Title: Reviewing music
Post by: Santicol on January 06, 2013, 03:46:50
Well, it's pretty simple. You have to post a music video of any song. Then someone's gotta review it. The reviewer is gonna post another music video, and so it goes on...

RULES:
Since sometimes children come across the forum (like me), songs gotta be appropriate, that means no swearing / sexual content / etc. etc...

Videos MUST be from Youtube.

No jokes / screamers / unrelated videos.

So with the rules done, LET'S START!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyqWjl7GkCE

Reviews have to be descriptive.

So... i'm supposed to write my opinion on it, then ask someone else his opinion on something else?
Title: Re: Reviewing music
Post by: Santicol on January 08, 2013, 21:24:21
Then you recommend another song, so someone else reviews it. And then it goes on.

I rather like it, especially at how it ends. Somewhat unrelated, but the music video is interesting as well~

Having heard about Squarepusher for years but never really listened to him I came into this song with overly high expectations. I'm sorry to say Dark Steering seemed unexceptional compared to similar minimalist techno and chip/glitch-inspired dance music I've heard in the past, though I assume Squarepusher was a trailblazer of sorts. I found the song inoffensive but I'd rather it provoked more of a reaction (in either direction). The visuals were pretty great, though!
6.5/10

Something I don't really get: is this game meant to showcase cool music or cool videos? Until this is clarified, I offer the next player a choice between cool music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pp0_7gXpBk4) and cool video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc3JWo2iiGc).

I certainly love Elton's job with this song, but lately, I've been listening to.. well.. the type of music you said was terrible.

OK Go has a reputation for gimmicky music videos, but they make 'em better than pretty much anyone else. I haven't seen that one before, but for a video consisting almost completely of dog tricks it was pretty compelling. Music wasn't half bad either.

I'm not a big 80's fan. And while I like some of the early 80's art rock groups, Talking heads is not a favorite. Nevertheless, the song is pretty okay. 4/10

Wow... heaps of vocaloid and touhou music. Funnily enough my friend has been sending me links to those exact songs.  :P2

Anyway, the song is pretty good. It gets a bit "dreary" at times, but maybe its because I'm tired. But you can't really go wrong with slayer, even if there is no video. The intro is quite good, with a dark sinister lead up to the rest of the song. It does a good job of pacing. Whilst I'm not a particular fan of thrash metal (particularly the vocal style), the vocals do fit the style well. I give it a 7/10.

Anyway, here is my song:

I don't think I really "get" metal, and this song was no different. I've never even heard of Before the Dawn before (apparently they're from Finland), but uh, I guess they're okay if you like metal? I dunno, the most interesting part for me was the heavy drumming in the intro, and I didn't even like it that much.

I agree. The intro was quite interesting but the rest was meh. Knowing the retrospect of metal this is just another unoriginal band in the now shitty Scandinavian scene.

Your song was very lame and stupid. Best thing was a pretty sweet keyboard but otherwise 2/10.

Impressive video, but I feel like the song suffered for it. It was a little toneless, and I can't imagine the complicated set-up helped that.

Well, I'm not much of a Who fan at the best of times and that track isn't even what I'd consider the best of The Who; just a formulaic vehicle for a crude double-entendre.

To be fair, I'm the wrong audience to judge them. If I'm gonna listen to something from the 60s it has to be Sabbath; I like to hear the blues influence in my early heavy rock :P

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XjJjjur8f8 - I'm afraid the audio quality is pretty awful but it does the job on the softer parts <_<

Love Genesis and song is good 6/10. I am not so much into their career after Duke since most prog-bands went full synth-pop but Genesis is probably the one progrock band who did it right. Though yeah.. Prefer the Peter Gabriel period over the Phil Collins.

I've not listened to a huge amount of Aphex Twin but the two tracks I've heard more often than any others are more.. "meaty" than the content of Drukqs. The tracks I'm thinking of are totally outside the bounds of this thread's rules, though.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BFBIUI8YwU

Reminds me of the darkness, really. It's the kind of track I'd not switch of in a car but not something I'd listen to deliberately. Maybe I shouldn't be playig this game, really; I like challenging music but I don't really want to inflict most of what I listen to these days (as opposed to what I used to listen to more often) on people out of the blue.
Back to the topic at hand, it's fine as background but lacking any real character or energy that would seriously interest me.

I picked the first song, full well expecting something that would bore me and that I would not like, but I was pleasantly surprised. I've heard of Bloc Party before, only on /b/ though.  :P2 It's still not exactly my kind of music, but if they're generally like this, I'm sure I wouldn't mind listening to some more songs. I only own Silent Alarm (their first album) which was released just around the time I stopped buying music. I'd recommend that album wholeheartedly but it's one of those... "Two-EPs-shuffled" kinda albums (Manson's Mechanical Animals is always the first example I think of)... there are relatively upbeat, energetic tracks like Banquet (and Helicopter, Like Eating Glass, Price of Gasoline) and then slower, downbeat tracks (almost approaching shoegaze style, like Scarling) like Blue Light, Compliments and Plans.

I hope I haven't put you off too much; it's very well mixed and does hang together as an album if played start-to-finish :P

The second alternative link worked for me. As new wave goes it wasn't bad but, speaking purely for myself, it's not the kinda thing I take much pleasure in listening to. It feels far too monotonous, especially for a track that long. There's nothing in the music that interests me and lyrics aren't really my thing. I prefer the lyrics to be a part of the musicality of the track, not the only significant aspect.

My choice of track this time might just demonstrate how hypocritical I can be when it comes to music but what the heck; no accounting for taste, 'ey :P

This sounded a whole lot like a lullaby, from the subdued and somewhat repetitive guitar line to the guy's really soft vocals. It actually reminds me of a much softer Norwegian Wood; it even has a really similar subject!

Gone already. Random Access Memories videos don't last long! I'm guessing it was Touch? I can't deny I enjoy that track (especially the main hook), but I prefer the high-concept weirdness of Giorgio by Moroder or the straightforward disco of Get Lucky to this, which I regard as falling in between those two approaches.

Pretty great stuff, as is everything that makes it onto Ubiktune (http://ubiktune.com/). I've been meaning to listen to Protodome's Blue trilogy in full for ages, though I had heard this track before. The melody reminds me of the Super Mario World theme.

Exactly the type of response I was expecting, sadly. There's this thing called not everyone has the same taste in music. Like, song you just sent me... Now for something a little more laid-back. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByBGgiacuCc)

There's only a few people left playing this forum game... Oh well.

About the song you sent me, I quite enjoyed it. The lyrics were rather abstract and the music quite light, and I quite liked the singing. So, yeah, very nice.

Here's my choice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6psOf1B79w

I goddamn adore the album that song came from.

Edit: I've also been listening to a lot of St. Vincent now. Maybe it's my mood, but wow, she's just amazing. The song you sent me is mainly what I've been listening to, so yeah.

I liked the eerie beginning, and that bass line when the song opens up is so kickass. The lyrics are a bit too trite in my opinion, but overall still cool song. 7.5/10

Musically it's quite nice and mellow but the singer and the lyrics kills it for me. Seem to be the stuff couples in love listen to or something, in any case it's not my cup of tea.

note: long instrumental song, reviewer don't necessarily have to listen to it all.

Holy fuck this has been left alone for way too long.

Anyways, although calm instrumental is usually not my type of thing, this is really beautiful. I really like how the song changes as it goes.

So, in case someone else decides to continue this as well, here's my song (oh and it's live because I can't find a good not-live on in Youtube.)
