Title: TheYeIIowDucK's KS Level Dump
Post by: Widget on August 29, 2013, 06:46:14
A couple of years ago, TheYeIIowDucK compiled a .torrent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torrent_file) of his sizeable KS Level collection and shared it here.(OT (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=5014.0)) There are a lot of interesting levels in the collection (including a couple dozen I thought were exceptionally good) and over fifty that are no longer available anywhere else.
Should you find this torrent useful (or interesting, or entertaining) please consider giving TheYeIIowDucK a (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/Smileys/Niffpack/hidden.gif). So as to simplify the process, clicking through this link (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?action=modifykarma;sa=applaud;uid=756;topic=5014.0;m=54392;sesc=d674318392ac00d6136bf19d2d8acbaf) will award him an exceptionally well deserved star for the original Levels' Dump thread (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=5014.msg54392#msg54392) and .torrent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torrent_file).

[06\09\13]: Since the index lists are now divided into relatively manageable chunks (as opposed to the old, 85-level 'Spoiler-monsters') I've started re-reading them and liberally adding notes to any entries where I think they might add some value, interest or utility. I'm particularly keen to add any comments by Authors about their own levels (e.g. Firecat's opinion (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=6070.msg64698#msg64698) on File corruption).
Though I made an attempt to write the note for File corruption myself, based on Firecat's comment, I'd be more than happy to paste in submitted notes verbatim. Any entries without a note from the author him- or herself (Including entries to which I've already added a note) are fair game for anyone's relevant note suggestions (It'd be great to dilute my own comments and opinions in order, one hopes, to make the notes more reflective of the community's collective opinions).

I'd thank you for this, but my chances are canned.
As far as I know, from torrents, I'm banned.
If someone could give me a link to a few
I'd love to see an old level or two,
My collection is oh so terribly bland.

File corruption by Firecat

Got to love how the only one of my levels present on this compilation is the one i regret doing the most.

[ITA84 - Pastime]
[Challenge] [Easy\Normal] [Small]
(DDL (http://knyttlevels.com/levels/Milosh-Speed%20Up-fixed.knytt.bin)) Speed up by MILOSH

If I remember correctly, Milosh's "Speed up" level had the wrong folder name, that's why it shows "Pastime" instead; it has nothing to do with "Pastime".

I'm having a problem that a user in the previous thread had: whenever I try to load one of these levels, I find myself falling through an infinite purple void. I'm guessing that Knytt Stories.exe is failing to load the data of the levels, but I'm at a loss as to fixing this. I installed them by dragging the contents of the "Epic Knytt Stories Level Dump" folder into "Worlds."

Any help would be appreciated!

Are the level folders you're testing 100% downloaded?

Everything in the torrent was downloaded 100%.

Playing knytt levels that were installed from .bin files still works fine, it's the contents of the torrent that don't work.

I've started working on a step-by-step guide to using and customising µTorrent (http://www.utorrent.com/) but, in the meantime, you could try downloading the latest version (µTorrent Stable (3.3.1 build 30017) on the µTorrent downloads page (http://www.utorrent.com/downloads/win)). The website also includes a number of FAQs.

If I remember correctly, Milosh's "Speed up" level had the wrong folder name, that's why it shows "Pastime" instead; it has nothing to do with "Pastime".

I'd personally love to be able to correct that but the only reason I've included the folder titles is so the levels can be identified without having to check the world.ini or load them in KS. There are a few entries, like Milosh's, that are mislabelled in that way, so I decided to use the [Level Folder's Title] to identify the entry and the LevelName (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?board=39.0) and Author to give the accurate information.

Got to love how the only one of my levels present on this compilation is the one i regret doing the most.

I can't really remove it unless the community as a whole goes for the idea of reworking the torrent. If you'd like, though, I can certainly change the note to explain that it's a level you don't consider to be good enough to represent your work (or to say just about anything you'd like it to).

I'm having a problem that a user in the previous thread had: whenever I try to load one of these levels, I find myself falling through an infinite purple void. Could you possibly give a list of the levels you've had problems with? Some of the levels in this torrent are incomplete to the point that they won't run at all, and some will load but then prove impossible to play due to varying degrees of errors/bugs.
In the meantime, if it's a level that has a (DDL (http://www.knyttlevels.com)) by it's entry, or a thread (i.e. the level's title is a link you can click on), you could download the .knytt.bin for that level to check whether it's the level itself or just the version in the torrent.

Oh, I didn't really want you to fix it or anything, I just pointed it out. The problem stood out for me because in your list the levels are sorted by level folder name, so "Speed up" appears in the I group instead of M. I know there are quite a few levels with similar problems, and the correct level name may be either one, so there's no general rule to apply (knyttlevels.com uses the .ini name, I figure because that's where the version number is usually included for modified levels).

Great job, by the way! C)

I'd organised the list in this fashion to make it as easy as possible to use as an index for TheYeIIowDucK's torrent; I didn't stop to think about how useful it would be for any other purpose (e.g. to check for a specific level, or compare to another collection). I could add a comment to that level (and other's like it) if it would help make clear what the folder "should" have been called. In fact, if anyone thinks the index could be improved in any way, I'd love to get some more points of view on other aspects aswell.
[Edit]: Come to think of it, I could try to come up with a format for a "dummy" entry, so that the folders mismatched with their levels would appear under both letters (although not counted for the subtotal and possibly just pointing to the main entry).

Great job, by the way! C)
Thankyou very much. I just hope I'm not stepping on too many toes with this; it feels a little like swooping in to steal credit for the work of TheYeIIowDucK and the levels' authors

Can anybody who still has these seed the torrent? Or, alternately -- since I only need about half the levels in YeLLowDuck's original torrent -- offer some other way to get the levels that were in the torrent but still aren't up at KnyttLevels?

It's not a question of not knowing how to use a torrent, it's a question of not being able to use a torrent for information security reasons; security options are not always fully controlled by the end users. Unless someone makes these available in a way that does not involve, in any way, using peer-to-peer file sharing, I (and others) won't be able to gain access to these levels.

Could someone upload them to a hosting site (preferrably knyttlevels.com), please?

I have good news and bad news, and maybe-good news.

The good news is that someone did indeed seed the torrent, and I was able to download all the level folders I'd selected.

The bad news is that many of the levels have something wrong with them that renders them unplayable; specifically, their level maps are empty, though the cutscenes, tilesets, audio files etc. are intact in their folders. It's quite disconcerting to see a well-done info screen, an intriguing set of intro-cutscene images, and then Juni falling endlessly through the void...

The maybe-good news is that I have no qualms about uploading the levels not already on knyttlevels.com to knyttlevels.com... IF LPChip (who maintains the level archive) has no objections. I'd also be willing to upload them elsewhere if LPChip says no and someone else has server space to offer.

I have no objection, but I'm not the one who hosts the level archive, but Jace is.

Its point is to host Knytt Stories levels. I can't see a problem with uploading Knytt Stories levels on to it.

If ther's anyone who'd oppose to it would possibly be whoever made the levels, if they don't want 'em on the page for a reason or another.

But as for me, I don't have a problem with it.

(Sorry for the mix-up, Jace & LPChip! I guess I drew the wrong inference from the fact that LPChip hosts the forums and is the one working on the overhaul of the knyttlevels interface.)

Well, it sounds like it's open season. Anybody who has (working, ideally) copies of levels that are not yet up on the archive can upload at will. Whee!

Personally, I'm particularly hoping for copies of googoogjoob's levels, some of which I've never had the chance to play.

Double-posting for the bump.

It looks like the specific problem with the levels that came out of the torrent unplayable is that their Map.bin files are corrupted. The filesizes are correct; nothing else in the folder seems to be missing or damaged; and replacing a "bad" Map.bin with a "good" copy (from knyttlevels or wherever) renders the level playable again without anything else needing to be changed.

Has anyone else encountered this issue, either with the TYIID torrent or with other download sources? If there's reason to think the Map.bin files were somehow damaged during the process of my downloading them, I'll just re-download. If the torrent's copies themselves are bad, though...

(BTW, thanks to whoever anonymously seeded the torrent for me the other day. Hopefully that wasn't itself the source of the file corruptions.)

Okay so, in the interests of being helpful, I compiled a list of levels I couldn't find on the archive, so that we could beg people to reupload them. Should we make a new thread, or something? Even as just a general, "This level is missing, can we have it back?" for any Knytt Stories level?

List:
Spoiler: (click to show/hide)

Some of the games I did find weren't under the correct author, which in turn means that some of the games I didn't find might not be under the correct name. Or misfiled entirely. So if that's the case, it would be awesome to know so I can add that one in. Still though, it's nice that only some 61 games are missing.

I have corrected it. I'm still looking for input as to whether or not we should have a thread requesting the rest of the uploads to the rest of the subforum -- after all, plenty of people with these levels may not ever read this particular one.

You needn't be, that was mostly the nicotine withdrawal talking. It's easy to miss things with the ropey formatting in those posts; it would be easier without the nested spoilers and crowds of notes but with such a large list the first page would become a nightmare to scroll through.

Levels with titles in black or blue should have alternate download locations. The levels with purple titles are the ones for which I couldn't find any alternate source.

Hey, so uh. The download links for this pack have died years ago, but THANKFULLY I've had a copy on my hard drive from a year or so ago that includes all the levels.

So, I've done my due diligence and rehosted them on MEGA. Download here. (https://mega.nz/#!TFkDQCKQ!80IMGPcbwnsS7rWe_IUCp9YUwjemMum8eRIoBLQ7zrA)

Let me know if it goes down again. Also -- if an admin wants to move the thread and/or edit the first post, feel free.
