Title: [Enviromental][Normal] Emma fell down a well (working title)
Post by: bulbapuck on February 21, 2013, 12:50:42
So a while back Salmoneous released his tilesets in *this thread* (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=2621.0). After this I gave myself the challenge to create an enviromental level using only those tilesets. Then I lost all my levels because I'm stupid and didn't back them up (this is the reason I left the forums, every time I even thought about KS I got angry at myself for losing all that work, it was all very stupid). But as I liked the idea behind this level I chose to do it again.

The story is about a knytt called Emma who one day falls down a well and has to find her way back. On the way she discovers a whole world hiding under the surface.

It's quite close to being finished, but will probably take a few more weeks. All the areas except one have been designed and only a few screens are remaining. The stuff I have left are cutscenes and secrets.

Some screenshots from the first areas are attached.

I was afraid we'd lost you Bulbapuck, and here you are with a nearly finished level. This is good news indeed! I'm digging the Knytt-like textures with muted tones. Looking forward to it.

Looking good. It will be so beautiful environmental level, I think.

Thanks for the encouraging comments :)

I'm essentially done with the level itself now. I think I can finish it off in a session or two (not counting cutscenes). But I have a few weeks now where I probably won't find the time to work on it at all. After that it looks like things are clearing up.

I'm new and don't know you, but the screencaps look great. Looking forward to this!  :)

That sounds like it could be a perfect time period in which to have others test the level.

Hmm, maybe. I have some things I want to get done before any eventual testing though.

Quick and insignificantly tiny critique: I find the floating waterfall in screen 3 a bit odd (where the waterfall cascades over... nothing).  Everything else is looking great and makes me look forward to this.

I believe this is pretty standard practice. It's supposed to be the water running off the side in addition to running over the edge.

I am kinda torn over this myself.
At first I didn't use this effect at all but I saw it in some level (I think it was falling water, not sure though) and felt that it worked.
I've only put it in where I feel it serves another purpose. In that particular screen for instance I experimented a lot with how the water would flow. In order to get the effect that I wanted I ended up having the water cascade that way in the above screen. The reason I have it in this one is more about consistency then anything else.
Thanks for the input though, I'm still going back and altering things that I'm not happy with so I greatly appreciate it :)

I've seen water used that way it in several levels. It's hard to create natural looking water features when everything is confined to squares. Headgrinder's treatment in White City is an interesting take, but I wouldn't call it an ultimate solution.

I know I've seen it done, but I've never been able to accept it.  It just seems too square.  Hence the custom object in White City as egomassive pointed out.  (off topic: I need to post that and my other tilesets in a thread as public domain by the way.  Whatever personal pride was preventing me from doing that before is finally gone.  XD )

Update:

Hmm, maybe. I have some things I want to get done before any eventual testing though.

I have done all that now. I haven't made any cutscenes or anything but the actual level is complete.

While I'm working on the cutscenes I was wondering if anybody wants to beta test the level? If you do, send me a PM. I'll make sure to thank you in the credits

EDIT: Cutscenes are done, and I now have all the testers I could ever ask for C)
