Title: [Challenge][Normal] The Great Race

The new forum's levels page is still looking pretty empty, so I'll post this here to fill it up a bit. :)

The Great Race is the first level I made for Knytt Stories, but I spent a lot of time on it trying to polish and perfect it. The level doesn't have a lot of custom content in it if that's what you're looking for, but I focused on making it a fun platforming challenge with some nice scenery. I posted this on the old forums and received a lot of great feedback on it, but any comments or criticisms are still welcome. Have fun! :D

This is a really fun level! I even beta-tested it back when I was known as DragonMC.

However, I'd advise you to put the difficulty and type into the title.
"[Difficulty][Type] Level Name"

Not in the beta versions, maybe, but you can certainly save him in the final version posted here.

i think i saw a typo in the good ending somewhere. there was an extra "y" or something? not that big of a deal but it was still noticeable.

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like it. :)

I think I'm through doing revisions now, though. The majority of problems have been fixed, and I'm fine with a few S.G.E.s and typos. I just don't think it'd be worth the effort to fix them, upload a new file, and make you all download the level again. X)

I had to register, just to say how much I loved this level. First level I ever downloaded for KS; and I've got to say it's totally brilliant! Just everything about it, the storyline, and the Computer, and the amazing credits playground. Totally unique, but totally amazing too!  X)

I played this level quite a while ago and really loved it, I played through both of the endings, (you really make me stew in my guilt in the bad one you mean person >)) and even the though the bad one was alot shorter, it was still a brilliant level all the same.

Also, I have absolutely nothing against levels with no custom material, it adds to the mood of it and is almost necessary in environmental levels, but in a simple platforming one it's not really to important. :)

Quietely, is that Calvin by the way?

Jcn's activation. I thought it was a custom object at first! I looked at it in the editor to read everything and the number of screens is INSANE. Unfortunately, super Mario galaxy is copyrighted, and I don't think you can use the music. :sad:

I also really liked the museum. It helped you feel like you were actually in the game because you know more about the areas. There are a few errors in the credits. Firstly, there are no spikes on this tile.

Second, the space junk galaxy theme is by Koji Kondo, not Kenji Kondo. Still, great level.

To me, with my very poor reflexes, this was only mostly manageable - I had to remove one enemy in the editor at some point. (Yes, I cheat. I'm sorry, but my tolerance for frustration is low and I'm mainly here for scenery and the sense of travel.) Still, very nice concept, and nice, variable settings - I especially loved the museum under the sea. Also, I loved the credits, which are like a little environmental of their own.

Oh, and the zoo. Especially the blue bitey things trapped in little holes. Take that, blue bitey things! :D

i am completely stuck at the area where you turn around and save the computer and they tell you to try finding a way in from the outside... some help anyone?   O_o

i've jumped from column to column dozens of times... i've tried to double umbrella jump to scale the walls upwards... i've gone down each column to try and find a secret passage... and no luck!  :sad: is it just staring me in the face like a tard???  >(

and i have to say that has been my favorite level so far... i prefer a storyline... and that was just perfect :)

The correct entrance is just a couple of screens above the blocked entrance.

In other words, go outside and try to find a way to go up.

This is the most pleasing use of the original tileset that I have seen in a 3rd party level. I really like this level. You paid attention to composing the scene in a way that makes it seem like a natural environment.

I absolutely love this level. I'm impressed you managed so well with the pre-installed tilesets. I've tried to make far simpler levels than this and I always end up trying to make new sets because I need that specific tile that I couldn't find anywhere.

I like the story with the computer of course, that's the highlight of the level. Hope to see more from you soon?

I am in the area where the computer tells you he is going to kill you and all the walls have spikes on them.
I found a tiny piece of wall with no spikes directly above the save point but that doesn't seem to help at all.
What am I supposed to be doing in this area? Is it a dead end? And if so why the hell is there a save point?

Please help me  C)p

You may have already noticed, but the area is full of vents or whatever those are called. Meaning that there is some kinda wind or something that can bring you up if you have the umbrella equipped. Once you equipped the umbrella, you can make your way through the electrified (?) spikes. Make good use of the non-windy areas.

In other words, press D, and you will fly.

Sorry, I can't really remember how to get past it; I'm pretty sure it's "just" a very difficult jump and not a lack-of-powerup problem :/

Just played through this and really enjoyed it. It tested my skills well and the only place I really got frustrated was the room with two red bouncers and two grey spiky-helicopter-homing-in-things.

But the environments were pretty :P and very well put together. It's amazing how you got it all to look so good!
And the computer speech was awesome. That must have taken ages to put together!

Yes, that part's a bit tricky at first. You have to...

Have your umbrella out, and hold the right key for the entire jump. If you time it correctly, your head should bump up into the holes in the ceiling on both the first and double jump, and you should float safely to the ledge.

Thanks, it was very fun to make! I actually did that part all in one night as the idea came to me, but I was up 'til four in the morning lol. I was pretty tired at school the next day, but I think it was worth it.

I remember this level it was truly epic :)! In one of the earlier versions, though, I remember a very original challenge on the way to the "bad" ending with those red things that follow you at high speed, which was taken away to give a more "sad" feeling i suppose (what with it being so easy). Pity. Also at the start if you jump over the powerups and then down the hole, you are stuck forever >(.

As for future levels, I'm not actively working on anything of my own at the moment- too busy with school. I might restart Apocalyptic City, the environmental level I started, during summer vacation. No promises though.

I am occasionally producing tilesets for Boot Stamping on a Knytt Face Forever by JCGrim. Go check it out on the forums if you want, it's coming along slowly but surely.

Actually, if you want to play that bit, I made it into its own separate level called Monocromatica Grotta (The White Cave in Italian). You can find the thread here (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=1023.0) for the download.

As for that bug thing- LOL. I didn't know about that one. I assumed that players would automatically take the power-ups, not actively avoid them! Thankfully, that part's at the beginning of the level, so it isn't too big of a deal to just restart if it happens- they'll know what they did wrong.

This is easily one of my favourite KS levels, ever.

Great environments, great challenges that were tricky enough to test the skills of the player but not too hard to be frustrating, great story with the JCN (those shifts must have taken FOREVER X_X) and just all-round brilliant.

The best level I've played EVER! Everything is just perfect. It is long enough, has two endings, not even a single bug. Great storyline and some brilliant ideas about the places. I was a little surprised when I noticed that some part of this level is exactly the same like in    Monocromatica Grotta. I was also amazed with the amount of work You put in that part where... How do I do that spoiler thing? Sorry, I'm still quite new to the forum... Anyway, thank You very much for all the fun I had with this level and I hope for more levels like this one.

Hey hey, long time no see! :)

Sorry for the necro, but here's the scoop. I'm trying to get in the mood to finish the environmental level I started a few years ago, but I haven't touched KS in quite a while. So, in an attempt to get a feel for KS again, I decided to go back and tweak The Great Race for what will hopefully be the last time.

Changes are minor for the most part, but a TON of typos in the dialog have been corrected, SGEs pointed out have been dealt with, and I've adjusted the difficulty on a few screens based on feedback from players. I also added a warp to the beginning of the JCN gauntlet to prevent an awkward change in tone from lethality to hospitality when backtracking.

In other words... just polish. But whether you've played the level before or are hearing about it for the first time, I hope you will enjoy the effort I've put into it. Download link is on the first page. Have fun! :D

Because this topic is up again, I want to say, that I love seabed museum. I think it's one of the most funny ideas in KS. I hope you won't feel offended or something, if I release an old level of mine, that uses similar idea.

I played this ages ago, and again months ago, and one of my favorite things was the description of the bird that drops the white glowy hazardous things. It's stated that it is completely harmless, but periodically sheds the moisture from its wings, which might be dangerous to someone with an allergy to water. That cracked me up, and still makes me smile.  C)p
