Title: Two Questions, Colour and Music
Post by: Caveflower on January 13, 2014, 04:04:29
Can they be changed within a level, or are level creators stuck with only using one set of colour for "Juni"?  The skin colour and clothes colour.

Example: If someone wanted Juni to be able to transform into a ghost and back to normal, could they have Juni change colours within a level?

EDIT: Another question. Does the game have problems with longer ambience/music being used, besides simply having a larger level size? If so, what is the limit?

Juni can have only one color per level. If this bugs you too much for some reason, I think there are mods that let you change Juni's color over the course of the level.
(Can't really answer your second question. If it helps, I've never heard of it being a problem.)

Thanks. It kinda bothers me that while there can be a huge amount of variation between levels because of shifts, custom tilesets, and custom ambience/music, the player character looks mostly the same throughout all the levels (This may be intended by Nifflas.). I guess I should just find one skin colour and one clothes colour set that works for a whole level, and if a change in appearence is needed badly enough, use a mod or have the level be in two parts.

You can only have one custom colour set for Juni with original KS*. KS+ and KSEx both support entirely custom characters which can be changed during the level. Even better, both mods use the same sprite sheets**, so your choice of mod isn't restricted by choice of custom character. There's a collection of existing custom characters here (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=5635.0).

There aren't restrictions to the size of music/ambiance files you use. However, when the track loads the game stutters. I'm not sure if there's a connection between the length of the pause and the length of the track. On fast machines it's barely noticeable anyway.

*The software KS is made with was designed so these kind of graphics are embedded. It's quite difficult to load external graphics onto moving objects. Even changing the colour of a graphic is tricky because you have to tell it exactly which colour it's replacing. Allowing the level designer to declare what colour to replace could result in glitchy behavior.

**You have to convert them for KSEx, but there's a tool for that.
