Title: Name that tune!
Post by: SiamJai on May 06, 2012, 14:01:56
Some of you might remember a little game we had on the old forums, where I played and recorded a bunch of videogame tunes, and you guys had to name the song and the game it's from. It was quite fun, so here we go again!  :)

This time the recordings are mostly videos in addition to mp3, and I've got quite a few new songs up my sleeve, along with the tunes from the good old days.

Rules are simple:

The format of the description is up to you, and here is a rule of thumb: if someone who has never played the game can find the tune just by your description, then it's accurate (ie. "Super Mario 64 wing cap theme" or "the song that plays in Super Mario 64 when Mario has the flying hat", rather than "Mario 64 song"). Follow the links below and good luck!  C)

The tunes
#01: Song of Storms (Ocarina of Time) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsUnDkDTT8o)
#02: Remplissage Momentané (Knytt Stories) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SzSgrEJXS0)

Isn't the first one the Song of Storms from Ocarina of Time?
Title: Re: Name that tune!
Post by: sergiocornaga on May 06, 2012, 14:32:52
Nice idea! Hope you'll put up many, many more videos.

Song 01 is definitely Song of Storms, and song 02 is Remplissage momentané by Nurykabe (from Knytt Stories). Song 03 I've never heard.
Title: Re: Name that tune!
Post by: SiamJai on May 07, 2012, 07:02:24
That was quick! :O And correct too: the first one is Song of Storms from OoT and the second one is Nurykabe's Remplissage momentané from KS. Great job, both of you! ^_^

Added #4 and #5 to the list, feel free to have a go at them too.

Nice idea! Hope you'll put up many, many more videos.
Thanks, I hope so too! That's why I try to keep everything as simple as possible this time: minimal retakes and no fancy editing, just what you'd hear live if you were sitting in the same room. :)

I'm having trouble placing #3 too, and #4 and #5 are complete mysteries as well. #5 sounds familiar though, almost like it's a reused folk tune, or something.

I bet almost everybody recognizes the first two and almost nobody recognizes the last three...

I'm almost sure I know number 3, kinda reminds me of the newer Pokémon games, but I'm probably wrong.

Nice guesswork, but it looks like we need to brush up on popular console titles from the PS1/N64-era and on 'tough indie RPGs'. :P

To keep the ball rolling, #6 is out and it should be an easy one. I'll also have stuff from more recent games soon. :-)
Title: Re: Name that tune!

I think #6 it's from the clock town in "The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask".
Title: Re: Name that tune!
Post by: BloxMaster on May 24, 2012, 08:57:31
#6 Is the second day in the clock town, from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Technically Firecat got this, but each day has a different song.

#3 is Goomba Village from Paper Mario.

Technically, it's meant to be the intro/Day1 version, but otherwise both of you are correct, and Firecat's description is accurate according to Youtube. Sorry Blox! :) (The difference is mostly in the pace of the tune, as it gets faster and faster each day. There is a video that compares all three, like so: Day1 (http://youtu.be/K0kXVfqPrLs?t=17s), Day2 (http://youtu.be/K0kXVfqPrLs?t=1m30s), Day3 (http://youtu.be/K0kXVfqPrLs?t=2m37s). But I know, it's hard to compare when there is only one.)

#3 is Goomba Village from Paper Mario.
So very close! :D ...but not right. :(

With some technical difficulties out of the way, more videos are... on the way.  8)

I listened to Goomba Village and it was clearly the same style, so I went through the Paper Mario OST until I found the track.

Correction: #3 is Koopa Village from Paper Mario.

No, why would he? your description wasn't accurate enough to get to the right song, but SiamJai was kind enough to hint that you were on the right track. Next time check before suggesting. :)

That's very kind of you Sergio, and part of me wants to do that, recognizing the effort both of you had in coming up with the right answer. But if I did, I'd have to split points every time more than one person had a role in guessing a song, and that'd quickly lead to confusion. So I can accept only one answer, the one that passed the rule of thumb, and that's yours. :)

Sorry bumper, you were this close! But no worries, there'll be more songs from that era, and if your name indicates what I think it does, you'll have an easy time getting 'em right! C)

Added #7 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMdSNFbyDSc) and #8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZtKm3TNnt4) to the list yesterday. Both come from more recent games than any of the solved ones 'till now. Good luck! :)

I'm thinking that #8 is the Final Fantasy X theme/intro. Which is epic by the way, thanks for playing it. ;)

Will a virtual pat on your back suffice? C)p Would've gotten more if your answer passed the rule of thumb, but any random person unfamiliar with the game would not find the tune by that description alone, so... :P

But Knytt Stories came out six years after Final Fantasy X.

Thanks! Just chalk that up to senility...XD

You're welcome, I'm glad you like it. ^_^ And YT says that the title's correct, so up on the list you go!

Ooh, number 7 is the rainy day theme from the original Animal Crossing!

Yes, it totally is!!! ^_^

I remember, you got some of the most obscure ones in the last forumgame too. Glad you're playing again - I'm counting on you, Gorf! ;)

Edit:
Well, you guys are getting 'em so fast, I can hardly keep up! But #9 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adc2y69V1Wo) and #10 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOGw8KSZnDI) are already up for grabs. Whew! We've reached double digits now, which could be a sign that the game isn't a total failure. Let's see how far we can go!  C)

Looks like I lucked out getting here first. 10 is Great Fairy's Fountain from the Legend of Zelda series.

If it goes too fast for you, I can look into providing a few too. I can play some game music on my keyboard as well and also record it to youtube. :)

Feel free to update the OP video links and player scores. :)

Are we gonna get some clues or maybe new tunes?
Title: Re: Name that tune!
Post by: SiamJai on June 17, 2012, 06:38:29
I planned to go to a piano practice room and record a bunch yesterday, but couldn't make it. I'll get some on the keyboard soon instead, once I manage to stop the neighbors from banging on the wall and threatening with the police. XD

Clues:
#4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMr_3cLHpmo): the game appeared on the earlier Nifflas forum.
#5 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzOLX57xW2s): 'Last Imagination'
#9 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adc2y69V1Wo): 'grabseed'

Edit: Recorded a bunch now. Uploading...

Edit: Uploaded three more for now, they're as follows:

#11 is the first movement of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. One example of its usage in a game is in The Villi People level of Earthworm Jim 2.

#12 is the theme / menu music of Angry Birds.

I'm not sure what #13 is, but your performance of it is quite impressive!

Great work, Sergio! Both are accurate and correct descriptions, getting you two more points. :)

Yeah, I realize this early-bird-thingie creates quite an unbalance. There are a couple things we can do about it. On my part, I'll release new videos more evenly throughout the day (eg. instead of three new ones at once, I'll do one-by-one maybe a few hours apart). On your part, enabling notifications on this topic might be useful. Here is how to do it (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=5409).

Oh, and a new tune, #14 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8yQYMTD078), is out now. Good luck! :)

Yep, the one and only! Funny though, when I checked your answer on Youtube and watched the first video, I realized that the original GMP tune plays slightly differently than what I played from memory... oh well!

Good going Gorf, welcome to the second place on the highscore list! :)

You've also unlocked #15 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5viclLufsc), for the lucky person who gets here and recognizes the popular tune first.

This time I don't hate you because I wouldn't know that one anyway.
This is what I get for being so stubborn about the Final Fantasy series!

Hey think it would be possible for me to submit a really bad cover using this (http://www.google.com/doodles/robert-moogs-78th-birthday)? (only works on Google Chrome)
I can't play any instruments and never actually did anything musical, so I'd be just playing a very basic melody by memory in hopes someone would recognize it.

I love that thing, so I approve of the idea. Hopefully SiamJai will too. Also, that Chrome remark's not strictly true, it's worked on every version of Firefox I've tried it on.

Oh, sorry about that. Didn't work on my Firefox so thought it was the case (I was also pretty sure I remembered reading somewhere that it only worked on Chrome, must have been something else).

Yes, it's Prelude from Final Fantasy. For the real thing, check out this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-ypqrEu6z8) of all the different versions of this theme throughout the games. Nice trip down memory lane.

Sure, let's give it a try and see how it goes! Send me a PM with the title and link to the tune you've made, and I'll put it up. (A similar fun music webtoy is the Les Paul guitar (http://www.google.com/doodles/les-pauls-96th-birthday), I've made quite a few simple tunes with it back then.)

Speaking of simplicity, #17 is out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xg1l18udOk0).

I think it just might. :)

Glad it was still recognizable though, since I didn't play it note-by-note, just improvised from what I remembered it sounded like. Good job!

20 is almost here; though I have a couple extra recordings lined up, I want to come up with something special for this nice round number. Let's see.

Why, yes it is! Congrats NESGamer, you're on the scoreboard. :)

What a year it was, last year! In just two months you guys got down nearly 20 tunes, so here is hoping that we'll continue at least at that rate this year.

A few things have been changed. First, I got some new tech recently, so the recordings will be clearer - at least audio-wise. Compare this re-take (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TXmLZplots) of Mystery Song #9 with the original (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adc2y69V1Wo).

Another new thing this year is the occasional appearance of mp3s, in addition to videos. This way I can record more spontaneously, which means more songs for you guys to figure.

Let's start with such a tune. I've recorded this one just today, while a virus-scan gave my laptop a virtual colonoscopy. At first I was just goofing off with the keys, but then it became so funny I just had to make a recording of it. Hopefully the original tune is still recognizable. :P

I racked my brain trying to remember what #9 was, because I have heard that song before.

Song #9 is the song that plays when you enter Nabnut's house in Click Clock Wood during the summer, from Banjo Kazooie.
