish I had beaten it WITHOUT translating all of the text. I can now appreciate why the author chose to encrypt it.

Spoiler: More thoughts (click to show/hide)

Also, the earlier translation link was broken, so I will offer a transcript of all translations for those who haven't seen it yet, and are too lazy to do so themselves. I will again remind you that I actually think the level is better without the translations.

I'm afraid I have no idea what "mirror Juni" was saying at the end.
