Title: Dark Sea 2 [Challenge][Large][Lunatic-ish]
Post by: SecretGlitch on May 18, 2012, 01:47:07
(http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a287/kintobar/DS2t.png)

First off, it's done! Finally. I must apologize, this could have been released nearly a year sooner, but things like laziness, college, and other projects had gotten in the way. For four months it was sitting around in 99% completion, and only 2 days more work finished the job. I also apologize to the fans of Dark Sea 1 who may be alienated by the increased difficulty of the sequel.

Nonetheless, here's another adventure that Juni goes deep within, this time to the bottom of the sea and below to stop Professor Nuance's giant drill which would cause a tsunami if activated. Dark Sea 2 expands much much more than the first one, filled with custom tilesets, music, and custom objects. It's a long and packed challenge, taking well over an hour for a very skilled player and much much longer if not, so I recommend playing this over several sittings. I hate to call it Lunatic, as it doesn't feel like one to me, but it's got some super difficult areas so I'll reluctantly label it as such (with an -ish).

If you want to use tilesets/musics/custom objects from this level, feel free to ask me and give credit when used.

YES! IT'S FINALLY DONE!

Playing this now... and Done!

I thank you for making this good level! I am glad to see it was finally finished!

I made an updated version with the few minor fixes mentioned in the thread. If you have the older version, don't feel the need to download the updated one as for the most part it should still play right.

Thanks to all the kind words mentioned, by the way.

You need to do something else nearby to make the jump in that room possible.

Wow.

This is the hardest KS level I have ever played!

Normally that would be a big negative to me, but I can plainly tell that this level was made using big buckets of love as its primary ingredient.  I'm not sure if I will ever finish this level without cheating, but Kudos!

By the way, I am stuck in this room.

Any hints?

This level sure is a challenge but scarily enough I have tougher offerings. *cough*Safety*cough*

That room in particular is also quite hard.

Gorgeous level! Your ability to turn challenges into puzzles is just as impressive here as it was in Industrial Trap (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=2949.0). The difficulty is certainly too high for me, but I kept at it because the challenges required skill rather than luck, and mostly because it was so beautiful. *gives a star*

Wow.  Finally beat this sucker!
I don't think I've ever felt more accomplished finishing a knytt stories level.
Very original traps in this thing, too.  Things I never would have thought of!

Excellent level, but definitely not for the amateur.

Yeah! It's well worth the wait. :) I've started from the beginning and went 1:46 into it so far. Considering I already finished the demo before, 1 hour is definitely an underestimation :) I also feel like it's Lunatic-ish, with -ish, so far.

Post by: SecretGlitch on May 20, 2012, 23:18:49
It takes me somewhere around 80-90 minutes most of the time to beat this. Good job on beating it, Fubaka!

It took me about 3:20 overall to beat it. Lunatic, without -ish.
Edit: 3:40 actually.

@ Ortoslon: I was looking forward to your video of this, but I guess even SecretGlitch's 80 minutes is too long. If I made a video of this it would mostly be Juni dying thousands of time. No one will watch 6 hours of that.

I've miscalculated play time a bit. It's more like 3:40 on the rightmost route of the last part of the level.
I've tried the easy (leftmost) route. You can subtract almost an hour (more than 30 mins for sure) if you go that way.
Edit: Always choosing the middle path took a little more time than the left path. This one is my favorite.

The art is absolutely fantastic in its simplicity. I love it. However, I'm platformer-handicapped and barely made it past the first place the submarine docks. I did look through the whole level through the editor (I don't know if this is considered poor form, but I do this all the time) loading spots that looked interesting and going forward until the lunatic got me. But still, beautiful and elegant in design.

I also really like the selection part at the end with the gallery like the Mario 64 castle.

I've got somebody who's potentially making a heavily edited play-through of this level. I might do it myself if he doesn't.

Thanks! That level select was the result of me being at the end of the project and realizing that I didn't use that particular tileset, so I threw it in since the level was long enough to deserve one.

Yes, that gallery is a very good decision.

Edit: Done the 4th path. Even this one took at least 20 minutes less than the one I was calling "rightmost" before.

I had been hoping to post a review after completing this, but first I had to play Dark Sea 1 (which itself is above my skill level, and took me hundreds of deaths to complete), and now I realize that Dark Sea 2 is even harder, so I can't promise I ever will finish. Granted, this DS1 was the first Knytt Stories level I've played for months, so I'm probably a bit rusty, but I'm in over my head, for sure.

All of the custom content is fantastic. The tilesets are completely professional, and the music does a great job in setting the mood. The save point placement is perfect for me - I never complete some insane challenge only to die right before I get to the save point. Challenges are always creative, and I've only had to refer to a Let's Play twice in order to get a solution. A good combination of physical skill and mental solving. Parts are frustrating, but I should expect that from a lunatic(-ish) level.

Here's hoping I make it through to the end (if I do, I'll add an update to my review)

Good luck and thanks! Don't feel too bad if you have to resort to cheating or going in the level editor. This level was made with my personal skill level in mind, which happens to be much too hard for most people. Dark Sea 1 was similar, but since I was much worse at KS years ago, it happened to be a much more accessible level.

I must echo the praise you've already received, and I think I've only just begun the level. Gloomy atmosphere, brilliant design, and clear attention to detail make for an unforgettable story. I do wish the music looped to keep me from going mad while I try each screen over and over -- nothing toggling the sound off and on doesn't fix though.

I've been working my way through the level a few screens at a time as my patience allows, but I'm afraid I have gotten myself stuck and have been spending far too much time trying to find the way to proceed, so I would very much appreciate your guidance. :)

Just finished this playing level for the competition and I've gotta say, HOLY CRAP was this difficult. I had to add a few save points (all but one to the end sequence) to keep myself sane! After I finished, and you get to the room where it says, "If you would like to replay any level..." I was thinking to myself, "Who in their right mind would want to go through that torture again?!!?"

Ah, I kid! It was a GREAT level. The art/atmosphere was simple yet extremely effective and appropriate to the story. The story was a little bland but the setting/atmosphere more than made up for it. Obviously it was VERY challenging but unlike other levels, I never once thought it was unfair or "random." Every time I died it felt like my fault, although I did use SecretGlitch's name in vain once or twice. There were many unique, new, clever puzzles and new twists on what I thought were tired and old enemies. For instance, I was very impressed with the underground ant tunnel... I didn't think anyone could use the ant in a new way. I think my favorite challenge was the loopy-screens with the lasers and umbrella. My least favorite was definitely the oil complex, if only because the Umbrella-Screen jump was so difficult that I had to come to the forum to make sure that's what I actually had to do. Also, who puts the Refuel Switch on the other side of two miles of death lasers? I think I see now what caused the BP oil spill. (But hey, that's every video game ever, right?  ;) )

Anyways, my hat is off to you, SecretGlitch. Have a star for making two of my new favorite levels (Also played Dark Sea 1 to get the backstory), even if I never have the balls to play them again.

Good work getting through it! Thanks for playing. Also, if you manually went in and put save points, I'd suggest using KS+ as it has a save-anywhere feature in cheat mode. Though hopefully you wouldn't need to use said feature this point forward.

I finally beat this epic level - although admittedly I took the easiest final path (I do plan to go back and try the harder paths at some point). I had to add extra saves points between challenges to reduce tedium, but I did manage to beat all the challenges on the path I took. I really like that the challenges often do not just require precision, but also some thinking ahead.  :)

I did record my progress. Because each challenge generally took a while, I only started recording my attempts on a screen once I felt I was close to completing the screen. Most challenges have about 1-2 minutes of attempts recorded before the successful attempt.

If I were to post this (to YouTube), would people prefer the inclusion of these failed attempts? Or should I just stitch together the successful attempts? (If failed attempts are included, I'm estimating the total video will be about 2 hrs long, but I could split that over several episodes). Also, the commentary is pretty fragmented since I start and stop recording every couple minutes – would recording new commentary on top make sense?

Any suggestions are appreciated – and thanks again for this amazing level!!  :)

For me, my attention is held best by good commentary and good narrative. Dying once or twice to illustrate a point is fine... any more and it's just tedious for the viewer.

Wow, thanks for making a playthrough dude! :hiddenstar: I wanted to make a scenic edited playthrough a long time ago that featured the music but getting the footage and editing the audio to be seamless was a little to great of a task for me. Good job with this, though!
