Title: Help: One photograph to end all level design
Post by: Nifflas on July 23, 2011, 00:27:17
In one and a half day's quota (15 rooms), the entire game world of 1440 rooms will be complete, after which I'll dig into story, quests, music, and sound. This will take at least one more year, because my largest most beautiful game world need other content that can match its quality.

However, to finish that one last room, I need a photograph of a snake skull taken from the side. If you can capture this photograph for me, and allow me to use it for the game, I'll give you a free copy of Saira and also KnyttWaDF when it's finished, and of course a credit in KnyttWaDF.

Yeah, I can't help you here...

All these chances for a free game missed... Guess I'll have to buy it with my $0.00.

I help run a charity shop and we get all manner of the weird and wonderful; I'll keep an eye out for one.

I think I need to hurry up, so only attaching it.
It's...strange and...bit too blurry...dunno XD!

I need a photograph of a snake skull taken from the side
Not sure if this qualifies as taken from the side though.

*Sigh*
This was the best model I found...
And of course I was a little bit inattentive, didn't notice that sentence.

Thanks for submitting it, but sorry, it doesn't quite qualify. It's a two dimensional game so all pictures must be taken from the perfect side so they can be used in a two dimensional environment.

If is it a good quality, I can make another! (REALLY HOPE)

It's a bit blurry and too bright. It needs to be crisp, it should probably not be directly modelled after an image owned by someone else either, just to be sure there will be no problems about copyrights.

This one looks...better!
It is slightly different: different teeth, coulours and lighting. Also, the teeth is sharper.
It is somewhere more yellow, darker. Slightly different shape.

Thing is, it's too similar to this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/swamper/4135296604/). I don't want to end up in legal problems. It can't be based directly on an existing image.

OK, giving up...

 :D
I am not sore/annoyed!
I really understand your thing, but I see that my next efforts would be useless.
So, my efforts lead in the dead-end, like those.

But: much thanks for appreciation!

Here's a site where you could order one online, if it comes down to that:

Why didn't you tell me this a week earlier?
I found the skeleton of the pathetic European Grass Snake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grass_Snake), but since "Grass Snakes are harmless and protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981; It is an offence to possess any part of them, living or dead" I had to throw it away D:

Not sure if I have what you're looking for, but I'll try.

Ooh, nice! Is it your own picture? If you hold the copyright I'll need a license from you to use it. I'll send a PM to you about this.

Glad ya like it. Sent you the FullHD version. It's my own picture.

I have no snake and didn't want to wait till my neighbors snake had deceased. ;)
So I spent some time today modelling the skull. It's basically a 3d-render and not a real photograph.
Hope you don't mind. Would be cool if it somehow manages to get into the final game if the style fits.   :)

Consider it a really good compliment that Nifflas didn't notice it was a 3C render :P
You can actually notice it in the shadows, but with a render this good you could have a lot more freedom, with the lightning and stuff, without editing in a 2D editor, witch would take away a lot of the quality and precision.
Excellent job ;)

I was reading that and thinking... "No way, the freak killed his neighbors' snake..."

It's greatly appreciated! Thank you a lot for this!

Tonight I will finish the game's level design. Then, I'll move to implementing scripting for quests.

I was looking at the image and thought, can this be a render? No way. Way too much detail in the image.

Good job :)

All level design is done now! <3

It's quite a nice transistion adding a snake skull to the game world last. The next step is actually to learn Python so I can implement the scripting.

Thank ya all for appreciating my work :^^:
I was a lurker, lurking around the forums for months when the words 'free copy of Saira'
forced me to open blender and finally register at this forum.
Selfish me, I kno'  Can't hide it.

Now bury that snake, let's move on to python  <3

Did you completely model it in blender?
If so, good work, it looks like something you would make in sculptris, I personally find the sculpting in blender a bit haphazard...

I havent been here in ages, (been on blenderartists instead  :^^:) now I hear there is python scripting in the new game?? Awesome. I just learnt python, for use in BGE, but now ill be able to use it in this game for scripting!

I am learning Python right now, seems pretty simple. I really hope we will be able to easily edit the script on the level editor :)

@smeagle
Blender was just for micro clean up and rendering. I use it daily, but I wouldn't even dare touching it for sculpting.
I usually use 3dCoat for sculpting/painting organic models and blender for game rigging/animation finetuning.
Because I don't bother with highpoly rendering nowadays, I guess blender is enough for my usual lowpoly needs :-)

So, now it goes offtopic, oops. I should stop here :shifty:

Haha, there's no possible on-topic since the request is already fixed and in the game! I don't mind if you talk about what 3D software that you used for the model or use for various other things. I find it very interesting, at some point I need to learn a 3D modeller for my isometric game I want to create sometime in the future (though not before KnyttWaDF is done).
