Title: [scenic/challenge][normal] Many islands
Post by: Polana on August 26, 2012, 13:55:53
So, here it is. Finally.
I did not managed to upload it to the level to Level archive, so if someone could do it for me, I would be very pleased.
I used Czech service ulozto.cz instead of it. It is sometimes little tricky, so if you will have some problems, try program
called free rapid downloader - it is faster and safer and you don`t have to sign in (I have not anything with the creators of that program, I am just happy user).

Well, I hope you will like it.

[edit 30-04-2021: removed broken link and added knytt levels link]

[mod]changed title to scenic/challenge, rather than environmental/challenge, as a level can't be both. Environmental means: no enemies/hard to take routes/danger, just beauty.[/mod]

I'm downloading it, but that hosting service seems really slow. I suggest Mediafire (http://mediafire.com) when there are problems with the archive, you should take a look at it.

Here is a Mediafire mirror: http://www.mediafire.com/?xxpre4fzsxco0e7
Can't seem to upload to the archive either.

This level is huge and very charming! It could use some polish, though: it's often hard to tell what scenery is solid and what is not just by looking, and it is possible to get stuck if you fail to collect a key before being captured. I hope you continue updating it!

I really loved your use of my Vestiges tileset (great colour combinations). If you want to fix the way Juni runs and climbs on it, replace that tileset with the updated version in this thread (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=5192.0). I made some invisible changes that improve collision detection.

Raicuparta, thank you for uploading it on Mediafire.
Sergio, fixed version will be in few days (I hope so, but I have to do some things for school - I promised they will be done after holidays, but I did not started with them yet).

I've really enjoyed this level so far, especially the diversity of tilesets and the use of lots of sound effects (like the groaning of gears or the sound of waves).  :)

By the way, if you care about this sort of thing, you go through a couple void screens if:

This was a really cool level. I got a little confused/disoriented/frustrated with the neverending looping that can be done near the end with the doors/warps because I didn't know what to do or where to go. Still though, it was a good level. The changing environment from day to night to day was a nice touch.

some void screen stuff:

Really, fun level! Confusing with all the warping but I like puzzle challenges. However I've got so lost I can't find the win!

I liked it. Thanks for using so many of my tilesets, it's nice to see them being used. The way you used cutscenes was very effective.

Although it felt very much like an environmental most of the time, I'm afraid you can't classify Many Islands as an environmental/challenge. It can't be both. It's a challenge. However, we have a rogue classification, scenic/challenge, that would be quite fitting.

edit to add: *gives star*

Not an environmental after all, eh? In that case, downloading now.

EDIT: That was a lot of fun!  C)p A really good level! Well done!
Also, it was a nice surprise seeing my knyght tileset appear there, and you used it really well.

I liked the changes from night to day and back; really cool. Some screens were missing ambience, like water. And the screens of sky were generally rather bland and sometimes didn't match the screen below them very well, which was a shame.
One other word of advice would be to suggest to ask someone to check the spelling and grammar of your level, as your English isn't perfect. But it's a small issue; you could always understand what was being said. I suppose it adds a certain charm. :P

Overall, this was a really good level, one of the best new levels I've played for a while. Fun challenges (the difficulty was just right for me) that were rarely frustrating (which is great) and really, really good-looking scenery (you clearly have an eye for graphic design). I didn't want it to end! So thanks, and well done.

Thank you all for your advices and exceptions. It is great to hear good things about my level from people whose works I like
and admire. So here is version two.
Major changes:
You can't stuck yourself in castle because of uncollected keys.
I put same keys into that unnecessary and confusing warping part on the end, so you can find them here, if you forget to
take them earlier. If you have all keys, you don't have to go there.
I added ambiance into the screens where it was missed.
I updated Vestiges.

Download links for v2 are in the first post.

Well, I'm planning some level about secret agents and A-bomb. It will take some time.
By the way, what about your Tower of lighting ? I am looking forward to it.

After wacation, I'm going to finish it. "The Tower of Lightning" is almost finished.
Wow, someone is waiting for my level :o

It makes me return the feeling when I first play the knytt's story. I like most of it, especially that feeling from one island to another, that from dark to daylight. I have been imagining making such a level like this one!

However, the part of end seems a little confused, I can't find a way to get out. You have put some different pictures together, but it's a little inconsonant, isn't it? ;)

Anyway, very good level, congratulations!

Sorry for answering so late.
@sphere:
Thank you. If you obtained all keys, it is not necessary to go there. I cannot made myself to abandon this part.
@santicol:
Some pictures are at preview topic.
But here are two more ones just for you:

I liked this level. The music really fit the screens, and you are excellent at getting the most out of tilesets. You took tilesets I have never seen used creatively before, and whipped into a gorgeous scene. :)

I do have a few complaints, though.
It was a little annoying being forced to sleep every few areas. I think maybe if it just got too dark to successfully play, or if there were deadly critter infestations, it would have felt a lot more realistic.
It was also a tad annoying that I couldn't back trace without suiciding in a lake, after telling myself I am going the wrong way :P

All in all, though, it was a very enjoyable level.

@ ixMarcel:
Thank you for making that video and for liking it so much.
I am not going to make sequel, but i started working on level based on Gustav's daughter and with custom tilesets.
There is not enough things done for preview topic.

@ CWolvie:
Thanks !  :)

I've sort of had a quick look around the first four or five islands of this... I *love* it. So, so much. You are excellent at building "living" environments, and you do all the things I appreciate especially about using pre-existing tilesets: combining them in interesting ways, using them creatively, and layering stuff also in the foreground instead of just in the background.

Been playing more of this. Still absolutely love most of the scenery. Getting kind of confused about where to go first, occasionally - which wouldn't be so bad if it was possible to go back and just do an area you missed later; but as far as I can see, that's not possible. I actually went back to the beginning when I first noticed that I had missed at least one area, but missed the right moment to access it again.

Yes, more people who were playing MI see it as major disadvantage. Maybe one day I will make better version...
(But I don't promise anything, I have tons of more important things to do (my exams, thesis, garden etc.) and I am working on another big level).

Currently really enjoying getting lost in the castle. :-)

It almost makes me think the witch can't be all evil: clearly, having magically assembled so many diverse and beautiful environments in her castle, she appreciates beautiful scenery as much as I do. :D

I love your music choices, I think they match the scenes perfectly. I liked the sleeping aspect, it did make everything seem longer. It wasn't too hard or too easy.

My only mixed feelings comes from the homage/random level museum at the end. On the one hand, it makes things confusing, and on the other hand if it adds a sense of mystery and infinite worlds-beyond-worlds that the player can never truly explore. I'm also not sure if there was any point to them... was there some reason to go through them all, the dynamite hidden in some random level? If not, that's what I think it needed... a reason to venture into the unknown dimensions to find something you need... and also a secret somewhere to access.

I liked the running joke of the old man trying to find peace. It caught me off guard when he was the "newest resident" who the other Knytts asked you to introduce yourself to.  C)p
