Title: [Challenge/Scenic/Epic Length] Cosmic Meltdown {3 Difficulties}
Post by: Fubaka on February 03, 2013, 15:04:36
After 15 months of on and off work and several subsequent patches over the years, I proudly present to all of you:

Featuring:

-A highly varied world to explore, from dry plains to deep forests, tall mountains, and so much more, drawn almost entirely by me!
-Non-standard music created by independent artists with their permission, as well as some public domain goodies!
-An in-depth, involving storyline which will possibly make you laugh and cry at moments, complete with branching conversation responses that you can make!
-A bushel of troll-faces!
-Loads of SECRETS, and I mean a TON!

Depending on the number of secrets you find, the difficulty will increase.  It starts at Hard, and as you progress in the secret zones, it gets harder until eventually reaching a few Lunatic challenges.

Download it here: Cosmic Meltdown 1.1.2_02 (https://www.mediafire.com/file/e02lbb9vte0851f/Fubaka_-_Cosmic_Meltdown_1.1.2_02.knytt.bin/file) (135 MB)

Thanks to everyone who helped me polish this level as much as possible over the years. I feel at this point the level is more yours than mine, so I hope you cherish it as such. As always, let me know if there are any remaining errors in the level, and I will fix them as soon as I can.

Okay, I suppose if enough remaining mistakes like that are found, I'll release another version to correct them.  I do wish you'd be a little more specific about which obstacles you weren't much of a fan of.

Man am I glad this level is finally released! So much work into it and I really hope people enjoy and appreciate it. It's definitely worth hunting down secrets (if you're up for a challenge). There's a lot more to this level than you think on the first play-through.

Good luck everyone! You're going to need it. <_<

Okay, I have uploaded a new version.  The only real difference is that a few relatively small wallswims were fixed, so it isn't mandatory to download this new version if you have the old one still.

I do wish you'd be a little more specific about which obstacles you weren't much of a fan of.

It's the general use of the more random enemies that spit projectiles and the fact that often the obstacle is just overcoming single enemies at a time in a normal boring way. In a few areas I felt I died because of the randomness. Certainly some people have a higher tolerance than I to it.

Not to say that every obstacle wasn't of my taste, I especially liked the

I saw a lot of potential in this level, and it certainly hooked me in for at least completing it, but I probably wouldn't have commented on the obstacles if there weren't some that I thought were really good. I can't say much negative on the other aspects of the level, as there were enough save points, looked and sounded great, and the story was interesting. I suppose maybe the text boxes that use one too many lines looked awkward but that's it.

I reached the good ending . I must say that it was sometimes too hard for me, especially the screen where you get hologram and screen with all those white flowers nearly behind it. I liked graphics and story, especially how did people in the village interact with each other. Juni is usually lonely wolf, so this put more originality into your level.

Just scratching the surface of this level, and enjoying it a lot.  Been a while sense I've played such an epic level, and this one has not been too hard so far, which I'm grateful for.  My rule is if I die 20 times at the same spot, I turn on the cheat, which I hate doing, but I haven't had to do this yet, so kudos to you.  XD  Very enjoyable.

Are you guys getting the detector? It will help you track down those keys. Also, if you didn't play the tutorial at the beginning, you should. It gives some very subtle clues about how to find some certain secrets.

I was a bit annoyed by this at first too. Then I realised the level is meant to be play-throughed multiple times from start to finish since it's pretty early on that the level changes based on secrets.

You should really consider releasing update packages for those who already have an old version of the level. The simple way to do this is to remove the music and ambiance folders before compressing the level. 109 MB is a lot to download repeatedly.

I suppose, though to be honest, for most people, downloading 109 MB isn't that big of a deal anymore.  It only takes my computer about 20 seconds to do it, and my connection is nothing special.

However, if anyone needs me to do that, I'd be happy to send them an update package in the manner you describe.

This is a good story, and you handled everything quite well.  I did have to gave up trying to find all the endings: too hard and time consuming.  I also thought it would be longer, but it is more an epic story than epic length I think (compared to number of areas in The Machine for instance).

Is Basalt Woods tileset usable?  It so beautiful I'd really like to use it.  Below is my favorite screen by the way.  The way you used the darker waterfall to imply depth was brilliant.  I don't think I've seen that done before.

To understand why it's epic length, you will need to hunt down one of the bigger game secrets.  To do this, you need to get all 4 keys and use them.  If you have to cheat to find this part of the game, then so be it.

Also, you may use any tileset in the level that doesn't say otherwise, and Basalt Woods is one of those you may use.  If you want to use the tilesets in there that mention being made specifically for Purple Ink, you will need to contact that user for permission.  I'm sure Purple Ink will let you do so if you ask.

I would like to announce the release of the first bonus video to my let's play of this level. Unlike my other videos, this one is an hour long, as I achieve a good ending. I still haven't managed to find any indication of the level being far longer than it appears. It seems assistance is required if I am ever to see it.

Changes:

This might be the last update done to this level, unless some more glitches and problems crop up.  I'd say as it looks, the level is near flawless now.

Oh my.
Well this is gonna be embarassing...

The level -was- good, and the story is what kept me playing, but...the enemies are way too random to be able to get through on skill. It's entirely luck-based on many of the screens. :/

That's not to say I didn't enjoy it, I really did. I really liked the story, but  the randomness of the enemies made some screens completely luck-based.

I give this level a B/5. *nod*

Well, it says the difficulty gets harder with each secret you collect, and I was raging at a few choice screens after my first secret. >.< It's a very good level, that's for sure! The story is great, the tilesets are all very stylized, and having to make a level of this sheer size is admirable! I thought of making something like this myself, once~

I just could -not- imagine how hard it is with all the secrets. xP Bit too tough for me, that's my only complaint, heh.

Fubaka, I'm confused. I got the red key, bringing my item total up to everything but the hologram and blue key. Where do I go next?

Edit: The passable wall to get back to the rest of the level wasn't working for me, possibly because I didn't have the red key at that point. I reached the ending, but I still didn't have the blue key. Is there some way (possibly involving God Mode) to go back to the appropriate area and get it? When ought I to have collected it?

Phew.

Well, this level (or as much as I've seen of it) is lovely, the story is engaging, the use of shifts to extend signs / dialogue -- and provide branching dialogue trees!! -- is brilliant (and must have been exhaustingly time-consuming), and the secrets are fun to find. :hiddenstar: for you!

Unfortunately, I got just far enough in to feel hooked on and immersed in the level ...before I ran hard up against a section too difficult for my LoCP-level skillz.
Spoiler: Specifically, (click to show/hide)
I have to agree with Pumpkinbot about the randomness of many of the enemies, and how much fun it isn't to have to have perfect reflexes and luck, especially when there are multiple screens like that between savepoints.

Ordinarily, with a level I've been enjoying this much until there's an abrupt spike in the difficulty curve, I'll just go into the editor and tweak the problem room or rooms so I can go back to playing properly. Since you specifically asked players to stay out of the editor, though, I've respected that. So, I have a few questions:

1) Should I give up on further backtracking re: the ghost eye (I'm presuming there's a powerup or some other reward on the far side of all those baddies) and just proceed into the mayor's house?

2) Can I get through the mayor's house without the backtracking, once I have the ghost eye?

3) Should I maybe start over (::cringe::) and avoid the ghost eye powerup?

4) Should I possibly give up on playing this level at all, unless (or until) you release a kinder, gentler version for players like me?

and

5) Are any of the animated custom objects and/or tilesets for public use? Because so many of them are so great! I'm particularly interested in using at least parts of the Wasteland sets, the Terminal Fields sets, and the Overgrown Fields set, which would work great in a level I'm working on...

@ The Jack: The easiest way to complete an adventure is to not pick up the eye. You'll only see a small fraction of the game's content, but frankly you've got to be a really good player to see it all.

Response to The Jack:

1: Obtaining the Eye puts you officially on the Harder Path.  If you want an easier game, do not collect it.  Of course, as Ego stated, most of the game's content can only be accessed through the harder path.

2: Once you have the eye, the Mayor's House is blocked off.  As it states, you must "Return to the caves".

3: (see 1)

4: I currently do not plan on releasing a peaceful version of this level.  My advice to you would be to hone your skills in KS by playing other levels.  Then, come back and see how this level feels again.

5: Yes.  You can use any of the tilesets in the level, except the ones that say you can't on them.  Also, the only CO that I would discourage you from using would be the one that is pictured in my avatar.  Unless you have a really cool idea with that particular CO, please do not use it.

With regard to the hard version of the level, most of it relies on skill and persistence rather than insane reaction times. There are a couple of screens, however, that require fantastic reaction speeds and a possibly fast computer to be beaten. These can, however, be easily beaten by using cheat mode (ask Youtube), since this allows you to become invulnerable and to teleport to anywhere you can click on.

You are definitely better off opening a second file and beating the normal version first. I assure you that it is satisfactory in both challenge and plot.

If you do try to get the best ending, it is very important that you get all the keys; I only got three in my first attempt at the hard path and had to try again. For that reason, here are progressively more precise hints to where the keys can be found.

Fast computer?  I've actually played and beaten this level on an old Windows 98 before. :P

Frame rate can be an issue sometimes, but if you have good timing, that won't matter most of the time when playing KS.

I get input lag from changing screens a lot and it frequently kills me. I also sometimes get input lag from rapid opening and closing of the umbrella, and sometimes the game can't handle too many inputs at once (S+right+up, for example, can fail to lead to climbing on impact.)

I also maintain that hovering through a two-block-high gap covering more than half a screen while avoiding six vertical lasers goes WAY beyond lunatic.

I just got to the four-keys ending! ...Wait, there's more?!

Fubaka, I have two questions. Firstly, what's the coordinate region for the post-game content? Secondly, why does the pillars section of x1032y960 seem harder than than the corresponding section of x1036y960?

Try playing Dark Sea 2 (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=5355.0), or any of SecretGlitch's other levels, then tell me what Lunatic is. :P

Oh yes, there's more!

To find the coordinates for that, I would ask that you consult the World.ini file, so I don't have to post them here.  In fact, if you have any questions about the secret content from here, please PM it to me.

Well, considering that those two screens are exactly identical in obstacle content, sans the lasers in the first one, the difficulty probably only lies in the angle that you are tackling it from.

Hm. I sometimes get problem-causing input lag when changing screens in the middle of any kind of fast-twitch move. For me, at least, the issue is related to my use of KS+ and its single-pass render setting. In every case thus far, temporarily disabling the single-pass render setting gets rid of the screen-change lag for me...

I beat Dark Sea for the second time a couple of days ago. No real problems. I'm a fair distance through Dark Sea II and Industrial Trap, and have done everything fairly except a couple of the more ludicrous timing challenges. I've beaten Candy Town, Advanced and Amidst the Clouds (which was problematic, but the other two are cakewalks). I am miserably stuck in Going Left, having encountered screens that seem impossible to beat by any means other than teleportation, even though I've examined them in the level editor. For a fairly long time I didn't play anything below Very Hard because they were no fun, and I'm much better now than I was then.

I reiterate: that room is simply not beatable unless you can act much, much faster than I can. I'll try it again with single-pass rendering off and see what I think then.

I think I had to use the official KS 1.2.1 release to beat one of the challenges in this level. The performance difference with the single-pass rendering turned off is minute, but there is a difference.

I attempted the pillars section of the ghostly version in both directions and had to cheat my way past, but I beat the lasers version on my first try. Either the shots are spreading wider, which seems unlikely, or I just got lucky, I guess.

A pretty nice level

The bad ending was funny  X-P

When I got to the end of the level I fell into the normal ending by mistake, even though I had the yellow key. Then when I went back I found the game auto-saved at the ending, so I can't know if I missed something special... Very annoying... >(

In any case the level felt a bit linear, and I'm not sure I'd want to go back through everything trying to find a hidden secret...

Good aspects of the level were good atmosphere and a good story, and also the challenges were quite fun and not too hard. The difficulty was more like "hard" than "very hard". Although the level was quite fun, the story and the challenges didn't feel very original. It's all stuff we've kind of seen before.

I suspect that if you are talking about the two choices you get at the end, one door is just open, and the other requires both the yellow and purple keys.  As far as I remember, there is no door in the normal run that only requires a yellow key.

Keep playing.  You may feel differently once you've found more secrets.  As I said to everyone else, the normal playthrough is only about 35% of the game's total content.

Throughout this thread is littered most of the hints for secret finding if you can't/don't want to find them yourself.

I love finding secrets. Took the detector, purple key, eyes, hologram ... oops, I read that it is necessary at this point to have two keys. Start playing again, I find a blue key, I come to the same place ... oops, I only have one blue key! Remember where he lay purple key, pass the game again and the place can not see the secret passage. Hmm. Now find tips on the forum and will continue to pass.

Found wallswim (in the screenshot), when he got the eye and returns through cave need to talk to the little man - and when you rise up, leaving the wall.

P.S. Basalt Woods sumptuous.

For a very long time I haven't played Knytt Stories. Today I decided to give it a try again.
Firstly I wanted just to play A Strange Dream to remind myself old times. But I changed my mind and I picked this one.

I was sursprised. Everything I loved about Knytt Stories came back.

Beautiful story, wonderful artwork and nice music. The level design is just perfect.
It has a touching atmosphere, giving me feeling I have known from Nifflas's levels.

Great work. Thanks for your time you spend creating this level. Giving a  :hiddenstar:.

I really liked the challenges there. There were so many new ideas.

I definitelly will play it again to find secrets.

What I can say about this level, which I can't really say about any other thus far, is that i was NOT able to play through it in one sitting.

First attempt. Got the bad ending.

Second attempt. Got a ways though the "very hard" path before I gave up and cheated on the tail end of things. Also I only got two keys.

Next up is the a legitimate four keys run. No cheats final destination. Then...

Ha-ha!  You just patched it and I found a bug!

There's a switch you can press at the start of the Silver Mountain area, the one that starts a brief quip from the mayor - if you're too far to the right (and left, probably, I didn't try that out) when you press it, you'll get quantized into the wrong spot, and you won't be able to scroll through the mayor's text!

There are also a handful of walls that should be no-climb and aren't, but they're in totally inconsequential places.

Hello, I am Hopeseeker.
Excuse me for grave-digging an old (but extremely well made) Level: Cosmic Meltdown.
I would have a problem with this level.
I end the level by finding all the four keys, then was teleported to the light green-ish extra area.

In this area all your items get removed except Run powerup, Climbing Powerup, Holo Powerup.

I get the Umbrella, I get the Yellow Key, then I get the hint where counting the Yellow flowers is supposed to be the first part of the secret. I think I have done so but I have found no use for this (yet).

I go to the area in the upper right where you can use the yellow key, however, the laser lock is already open.

The piston puzzle is already open. And when I use the key I get to talk with Fubaka but he just tells me I need to bring the key to the end of the level.

The piston puzzle is supposed to be closed and not already solved.
Fubaka is supposed to appear and not be there already.
Fubaka is supposed to say something more intelligent than just "ok, now get the key to the end of the level", and to speak a series of sentences ending with the > mark.
I can find no use for the yellow flowers count.
I can find no other secret in this area despite haveing looked very well everywhere.
This feels... broken somehow.
Please help. I don't mind being spoiled, I give up and actually I think there is a problem with the level. I am playing version 1.0.8 and I have only cheated to get the red key.

Greetings, Hopeseekeer. I'll try to troubleshoot the problem here, but I need a little bit more info from you first.

*Are you using standard Knytt Stories to play the level? If not, which mod are you using?
*How did you cheat to get the red key? (I.e. did you use the in-game warp, did you skip ahead using the editor, etc.)

Once you've answered these, I might have a better idea of what happened.
Title: Re: [Challenge/Scenic/Epic Length] Cosmic Meltdown {3 Difficulties}
Post by: Hopeseekeer on June 12, 2018, 08:38:24
Hello Fubaka, after "stalking" on the forum for a long time it feels weird/ kind of a honour to speak to you. :O

I got the red key by pressing Control + Shift + C and then spacebar + right click to avoid threats.

I am using Knytt Stories Plus 1.3.4

Thanks for the help, hopefully we can solve this. I wouldn't want to go to the next area before finishing this one but I don't get what it's supposed to happen here.

By the way if the piston puzzle was not open already, if the solution is in the yellow flowers, then the two things would "connect", and so it would make sense. I would have one way in mind one could figure out to use the number. Otherwise I would have no idea on how to solve it.

I cannot be 100% sure if the secret is even related to the piston puzzle obviously.

Maybe I'll start and go through the whole level again and see if the problem is still there. Maybe I just screwed up something. What I'm really worried about is if the level is ok for other people, I don't want other people to arrive there and find the piston puzzle open. If I screwed up something I guess that's ok. (the curiosity remains)

>>>edit: not even OOBs and cheats have worked, no way to get to the avatar screen and him saying intelligent things, my savegame was just too screwed up. So I have gone through the level again (with OOBs because it took a long time to do this legitimately and it was just a test) and the piston puzzle is closed, working. Yay

So indeed I had somehow screwed up something, and the level is OK. Let's not try to figure out what problem it was, our time is more precious.

Now.... how the hell am I supposed to open this laser gate LOL please at least give me a strong hint or am I supposed to just bruteforce this? The flower count doesn't seem to help.
Thank you

Gave a star for the obviously well executed level and explained a bit better what happened.

Title: Re: [Challenge/Scenic/Epic Length] Cosmic Meltdown {3 Difficulties}
Post by: Fubaka on June 12, 2018, 16:57:26
So I think I discovered what the problem might be. Whether or not the piston gate is open in the flower area depends on whether Flag 0 is set or not. Nothing is supposed to set it prior to your arrival there, but I discovered an old leftover shift that set it in the main level that wasn't supposed to be in use anymore. I deleted the flag trigger here, so hopefully that will solve the problem. I will do some additional testing and maybe clean a couple of things up for a 1.0.9 release some time soon.

As for how to legitimately get past the piston puzzle, you seem to have spelt out all of the in-game hints. The yellow flowers in question refer only to the ones in the caves, not on the surface (in 1.0.9, I will have the yellow flowers on the surface changed into red flowers). So what you need to do is follow the line of yellow flowers from the beginning of the underground section to the location of the yellow key. Take note of how many are on each screen. That should be enough for you to solve the puzzle.
Title: Re: [Challenge/Scenic/Epic Length] Cosmic Meltdown {3 Difficulties}
Post by: Hopeseekeer on June 12, 2018, 23:42:31
Oh I see! Yeah maybe I have triggered this flag you are talking about. No idea how else this could have happened. Thank you! In any case I am now back on track (after an ashaming number of cheats and OOBs to reach the flower area from a fresh save) and I haven't triggered anything, the gate is properly closed.

So, the flowers in the very very early part of the level do not count.
I am laughing so hard now, because I thought I was very intelligent, having counted -every- yellow flower, yes, even the one on that unreachable area on the left!!! XD So if they are not 31, ok, I will try to open it with the other number  :D You can just bruteforce the puzzle, but doing it understanding what you are doing is obviously more fun!

On a side note, if you are releasing a 1.0.9, maybe you can consider

I will not be giving out hints for the Bad Endings, as those are supposed to be the real easter eggs. You'll just have to comb around in the Editor if you can't find it legit.

As for this new update, I am currently planning on changing up some of the challenges as well. I made this level 5 years ago, and some of the elements within could use some streamlining. I almost felt like making a new area entirely, but maybe I should save it for a new level instead. Look out for the update within the next few days.

One mystery remains for me:

I've attached screenshots of wall-swims at x907y705 and x1031y953. Turns out these red crystals can be climbed from the side.
Also, if you go down from x920y708 (by first gliding from the left with umbrella), you end up in a void screen.

Greetings. It's been a while, but I have a new version of this level for you.

Cosmic Meltdown - Version 1.1.1
Changelog:
You can access the new version via the original post in this thread, which has been updated.

Please let me know (preferably on Discord) if there are any more issues with the level. I want to leave Cosmic Meltdown flawless by the time this world ends.

So, after watching someone play the level live, I discovered a few more issues which I have now fixed. This is not a huge update, but it does improve some things, particularly in the bonus area. Here is the changelog:

Cosmic Meltdown - Version 1.1.2_01
Changelog:
You can access the new version via the original post in this thread, which has been updated.

As before, let me know if there are issues with this version, either old or new.

EDIT: Another void screen was discovered at the very very end of the level, so made a quick hotfix to address it.

Hi. I have faced some issues after meeting with the mayor and telling her about the machine and the end of the world.

While walking, at some points the whole layout changes suddenly, which I understand is totally on purpose since the world is melting away. However when this happens and I go back to previous screens I am able to climb some invisible walls and reach the void that I am pretty sure should not happen.

It happened in version 1.1.1 and now I downloaded 1.1.2_01, started the same save and the same happens.
You can see the issue in this video: https://www.dropbox.com/s/sixhcppra6mq8ak/2022-03-13%2021-54-48.mp4?dl=0

Loving the level so far!

Ah, I see what the problem is. I'd installed a wall there to prevent the player slipping past a shift tripwire, but I hadn't taken into account the idea that the player could approach that particular trigger from the other side. I'll have that fixed and a new version uploaded shortly. Thanks for pointing that out.

EDIT: The fixed version is out now, and has replaced the old one. Version 1.1.2_02. You can find it on the first post.

Happy to contribute. It is all fixed now thanks!, I also realized that I was trying to go back when it wasn't needed.

Well it's not your fault for trying to go back. It's my fault as a designer for failing to properly account for such a situation. I realized when going back to fix the issue that I had set a trigger there way back when to specifically cause something to happen if you tried to go back, but when I was making my fixes for 1.1.1, I mistakenly believed that you'd be approaching from the left, like with the other ones. :P

Well, before we get to talking about the red key, did you ever find the Eye powerup?

Actually not, only the enemy detector power-up!

I see. Well, you'll need to find the eye powerup early in the level if you want any hope of finding the red or blue keys. Try starting a new game and searching for it before you speak to the mayor of Juni's village.

Thanks! that clue was all I needed to find it. It really feels like a whole different level once you get the eye.

I did quite a bit of progress. Usually I stay away of hard or lunatic levels... I am not so good when things get challenging. However I this time I took the challenge! question:

Yeah, that part is possible, just a bit harder without High Jump. You do need to save the double jump to give you that extra bit of oomph, but you also need to make good use of the current to gain the extra height you need. It may help to remember that holding down the S key with the umbrella out causes currents to lift you with more force.

Well thank you for the tips. I managed to do the jump thanks to holding S. Great level! I had fun trying and trying to advance as it got more and more difficult. At the end I had to give up here:

I evaluated it and tried several times and I am convinced this is as as far as I can go, but I am still happy with what I managed!

I also couldn't manage to do the next jump here to get to the secret area:

I'm glad you had a good time with it. I'm not too surprised that the screen you mentioned is where you got stuck. I think that is commonly cited as the hardest screen (that isn't secret, at any rate). Maybe one day you can come back and give it another go, so don't throw away your save file.

Also, regarding the second screen, I would recommend coming back to that on the normal path so you can use the high jump. That'll make it easier to get in there.
