Title: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Kasran on January 04, 2014, 21:13:39
I started a forum game called Odd One Out way back in 2009, and it seemed to be mildly successful in its time. I figured I'd try it again!

The rules, shortened quote from the original topic's post:
I post a list of three or more items.
Then the next three people to post pick an item and give a short explanation of why they think that item is unique from the others.
(Note that two or more people can pick the same item, as long as they give different explanations.)
I then pick the person whose explanation I like the best, and that person posts a list. Repeat.

So, as I also said in that post, it's kind of like Apples to Apples: you appeal to the judge if possible.

I'll start:
Earth, Wind, Fire, Water

Post by: LPChip on January 05, 2014, 13:30:22
Wind. Its the only force that is there, but isn't there. Wind is air moving, and without moving air there is no wind. You cannot see wind, but you know it is there.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Firecat on January 05, 2014, 19:21:10
Earth, because it is also the name of a Planet on the Solar system.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on January 06, 2014, 17:46:03
Fire. It's the only one that hurts you every time you touch it.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Kasran on January 06, 2014, 21:53:22
Heyo! I got three replies. I was honestly a little worried.

I like Polana's answer the best! So Polana wins. Your turn~

No one made an Earth, Wind & Fire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth,_Wind_%26_Fire) reference? Dang, that seemed right up this forum's alley. Oh well.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on January 07, 2014, 00:22:28
My turn ?
Well...
Train, tram, bus, trolley bus.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Healy on January 07, 2014, 01:16:41
Train, because it's not related to a bus.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 07, 2014, 11:25:59
Train, because I like riding on trains! (even though the ticket prices just went up.  <_<)
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: LPChip on January 07, 2014, 13:00:57
Train because its usually ment to transfer long distances, where a tram, bus and trolley bus usually are short distances.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: sergiocornaga on January 07, 2014, 14:51:49
Bus because it doesn't begin with a T...?
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on January 07, 2014, 21:34:32
Train because it's the only one what can transport load such as coil, etc.?
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on January 08, 2014, 12:10:00
Okay, it's Sergio.
I had another explanation of why is it bus. This one is so simple I even did not think about it, but I like it most of them.

Train, because I like riding on trains! (even though the ticket prices just went up.  <_<)
Me too.  :)
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: sergiocornaga on January 08, 2014, 12:51:24
Owl, moth, snake, wolf.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: LPChip on January 08, 2014, 14:24:52
Snake, because it has no legs.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on January 08, 2014, 14:45:49
Wolf, only hairy one.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: GrayFace on January 08, 2014, 15:46:52
Moth, because I didn't know the meaning of that word.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 08, 2014, 18:27:14
Snake, because according to the Genesis account of Eden, it is the only one that caused the untimely downfall of mankind.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on January 08, 2014, 19:09:42
Snake, because the others are more active in the night? (snake is more active during the day)
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Kasran on January 08, 2014, 20:32:10
(I'd like to interject briefly and point out that the original rules said "the next three people", but it seems to be working without that, so I'll change it.)
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: sergiocornaga on January 09, 2014, 06:34:19
Snake, because it has no legs.

I like this one. Snake also happens to be an odd one out I had in mind as it is the only one not mentioned as being one of the "meaner things" Dracula is capable of controlling in the novel of the same name.

You're up, LPChip!
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: LPChip on January 09, 2014, 11:43:12
Cool. I didn't think I'd win this one. Lets see....

Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall.

Yes, I can think of a few different ones myself, so it is possible.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on January 09, 2014, 17:09:33
Spring. It's the new beginning for everything in nature. Others are mostly ends.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on January 09, 2014, 17:25:46
Summer, because nights are short and days are the longest of the year in that season.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 09, 2014, 20:40:59
Winter, because in the Arctic the sun never rises - a long, endless night with the srars shining down... and the distant, far off promis that, one day, the sun will rise again.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Healy on January 09, 2014, 21:00:56
Fall, because it has the nicest color palette.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: StraightFlame on January 10, 2014, 10:45:27
Fall, because it's also a verb. And spring as well, because that's a noun.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: sergiocornaga on January 10, 2014, 10:48:02
Fall, because it's also a verb. And spring as well, because that's a noun.

Fall is a noun, too! And spring is a verb, too!
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: StraightFlame on January 10, 2014, 12:49:26
English is an awesome language.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: LPChip on January 10, 2014, 12:58:31
I'm going with Polana's answer. I like it the most. I was expecting some temperature ones too, but maybe thats too obvious.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on January 10, 2014, 15:33:45
Me ? Again ? Wow !
OK, here you are:
Forget-me-not (Myosotis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myosotis_sylvatica)), sunflower (Helianthus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helianthus)), Lilium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilium) and Caltha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caltha_palustris).

Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: LPChip on January 10, 2014, 16:57:16
I'm going with Caltha because those are many flowers on a branch, where the rest is a few to a single one.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: StraightFlame on January 10, 2014, 17:03:54
Myosotis, because its Wikipedia article has a "notable gardens" section. And this time i didn't roll a 1 on my fact check.

Edit: Also, i think you might be addicted to botany.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on January 10, 2014, 18:29:37
Sunflower, because its buds rotate to the east at sunrise and gradually travel across the sky to the west. And at night they are coming back to the east position. And from sunflowers is produced sunflower oil.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 10, 2014, 19:05:33
Sunflower, mostly for the quote about them in the movie, 'Calendar Girls'.

"I don't think there's anything on this planet that more trumpets life than the sunflower. For me that's because of the reason behind its name. Not because it looks like the sun but because it follows the sun. During the course of the day, the head tracks the journey of the sun across the sky. A satellite dish for sunshine. Wherever light is, no matter how weak, these flowers will find it. And that's such an admirable thing. And such a lesson in life."

Fairly sure none of the others were mentioned in that film. :P
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on January 10, 2014, 22:27:22
Talps wins. I haven't seen that movie but it sounds interesting.
Edit: Also, i think you might be addicted to botany.
I study it, so I might be, a little.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 11, 2014, 11:04:47
:D

Ok, four things... Odd one out...

Ok, which is the odd one out of... a fox, a boomerang, the planet Neptune, or men who wear ties?
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: StraightFlame on January 11, 2014, 11:17:52
Men who wear ties, because they are the least likely to be plumbers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plumbers_Don't_Wear_Ties) despite being the only thing that's human.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: LPChip on January 11, 2014, 11:58:26
Planet Neptune because it is not something that is on earth.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on January 11, 2014, 12:46:52
Boomerang. Only thing of these you can throw away and it will return.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on January 11, 2014, 20:08:00
Men who wear ties...because if you kill a person, you'll go to jail. :D (you know, for destroying things and objects you can't be judged and animals...it's different)
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 11, 2014, 20:18:55
Polana did it again, by inspiring what's attached below, even if the answer wasn't necessarily true.

I also would have accepted 'Neptune, because it's the only one that's the eighth planet from the sun'.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on January 11, 2014, 20:37:43
Oh. I should stop playing this game until everyone hates me.
Coconut, hazelnut, walnut, peanut.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Gorfinhofin on January 11, 2014, 21:00:47
Hazelnut, because it is the only true nut.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Healy on January 11, 2014, 22:23:28
Coconut, because they have water in them.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 11, 2014, 23:00:36
Coconut, because when you break any of the others in half and tap them together, it doesn't sound like a horse clapping.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Caveflower on January 11, 2014, 23:13:19
Peanut, because it is more likely to hurt someone (allergies).
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on January 11, 2014, 23:21:17
Gornfilholm wins. You must be reading my thoughts. Or you are interested in botany too.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Gorfinhofin on January 11, 2014, 23:54:57
Yeah, I've taken a few plant related classes. Fruit terminology is one of my favorite parts. It's fun to be like "Hey did you know that this fruit that you thought was this kind of fruit is ACTUALLY THIS OTHER KIND?"

Pizza, Cheeseburger, Taco, Salad
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: LPChip on January 11, 2014, 23:58:50
I actually have 2 different choices and I'm not sure if thats allowed, so I'm going to post just one.

Pizza, because thats my favorite meal of the 4.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 12, 2014, 02:09:38
Salad, cus I didn't have any of the others for lunch.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Caveflower on January 12, 2014, 04:24:28
Salad, because it has the fewest calories, and is considered junk food much less often than the others.

EDIT: Also it contains no meat, but sometimes pizza doesn't either.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: sergiocornaga on January 12, 2014, 06:08:04
Cheeseburger, because it's three syllables and not two.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on January 12, 2014, 17:26:23
Pizza, it's the biggest one. :D (and also you can see all ingredients of it because it's round)
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Gorfinhofin on January 12, 2014, 20:34:50
I'm going to go with CWolvie's.
The answer I had in mind was that pizza doesn't usually have lettuce.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on January 13, 2014, 00:40:23
Me?...Cool. X)

Here we go: Mobile phone, PC, TV, iPod.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on January 13, 2014, 00:55:26
iPhone. Only one of these I don't have.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Healy on January 13, 2014, 05:19:58
TV, because you can't run programs on it.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: LPChip on January 13, 2014, 11:41:50
Actually Healy, the newer smart tv's do allow you that.

TV because its the only one that doesn't have a variant with touch screen. (a monitor that can be used as a tv by adding a pc is obviously not a tv)
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 13, 2014, 13:04:02
TV is the only one invented before the second world war.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on January 13, 2014, 18:22:40
I like Talps's opinion.

Personally, I thought of PC, because you can do many useful things on it and it's comfortable. But never mind.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 13, 2014, 22:54:44
Yay!

Somebody, nobody, anybody or everybody?
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: LPChip on January 13, 2014, 22:58:24
I think nobody is the odd one here, because its so negative, while the rest is at least somewhat positive.

For example put the word in the following sentence to get what I mean:

.... would like that.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on January 13, 2014, 23:30:40
Everybody. It refers to all of us. Other ones split people into categories.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on January 14, 2014, 18:26:39
Anybody, because using the term any- is possible in negative sentence too.

Example: I don't have anything.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 14, 2014, 20:22:46
'I don't like everybody' is a negative sentence. and 'nobody' covers everyone as well. So LPChip, because his answer is vague enough to not be obviously flawed.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: LPChip on January 14, 2014, 21:26:10
Yay, I guess.. :)

Lets use this forum as a theme for the next odd one out.

Hidden star, Arcade, Avatar or Spoilered text
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Healy on January 14, 2014, 21:54:27
Arcade, because it's the only feature I haven't used?
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 15, 2014, 00:22:05
Avatar, as it is more an expression of each poster's identity than the others are.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on January 16, 2014, 17:32:44
Avatar, because it's the name of movie too.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on January 16, 2014, 17:39:24
Spoilered text, it's the part of our posts, not of this page itself.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: LPChip on January 16, 2014, 18:44:23
I like Talps' one most.

his suggestion could've been beaten by the following: Arcade, as the other three are often seen at the same time where applicable.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 16, 2014, 19:05:37
Oh my, um...

Saturn, Uranus, a monkey, or Neptune.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Healy on January 17, 2014, 01:35:23
Monkey, because it's not a planet.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on January 17, 2014, 18:35:16
Neptune, because it has seven letters instead of six letters.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on January 18, 2014, 22:50:52
Uranus. It's only one beginning with vowel. And only one with nearly horizontal axis of rotation.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 19, 2014, 01:19:49
I'm trying to position a monkey's axis of rotation. :P

But I will go with CWolvie because I didn't spot that one.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on January 19, 2014, 19:06:46
*yahoo*

A rainy day, a snowy day, a sunny day, a foggy/windy day.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: LPChip on January 19, 2014, 19:58:00
I'm going with a sunny day because the other three (taken a foggy day) all have a form of water in them. Rainy day is a lot of water. A snowy day is water around freezing point and a foggy way is vaporised water (tiny drops close together)
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Healy on January 20, 2014, 01:02:07
A snowy day, because it generally only occurs during a particular time in the year.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 20, 2014, 14:11:07
A foggy/windy day is the odd one out, as it incurs two types of weather, whereas the others each feature only one.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on January 20, 2014, 18:56:41
I think LPChip is the lucky one.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: LPChip on January 20, 2014, 20:01:58
Yay.

Lets do Car brands.

Dodge, Audi, Volkswagen, Seat.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on January 20, 2014, 20:30:02
Dodge. It's only American one out of these.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: andrew18 on January 21, 2014, 16:59:30
Audi, because it's more solid brand.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on January 21, 2014, 17:51:48
Audi, because its emblem is four interlinked rings which symbolize the four different automobile manufacturers - Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: LPChip on January 22, 2014, 12:59:13
I like CWolvie's explaination most. I would've chosen andrew18 except that Seat is also a solid brand. I drive a seat myself with lots of joy. Dodge is also very good though even has those super cars, so Dodge is also pretty solid if you ask me.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux

 :)

The education system: Kindergarten, primary school, high school, college.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: LPChip on January 23, 2014, 23:09:06
I'm going for College, because its the only one that the least amount of people attend to, because those who attend college also has attended the other 3, but not visa versa.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Healy on January 27, 2014, 05:04:31
Kindergarten, because it's the easiest to get through.  X-P
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux

Kindergarten, for being named in ze German language! In zis vay, eet ees ze odd von out!

Talps won again. ;)
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 27, 2014, 19:03:17
Taking the Michael out of someone else's accent always wins!  :shifty:
(sorry).

Your options:

Nuclear war
Super-flu
Giant asteroid striking the Earth
Stepping on a bee
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: LPChip on January 27, 2014, 19:26:27
Stepping on a bee, because thats the only one that isn't a theme for a movie. :D
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on January 27, 2014, 20:23:37
Super-flu, because it's not fatally dangerous (you can't die).

(I mean, stepping on a bee is fatally dangerous only for someone who is allergic to sting, and other options are dangerous to everyone)
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on January 27, 2014, 23:26:11
Nuclear war, it's only one caused by mankind.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 29, 2014, 15:35:49
Polana wins; I liked that you spotted something obvious that I missed when coming up with that.
LPChip, almost got it for the creative reason, but he still picked the most obvious answer.
CWolvie, note 'deaths' column in the table. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza_pandemic#Influenza_pandemics)
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on January 29, 2014, 15:45:31
Okay.

Lion, tiger, jaguar and cougar.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: LPChip on January 29, 2014, 17:06:47
This one is hard. I can think of so many different reasons...

I'll go with Lion because its the only one of them that has a beard. :)
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 29, 2014, 23:27:19
While lions are considered vulnerable, tigers are the odd one out as they are the only ones actually endangered; there are estimated to be less than 3500 tigers remaining in the wild.

Threats to tigers include destruction of their habitat for timber and agriculture and fragmentation of their habitat by the building of roads, competition with humans where they are forced to live close together, and - above all else - poaching. Tiger parts are used in traditional medicines and make popular trophies.

(I did research to get that answer!)
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux

Eh...it's simple, but cougars, because they can either be light brown or black. :)

Talps wins.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on January 31, 2014, 21:33:06
Egomassive's 'Shipwrecked', KG's 'Teenhmifnoeafgil', Dessgeega's 'The Oubliette', or B-Man's 'The Great Race'.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on January 31, 2014, 22:55:33
I'll choose The Oubliette, because it's almost black and white and has only one ending.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on February 01, 2014, 18:31:53
B-Man's The Great Race, because of that brilliant computer speech - the longest and laborious part ever which took too many screens (I forgot how many).

(and it has one unfinished area in the museum, something with bees and honey as far as I can remember)
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on February 07, 2014, 09:48:18
Well, as no third answer seems forthcoming, it's gonna have to be Polana's again, as CWolvie answered 'I like this one best because...' - not 'this is the odd one out because...'
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Polana on February 07, 2014, 16:22:46
Heh...

Ice hockey, curling, figure skating, speed skating.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on February 07, 2014, 16:50:08
In all of them it is desirous to slide on the ice, except in curling where you want the stone to slide on the ice while you yourself remain stable.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on February 07, 2014, 18:43:59
Figure skating, the others are based on racing with goals, short/long tracks or something like that.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux

Ice hockey, because it's the only contact sport.

Haha, whoops! Looks like I forgot to check back in this thread.

Uh, let's see if I can start this thing up again:
Rose, dandelion, daffodil, tulip.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on September 13, 2014, 12:01:41
The rose, as any of the others would not smell as sweet if their names were changed (or so I'm told).

Dandelion because its the only one that uses wind to spread its seeds, which is something that most children find really fascinating. (the sight at least)

The dandelion, daffodil, and tulip are all flowers, while Rose (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_(Doctor_Who)) is an episode of Doctor Who.

Oh yes.

Church, castle, fortress, palace.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: LPChip on September 21, 2014, 19:08:59
Church as it is the only one that never had any kind of touchable(physical?) protection/defense capabilities.

Edit by LPChip: Added  the word physical to represent what I meant.

Post by: Talps on September 22, 2014, 00:49:33
Church has spiritual defence, LPChip!

A church is not a building generally intended for human habitation, unlike the others. It is also the only one with a solely religious purpose.

Palace, because churches, castles, and especially fortresses can be thought of as plain or even austere, but the word "palace" always implies a certain level of extravagance.

Talps, your turn.

:)
Hope people will forgive the big images, but it's time for a picture round!

touchable(physical?)
Oh man late response, but i think the word "tangible" would've been great for this.

The treefrog that has limbs, because it's the only one for which the "title" states that it belongs to someone. ("this guy's pet frog" rather than "animal-name the alliterative species")
okay so a rabb is not a person
this never happened okay
Edit: How about the bird-thing because the image doesn't show it to be in some form of captivity?

In the last picture are two beings, the frog and a human, maybe?

In the last picture are two beings, the frog and a human, maybe?

If you look closely at the first picture, it seems it may also contain two beings.

My pick is the treefrog, since the others are awfully… monochromatic.

Martha, because she's the only one out of the four to be bipedal.

I like StraightFlame's answer best.

While I don't feel this game should ever have a 'right' answer, I none-the-less had a theme in mind when picking these pictures. I would have given the prize to anyone pointed out that:

They are all members of extinct species except for the frog, who is the only member of his species still alive today.

Or

They are/were the last surviving members of their species except for the quagga, who was merely one of the last of hers.

Sorry for the delay; didn't expect to win.

Let's meta things up a bit for this round:

Talps, Healy, sergiocornaga, CWolvie
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Healy on October 01, 2014, 04:50:17
Hmm, I think I'm gonna go with CWolvie, because while Talps, sergiocornaga, and I have all released more than one Knytt Stories level, CWolvie has only released Save the High Jump (as far as I know, anyway).
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on October 01, 2014, 16:10:50
Well if we're going meta...

StraightFlame is the odd one out, as he was the only one who's name isn't on the list!
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on October 01, 2014, 18:43:21
OK, I think of sergiocornaga, because the others have their names with capital letter.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: sergiocornaga on October 01, 2014, 22:17:13
I pick myself for being the only one not to reply to StraightFlame's post!

Whoops. I pick CWolvie for registering an account here in 2012, while the rest were registered in 2010.

sergiocornaga wins.

Peking duck, pomegranate, pamplemousse, pancakes, popcorn, pumpernickel.

Peking Duck, because it's the only meat dish.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux

Pamplemousse is the only word that Google can't translate into Czech.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on October 07, 2014, 23:29:00
Pamplemousse is the only word that wouldn't be used in English (or failing that, England) because over here we call them grapefruits.

Maaan, now I want some grapefruit.

 ;)

Stomach, heart, kidneys, small/large intestine, liver, lungs.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on October 09, 2014, 19:02:29
The heart.

This poem by Simon Armitage sums it up well.

I've made out a will; I'm leaving myself
to the National Health. I'm sure they can use
the jellies and tubes and syrups and glues,
the web of nerves and veins, the loaf of brains,
and assortment of fillings and stitches and wounds,
blood - a gallon exactly of bilberry soup -
the chassis or cage or cathedral of bone;
but not the heart, they can leave that alone.

They can have the lot, the whole stock:
the loops and coils and sprockets and springs and rods,
the twines and cords and strands,
the face, the case, the cogs and the hands,

but not the pendulum, the ticker;
leave that where it stops or hangs.

The rest of the organs we visualise as little more than complex pieces of meat, the bits of the body that makes it all work. Think of the heart and your mind explodes; somehow, culturally, it has come to mean emotion, life, love, the soul. It's more than a part of the body, it's a part of the soul. It's everything that makes us human.

Speaking as the 16-year-old-me-studying-this-poem-for-my-GCSEs, what stands out about the poem is that he offers no explanation as to why the heart matters so much to him. And that, I think, is the point. Something about the way we perceive the heart cannot be put into words. But simply put, it matters.

The kidneys, because you can give one of them away and still live? Uh, gee, this is a hard one.

The kidneys, because you can give one of them away and still live? Uh, gee, this is a hard one.
Just saying; i was gonna do a similar one ("You only need one of each to live, except for the lungs, which you need two of"), but then i did some research and guess what (http://www.livescience.com/27896-pope-one-lung-organs-you-can-live-without.html).

My mum has only one lung...

Though she may be a zombie. i haven't tested in a while.

Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux

Sorry for the delay.

'A', 'E', 'I', or 'O'.

The full moon glyph, as it's the only one Terezi from Homestuck doesn't replace with a number.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux

'U', since it's the one vowel you didn't mention.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Healy on October 16, 2014, 14:44:31
"A", because it's the start of the alphabet.
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: CWolvie on October 16, 2014, 17:14:59
"O", because it's round (doesn't have any form of a straight line).
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on October 17, 2014, 09:56:39
Amm'a give it to CWolvie. (I nearly gave it to Sergio but I would have felt a bit mean to give the reward to the person who picked an answer that wasn't an option. That'd be like having the final question of 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' where the correct answer is 'None of the above'.)

(Also, four answers seems optimal to me. Sorry, U...)

(Now I feel bad for insulting U. I hope I didn't make it cry. :()

:))

Now let's go with: Ebola outbreak, Hong Kong protests, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, death of "Baby Doc" Duvalier
Title: Re: Odd One Out, redux
Post by: Talps on October 22, 2014, 13:56:35
The death of Duvalier is the only one with a death toll of '1' (though I confess I couldn't find out if anyone had died in or as a result of the Hong Kong protests, the toll at the end of the event is, I feel, liable to be either 0 or greater than 1).

ISIS, because as far as I know, it's the only recent event that forced a service to change its name from ISIS Mobile Wallet. (http://news.gosoftcard.com/2014/07/07/isis-wallet-rebranding/)

(Ebolaworld (http://youtube.com/ebolaworld), however, is still untouched. Thankfully.) Well, shit. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eD3llmQLkhg)

Well, this topic seems to be inactive for a long time, but I think it isn't so bad, huh? My latest selection was not so good, I'm sorry, so I'm in a mood right now to give Talps a chance to carry on, because he was first. Hope he don't mind it. :)
