Title: [Hard/Challenge/Epic Length] I Dreamed of the Sky
Post by: Talps on June 22, 2012, 19:07:51
Wow! This level began development sometime around August 2010. And now, at last, it's here! My second epic-length level:

When I was a Child
I Dreamed of the Sky

Download me! (http://www.mediafire.com/?8ofdevdk8xw20tm)
Mirror! (http://www.sendspace.com/file/mhw56c)
Mirror! (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/32397399/Talps-IDreamedoftheSky.knytt.bin)

Juni has lived all her life in a tiny, underground village, told stories of monsters that dwell in the tunnels above, and yet her dreams are full of bright lights, open spaces and myriad other wonders that her reality lacks, and perhaps it's better to die seeking a mythical light than to dwell your whole life in shadow. On her journey towards the unknown world above, she will begin to uncover the mystery of why her people live in hiding, squalor and fear, as her actions disturb a long-sleeping danger.

I Dreamed of the Sky features a complex plot, bucket-loads of custom graphics, flags, cutscenes and my first attempt at a large puzzle. It's many screens long with over an hour's worth of gameplay.

Turn down the lights and turn up the volume. Explore, discover, awaken and dream...

(For anyone who plays and likes this and fancies a bit more of a challenge, you can check out the original, harder versions of the upper levels (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=5399.0).)

i tried to like this level but gave up at the pipe/water puzzle, not being sure if putting the mental effort to solve it would be worthwhile

besides things that are more down to taste (ugh, lotsa text), i don't like how the level starts with ~20 screens of static lasers, a couple of minutes of good old tedious timed waiting

I actually also stopped playing at that area, but I was really almost done with the puzzle, but I'm going back to it as soon as possible. But I admit I took a break because I became a bit annoyed with it.
I just generally hate laser challenges for some reason, seem to be way overused in many levels, but I didn't really see it as a negative point, because as soon as I see a laser challenge in a level I already hate that particular challenge.
Apart from that I am really enjoying the level, despite the difficulty being just a bit above my skill level, but I feel like it's gonna be worth it.

I was one of the playtesters, and I didn't find the water puzzle that hard. Sure it took me quite a while to understand its mechanism, but its very logical.

My tip would be: if this is real, how would it be? Use this knowledge to solve it. :)

I don't know about ortolson, but my problem wasn't with difficulty, I figured it out almost immediately, the only problem for me was that the exit wasn't clear at first so I screwed up at the end, which meant I had to repeat a bit of platforming and I wasn't feeling like it at the time. But I actually thought it was a nice puzzle, much like other puzzles in Talps levels.

and I'm sorry that you guys didn't enjoy them much. I did try and alter their use, so sometimes they're a major thing and other times they're integrated with other puzzles.

I like what LPchip said about Level 4. I was trying to make it a little bit Zelda-ish, and it's fairly straight forward when you know how it's done. You've seen one or two things in the level that you know you want before you turned the console on. Just focus on working out how to reach them.

It is pretty text-heavy. There's a lot of story to tell and sadly that's the easiest way to tell it, especially in the context of the setting. But there aren't many bits of story you actually need to read - mostly they're just telling the story, and I can only think of three that contain particularly important information for the player.
Still, I did say I wanted to use KS as a medium for strong storytelling, and that isn't everyone's cup of tea.

But thanks everyone for your positive comments; it's really great to hear what's being liked. :D Hopefully I can learn from the positive and negative criticism as I go on.

Man, now I want tea.

Just finished the level. Pretty fun! The challenges were fairly varied and enjoyable for the most part, particularly a few instances involving shifts that suddenly presented Juni with immediate danger with juuusssst enough time to react. That's much more fun than having an impossibly short time to react and passing on the second attempt, so kudos there. :)

A few things that could stand addressing, though...

Other than that, the level was pretty fun! Looking forward to future installments to get a bit more closure on the story. :)

Mediafire or some free uploading host can store various downloads for you in one page. So just one link to the downloading page with all your levels. Otherwise post your newest in your signature and wait for the new knyttlevels to come out.

I made this substitute signature for you if you want it. Exactly 450 characters! Copy, paste, and be amazed! Feel free to remove the first level, that's mostly there to show that there's room for one further level using the same method.

Well, I didn't use the flag advice you gave me for level seven (three doors, three switches, two realities) because I'm incompetent with flags, but I appreciated it just the same.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Sorry the pipes were a bit awkward. Juni moves out a little when she jumps though, so just jumping straight up will get you over them.
As for the lasers, I designed that little puzzle ages ago, with the intention that a player would go up the closest passage, which is safe, and find out which way to go, but it didn't work very well and I wouldn't use it again.
I must also thank you, B-Man, for the lesson in giving players time to react. Monocromatica Grotta is one of my favourite levels, and I confess that level 5 is a little bit of a homage.

Thanks for the positive comments everyone; it's really great to hear.

I'll try out your suggestion, Sergio.
EDIT: That looks great, though I might change the images some time. I can dispense with the single-word descriptions since I have pictures - I just didn't like giving only the name. Thanks! (Also, impressive research!)

You really did a nice job here. I actually just signed up to comment on this post and to leave a big "Thank You" here for you.
I played a lot knytt levels and ok, it could have been a bit more difficult, but I think, that it was a really nice mix between some challenges and exploration/puzzle. And the story... just fantastic. It's one of the best stories of all the levels I played.

Thanks again and I really hope there will be a sequel  :D

This was a very good level. Some parts were really hard for me (harder than the supposed hard part you took out) but I managed through it barely. The custom objects and tilesets were great. And if this was too much text for people I shudder to think what they'll think of me. Some of the ways you used shifts and custom objects I really enjoyed and wish I could lay claim to thinking of myself. Good job.

Plural, I look forward to reading it all!

Oh? Care to be specific?

And if this was too much text for people I shudder to think what they'll think of me.
Speaking for myself, I only dislike too much text when you force the player to go through it all, or when it feels like it just isn't necessary. IDotS (ooh, such a nice acronym you got yourself, Talps!) balances it well and what is told through all the text is always interesting. The text that is forced on us is essential for the progression of the plot, and everything else is optional.
But when the first thing a level shows me is a huge boring introduction, I tend to just skip the whole thing after the first few screens, because the level maker didn't try to make me interested first.
Title: Re: [Hard/Challenge/Epic Length] I Dreamed of the Sky
Post by: Talps on June 30, 2012, 19:16:19
Was their too much text in my introduction? I think splitting it into several scenes with one or two sentences is a lot better than one long screen of text.

When you did the shifts into the pipes that seamlessly changed from an outside view to an inside view, I was like "Damn, I wish I had done that."

I think the amount of text wasn't bad at all - although some of it overlapped with what you learned from the communications, about the opinions of the leaders and all. Creative text placement helped to break it up a little.

By the way, AMAZING LEVEL. I played a little while ago, but haven't posted yet. I thought the variety of challenges was the best part, how each level had a distinct feel to it. I second plural's comment about the shifts, and cite the opening and closing doors. My biggest complaint really isn't a complaint, but an admission of laziness on my part - I found it hard to keep track of the different characters in the past who were writing the logs. A symbol to go with each, or even a different colored font for each person, would have done a lot to help out players there.

Belated congratulations on achieving such a great accomplishment! So what's NEXT...? :P

*Chortles in joy*

What's next is probably an epic-length level I started work on before this, and then gave up on. now this is done, I'd like to get it done and out there, though it's going to take some doing to bring what's made up to standard, not to mention overcoming all the issues that halted it in the first place. I believe there's a very old preview thread for it several pages back.

I've lost interest in KS due to the fact, that no more great levels were released. I've came back after a while, and I must say that this one brings me new hope. Great job! I really enjoyed playing this level. Too bad it wasn't a little harder, but I guess it's kind of hard to make a difficulty which satisfies all of the people.

It truly deserves a high note, so I'd give 7/10. Really, really nice level :)

Initially it was harder, but that would exceed the "hard" difficulty that talps was after. I'm a hard skilled player and I liked the difficulty as it is. I had a bit of trouble with the first version where it touched extra hard in some areas and one in particular I gave up on. Talps has fixed it so I have been able to beat the entire game now. He made a few areas easier just because he saw me fail at them. I bet he just got bored of watching me fail and was like... I better make it easier, hoping that magically this video changes and I can see the rest. :P

I'm about half way through this level right now...just needed to stop playing and post a comment saying that it is really really fun. Best level I've played in a while. The difficulty is perfect.

I really like how you use the same screens several times by activating various components and traps. So when I pass through a section, I'm thinking "Damn! This will be tough when I turn the power on!"

Thanks for the comments everyone; glad you're all enjoying it. :D

Greyface, when you complete a level in a computer game, you can't usually backtrack to explore previous levels. That's what I was going for.
Establish careful rules for the player that they come to understand and expect. Then see 'em squirm when something goes wrong. :P

Glad you're liking the difficulty, Dave. That's always hard to get right. I kind of think there are actually two versions of 'hard'; there's hard for the people who aren't great at platformers, and there's hard for the hardcore platformers, like myself. I think there's about an equal balance of the two on these forums, so pleasing more than half the people with your difficulty is always a challenge.
But I think I've more or less got the hang of hard-core hard.

I just replayed this level for the second time. It's still awesome! Sorry if this has been mentioned before or fixed in a newer version, but the lamp post in screen x1038y871 is on layer 3. How did you make the background there, level 1? It's very nice.

You're the first person to notice the lamp, which surprises me 'cus I was previously sure I'd walked that way.
The backgrounds were made by a friend. All I did was make them fit as I wanted and darken them too much for when the lights went out.

Having replayed this for the competition, I have to stand my ground and say that this is my second favorite level of all time, with Eurydice being the first. This is a truly epic story with hints at a much larger world that begs revisiting and further expansion. The levels are detailed and rich with intricacies, and polished to perfection. It's got clever, unique puzzles perfect for my personal skill level; they're difficult, but never frustrating. If anyone is on the fence as to whether they should play it, for Knytt's sake, play it, it is well worth it.

I've replayed this because of competition and I can't believe that I have not written it before, so: It is one of the best levels I've ever played. When Juni found the message from surface, I was actually scared what is going to happen, so the story really taken me in.
There is something about sequel at the end. Are you really going to make one? I wonder, if there are other Knytts on the surface.

I've just finished playing all of your stories one by one  :) Enjoyed all of them, thanks. The best one, imho, was I Dreamed of the Sky. I'm waiting for more, do you work currently on new one?  :)

I'm currently work on 2 projects. I have two others that are partially done to a greater or lesser degree but that I'm not working on at the moment - both because of tileset issues :(.

Thanks for the reply, though. Great to hear the positive comments from you all!

To rectify my earlier criminal activity on the contest thread you just won, I'll say it here as well: I really enjoyed I Dreamed of the Sky. A good story is one of the things that I look out for in game playing and this reminded me of reading Hugh Howey's WOOL series, so I got what I wanted. Nice challenges, just a really tidy effort all round.

This was absolutely amazing. It's probably my favorite hard level ever.

Not only does the level have a very intresting graphical style, but the design of the challenges is amazing.

Thanks! :D Glad you like the scenery; I'm not always happy with the graphics I produce but there were some areas of this that I was really happy with. Level 4 (the pipes area) was originally going to have a background made with the grey version of the tileset used in Levels 6 and 2, but I was using the gradient I settled on while building tilesets and decided that it suited much better; I like how the lightness of the area contrasts with the darkness of the previous areas, which suits the mood of the area well; I wanted that level to feel safer, to give a chance to get your breath back after the intensity of the previous few sequences.

I really loved the tangled vegetation I used in Level 3, especially where it grows over robots, doors and consoles. The screen with the overgrown ball-spewer (I think it's the second screen of the area) is, in my opinion, one of the best screens I've ever produced.
I think Level 2 looked great too; the very detailed background, with the greyish vegetation, was a good contrast with the featureless foreground, which gave more of a feel of desolation and abandonment than I personally could have achieved with detail.
Those two are my personal favourite levels in terms of graphics alone. My very favourite area was the place between Levels 6 and 5, with the atmosphere and very... delicate story-telling.

As for the chaser area, I originally paced it very tensely. Then, just before I sent it to be tested, I challenged myself to play through it and pause for about 1 second as I entered each screen. I had to move a lot of enemies to do it. :P Lesson learnt!

Good to read your thoughts on different areas Talps.  Yeah, Level 3 is my fav.

A fantastic level. Just wanted to drop by and say I finally played through this and loved it. I wonder if a sequel is in the works with the ending that was given. A fantastic level all around. :)

Thanks :D
Glad you enjoyed it. The sequel to this is one of three projects I'm considering working on when I finish 'Dragon Myth'.

Just wanted to say that I completed this level recently and it was, indeed, awesome. Lots of custom stuff, interesting mechanics, very polished level design, animated cutscenes, a very good plot and a well balanced challenge (not easy, but not too hard, just enough to keep you coming back to retry after a failure). I don't think you can ask for much more in a KS level :)

@Vegetal Gibber, I pointed the same thing out during the betatest, except that I actually got stuck there due to a solid pixel, so I naturally assumed I couldn't go up there and was wandering around for a long time too. That mistake got fixed and Talps told me he didn't want it to be that obvious.

Actually when I was designing that area I deliberately put the lift at the bottom of the level and put in all the screens above it where you could see the lift shaft, in the hope that this would show the player where the exit was; unfortunately I think a lot of people didn't notice it, even though it runs up one side of the screen taking up a lot of space - human psychology working against me, perhaps. My idea was good but the execution not so much; I couldn't think of a way to make it more eye-grabbing.

Also, in an ideal world the lift at the bottom would have been a wreck, leaving the bottom of the shaft more open and again, making more of a distinction from the norm to draw the player's eye, but I couldn't draw a ruined lift to my satisfaction.

Glad you enjoyed the level anyway! :D

I was making a very short list of essential levels for a newcomer to KS. I included this level, obviously. Then, I noticed it wasn't on the knyttlevels archive. Sometimes, when a level I really enjoy isn't there, I upload the best version of it I can find. But since Talps is still somewhat active in the community, I thought I should request its upload with a post here. Just in case he felt any small changes were needed before posterity.

Thanks for including me! <3

I wasn't able to upload IDotS to the archive when I finished it; for some reason whenever I tried it would stop working just before the upload completed; my best guess was that my laptop couldn't handle it. I don't mind it being uploaded there now. My bid to update Eurydice turned into a project for an entire remake that I never completed; I think something similar would happen if I tried to work on this again.

Okay, it's up. Thanks, Talps. I still have hope for that Eurydice remake someday. C)

I've actually turned the Eurydice remake's plot into a novella. It's not quite finished yet but if I ever publish it I'll make sure to announce as much here if the forum is still active. You guys certainly deserve thanks for its existence.

Really late reply, but wow, this is fantastic, Talps!

I recently began feeling nostalgic and started looking around the old forums here. Glad I did! Loved the story and atmosphere, even with (mostly) standard KS music.

Kinda makes me want to get back into making KS levels, but...ah, this place seems pretty dead unfortunately. I might, I might not, I dunno.

Still, glad to see stuff like this. :)

Hey, I'm really glad you enjoyed!

I was feeling like the forum was nearly dead a short while ago but a few recent releases have brought people out of hiding, so there's a little hope!

Maybe a KS revival will be one of the positive outcomes of covid-19. :P
