Title: Official Beta Testing Recruitment Thread
Post by: Fubaka on March 02, 2014, 12:21:55
Gleetings Nifflasites, Knyttists, and/or other silly names that you could hang on your door!

I'd like to set this thread up as a place where people can officially request to have a level of theirs beta-tested.  Here's how it'll go.

A user makes a post with the following information in bold or otherwise highlighted:

Here is an example of what a user posting a request should roughly look like:

Quote
The Adventures of Anti-Juni (Working Title)

[Challenge/Scenic/Very Hard]
Large (Medium as of now)
Level is about 64% done
Looking for at least 3 testers
Uses Ego's KS +

I am looking to break typical Knytt conventions with this level, and make it unlike anything players have seen up to now.  I'd mainly like for my beta testers to play through it and then offer me their thoughts about how I could make it more unique and befitting my goals (which will be elaborated on in private), as well as spotting wallswims/voids as per usual.  Lemme know if you are interested and I will send you more info as well as a link to the level.

Once a posting has been made, users who want to beta test should follow the instructions given by the poster, which may involve making a post of their own to announce their interest in testing, or to send a PM to the original poster if that's what they want done.  Additionally, someone posting their beta test request can post a link to their level directly for a more public test, so long as they remember not to directly attach the level to the forum!

Remember that if you are beta-testing a level, you should ALWAYS respect the wishes of the person who is making the level, and don't post anything about it here that they don't want you to.

One last note.  Once a user requesting beta testers has finished testing, or acquired the testers they want, they should modify their post to let people know that more testers are no longer needed.  This can be done by simply placing a notice at the beginning, and/or placing the original post in a spoiler box.

That is all.  Here's to more well-polished KS levels!

Also, if it wasn't obvious from the making of this thread, I am currently working on a new KS level again, and will request beta testers when the time comes.

It's good to be back.  :)

Great idea. In addition to mentioned fields I'd propose the link to level thread, if it exists.

I have an idea for level which builds on the woods environment I made which is in released levels board. I have not started anything but idea is done so I came here to see if this thread will work or not and its good way to get forcestart projects haha :)
It is also like no other ks level and maybe like no game idk but excited to try it.

no name yet

[Challenge/Scenic/Horror/Easy]
Medium (I think 40-50 screens will suffice for this)
Level is not even started but I will like copypaste woods level because these screens take time to make haha.
Looking for any amount of testers, no chumps who don't leave feedback.

So, there's nothing to test but the idea? Well then, I volunteer to test nothing but the idea.
...
It's a smashing good idea! I like Horror games, and I enjoyed the look and feel of Woods by Andy A.K.A. Elder A.K.A. Slmoneous.

Edit: Already got the two volunteers I asked for. Thanks guys! :)

This is not exactly a request for beta testers, but I figured it would be a much better idea to make use of this thread than starting a new one just for this.

I'm currently working on a KS level and I got to a point where I could definitely use some external input to help me see if I'm going in the right direction. I first thought about making a public preview thread, but since this level is quite gimmicky and experimental, I feel the "surprise" factor would be lost if I reveal too much beforehand. I'd rather keep everything a secret until the release, if possible :P

Would anyone be interested in trying a preview build of this level and giving me their general thoughts on it? It's a pretty short level (at least in its current incomplete state), so it shouldn't take much longer than 5 minutes to reach the end. Post here or PM me if you're willing to give it a shot. There's not much I can give in exchange, but I promise you a :hiddenstar: and a mention in the level credits.

[Misc/Challenge] [Easy]
[Small] (for now, but it'll probably stay that way)
Level is about 70% done
Looking for 1 or 2 testers

Thanks! :D I'll try to get the preview version ready today (just some cleaning up to remove temporary files and such). I'll then get back to you by PM with the download link and further explanations.

Ok, seems I already got the 2 volunteers I asked for, so I'll edit my original post.

Okay, you know what? I think this is the PERFECT place to have people try out my unfinished level, cause I'm not sure if I should even finish it and I would love to have player input on it.

Runaround (title is not set in stone)

[Challenge/Misc/Medium]
Small
Level is about 60-70% done (maybe; rough estimate)
Looking for anyone who's willing to test and bring me feedback!
Works in vanilla KS, but wouldn't be against converting to KS+ if need be

This was originally going to be my entry for August's Knytt of the Month Klub over at GT, but since I'm such a lazy asshole who can barely finish what he starts, I've been sitting on it for the past two weeks. Whenever I go back to it, there's just something telling me that I shouldn't finish it. But I'm going to CHANGE that, because I actually DO want to get this level done. It's a short, humorous level, that takes inspiration from Don't Eat the Mushroom and the last part of My Super Secret Basement (even though I didn't know I copied those things at the time). :P

Curse of the Catacombs (working title)

[Environmental/Challenge] [Easy]
[Small]
Level is practically finished
(only lacking intro/ending cutscenes and a few extras)
Looking for 1-2 testers
KS+ not required, but recommended

Edit:

Level is already done and posted here (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=6644).

What started as a side project to experiment with an incomplete tileset has progressed much faster than I expected. It is now almost complete, so I'm currently looking for 1 or 2 betatesters willing to help me polish this before the release. If you're interested, feel free to PM me or post here to let me know.

This is mostly an environmental level with a side of exploration-based challenge (just power-up collecting and some platforming, no enemies/traps) and a dark/creepy theme. It also features a simple story with two different endings, although only one of them will reveal the details.

Attention potential beta testers. Now is your chance to be immortalized in the credits of an egomassive KS+ level! :whoa: It is a small environmental level originally intended to showcase my previously unreleased swamp version of Fredrik Andersson's Thin Forest tileset. However, I went overboard an made something I'm extremely proud of. There is no preview thread for the level since I put it together in about 2 weeks. Don't worry about spoiling the level for yourself. The version you'll be playing will be the complete level.

Through the Swamp
[Environmental/Easy/Small] [KS+ only]
Looking for no more than 4 testers.

Next Gen Knytt - Environmental DLC Pack

[Environmental] [Easy]
[Small]
Level is practically finished
(only missing 4 bonus screens and some minor details)
Looking for just 1 tester.
Needs to be tested with both KS+ and regular KS.

The bonus pack for Next Gen Knytt (https://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=6826.0) is almost ready, but I'd like to have someone give it a test run (preferably both on vanilla KS and KS+) before the release, to ensure that there are no serious issues. Some general feedback would also be appreciated. If you're willing to help me with that, please reply to this post here.

Already got a volunteer :D  Betatesting will begin soon.

Shalev

[Challenge/Normal]
Medium
Level is at least 90% done (as I see it now, this obviously could all change)
Looking for 1 or 2 testers

Shalev is a themed world divided into six related parts. The level has an explorative element to it, but the main goal is to discover a secret metaphysical snowflake. It takes place at night, and there are a lot of waterfalls. I’m mostly looking for help catching wallswims and the like, but other advice is welcome too.

Edit: three lovely people have volunteered to test my level.  <3

DLFoDT (placeholder title)
[Misc/Easy]
Small
90% Completed, no sound yet
Want at least 2 testers
Uses KS+

There are a lot of shifts in this level, with the primary element being its story. Definitely looking for bad shifts, sequence breaking, wallswims, and SGEs, as well as an emphasis on feedback of the story. Does it make sense? Is it confusing? Which parts? Maybe ways to make it sound more natural, etc.

PM me!

Thanks to all people to volunteered to test for me!

The CGA Temple (working title)

[Playground/Challenge] [Normal]
[Small]
Level is finished (only missing the title screen and a couple other minor details)
Looking for 1 tester
Requires KS+

Edit: Already got a volunteer for this one. Thanks!

This is a small, VERY retro-styled exploration level with some light jumping challenges and puzzles. It uses KS+'s map and collectibles (finding all the artifacts will unlock an extra area). I'm looking for someone willing to play through the entire level once and give me some general feedback before I release it.

PLEASE NOTE: The level was made to resemble a very old PC DOS game, complete with 4-color graphics and (fake) beeper SFX and music, so the aesthetics here may not be your cup of tea (and I wouldn't blame you!).

Title: Re: Official Beta Testing Recruitment Thread

Hey Vegetal Gibber, given that the CGA games are from my childhood, I'd love to test your level. I can probably provide suggestions on how to improve given that I have plenty of experience with CGA and games from that era. I guess the aesthetics would therefor actually be my cup of tea. :)

Gentlemen, a boon! (Also ladies. Ladies, a boon! Also!)

I have spent precisely some hours over the last couple of weeks adding a new feature to 'Dragon Myth'. In doing so, I have meddled with a lot of shifts, warps, flags and COs and before I release the new version I want to make sure I haven't broken everything anything everything.

I wonder if anyone would be willing to play through the level for me to check because I have played it waaaaaay too much in adding this feature. Ideally I would like you to play through it twice (more details will be given on this to anyone who volunteers) though if that hurts too much, once will be a big help, too.

Also, doing this for me will require you to collect the five hidden golden creatures and complete the Bonus Area unlocked by collecting the aforementioned golden creatures. This is because the New Feature is found by completing the bonus area. I will tell any volunteers how to find them, so you must either not mind having this spoiled, or have found them already by virtue of your incredible genius and also attractiveness.

Thank you in advance!

Iuno (now surpassed 3 testers - feel free to volunteer, but I'll probably have enough consensus on how the level is going by then)
[Challenge/Medium/Very Hard (think Dark Sea but a bit easier? Not much difficulty curve at the moment)]
Mostly need design feedback before I go any further. Looking for at least 3 testers, although that might be half of the active community at the moment. :P
Should work in vanilla KS.

PM me if you're on board.

The Hidden Forest

[Challenge / Environmental] [Hard]
[Large]
Level is 100% finished
Looking for really anyone who wants to test it!

This is my first custom Knytt Level. As Juni, you explore a bunch of different environments. It's a simple "new region = new power-up" model, that requires a decent amount of back-tracking to places you couldn't access before. I'd love any thoughts people might have on the difficulty, story, et cetera.
One thing I'll note: There are two rooms in particular with a bunch of hidden spikes. Don't get discouraged! It might be super annoying, but I swear it gets better. I feel like a spike room is sort of obligatory...

http://knyttlevels.com/levels/Walc-TheHiddenForest.knytt.bin

Oh, and I saw that some dude decided to do a playthrough of the level on YouTube, so if you get stuck, check that out. (He actually solves the spike room a different way than I did...)

Thank you!

Forgotten Realms

[Challenge/Playground/Normal]
Large (~350 screens in current build)
Level is about 85% done
Works in Vanilla KS (playing in KS+ enables extra graphical features)
Looking for 1 tester

Forgotten Realms (https://nifflas.lp1.nl/index.php?topic=6978.msg74195) (click title to go to the preview thread) is a rather big exploration-based level with a bit of everything (some areas are purely environmental, whereas others are more challenge-based or contain some puzzles/mazes). I'm looking for one person willing to play through the current alpha version and then providing me with as much feedback as possible, as well as report any functional problems they might encounter. If you want to take on a more active role, suggestions about challenges, enemy placement and even themes for the upcoming bonus areas are also very welcome!

Reply here or PM me if you're interested.

I need testers for the level I made for the 2020 un-epic level contest. It is a short, hard, challenge level. I'm mainly looking for feedback on the difficulty level and the visibility. As per the contest guidelines the night is involved, and though I tried to make sure things don't get too dark they might. I must release the level by the end of the month, so make sure you have the time to play it and give feedback before volunteering.

Challenge/Scenic/Maze
Hard
Medium (size)
Level is about 90% done.
Uses KS+.
Looking for 2 or 3 testers. This is a rather high-concept level with a "broken bridge"-esque mechanic where you can only use a certain pathway a limited amount of times. That means it's possible to get stuck. I want to make sure it's not too difficult to figure out what to do.

Challenge
Medium/Hard

Currently about 10% done.
A semi-open world level that has a gimmick in each area and a small collection of incidental characters.
Looking for 2-3 testers who will be available once for a quick test within a week, and then a longer test within about a month. Looking for feedback on the introduction and general feel.

This level is almost finished. It's much bigger than I originally planned it and somehow feels like three levels stitched together. There are some screenshod posted here on the forum and on Niffcord (like the one with palms). I need 1-3 testers willing to answer a few questions about the general feel and flow of the level.

Petrichor

Challenge, intended to be Hard
Roughly halfway done
Looking for up to 3 testers, hoping to get at least one who has managed to beat a Very Hard or Lunatic level before, and one who hasn't

This is mainly gonna be about the challenges. I got a little creative with some of them, and i'm worried the level might end up completely unfair, more difficult than i meant for it to be, or both. Hopefully some of you could help me make sure they aren't.

I haven't really thought about that part. I guess just whatever time works for you is probably fine.

[KS+][Large][Adventure][Hard/Very Hard]
Level: The Tree of Life (https://nifflas.lp1.nl/index.php?topic=7245.0)

Hard to say how much the level is finished. I estimate around 80% complete. It's at a good place for beta-ing. I'll explain a bit of what's missing in the PM to any testers.

Looking for any number of testers.

I will test. It's been a while since I've been involved in such things.
