Title: [Normal/Maze/Challenge] Explorarium - Updated
Post by: rainulous on July 16, 2011, 17:14:01
Update 4 June 2016 - Fixed some of the remaining glitches - replaced them with.... Uh, something. Somethin' Special. Download below.

Update 3 June 2016 - Remember when I said I was back? Well I am now, for real this time. And I updated my level. It's still not a great level, but at least I fixed the bugs. Looking back at it now... this level really had some problems.

Explorarium

---------------------------------
This is the first level I made, originally in 2011. Nearly 5 years later, I finally got around to updating it and fixing some of the bugs.
---------------------------------
Explorarium is a maze-like exploraration level created by Rainulous for the short time frame level competition. Its name comes from the words explore and vivarium, meaning explore life.
I consider it to be a normal level, but It may be hard. I will change its difficulty after getting some feedback. There may also be bugs, so please report any, if found.
Enjoy!

1.4 replaces two void screens/wallswims with... Something. Somthin' Special.

Hey, I like this so far.  I'm not quite done with this, but wanted to leave a comment now.  I haven't seen many levels that use the 'overworld,' and you have a nice use of the return later with the right powerup style of level.  Nice use of the photorealistic grass as well.  The visuals are good, but fairly predictable: nothing very new here.  You do, however, have several purple screens, one if you climb the outside of the castle area as you first come in, and a second in the desert area if, once you get the jump power up, you go one screen back and climb up.

Oh crap. I never remembered to fix those!!! And I know some things are predictable, It was my first level and did not have very much time to make it.

I'm fixing those now... and will release another update.

This was a fun little level, it still has a few flaws though:

Mistakes aside, I had fun with the level.

Thanks for finding those... I left some in because I was going to have more secrets but ran out of time. Then I forgot about them.

reminds me very much of Gustav's daughter level by nifflas.
it gets very tedious running back and forth between every place so many times.
the cave was my favorite place, it wasn't as bland as the others but at the purple key screen there is void if you go down the hole (how on earth could you miss that?)
Sorry but the horrible gameplay ruined this level for me.

I was in a hurry... it was for a short-time frame competition. There were some things I forgot to finish.

And some shift issues with the pinewood heights shift don't occur for me, on both of my computers so I don't know what to do there.

I'm working on this again. Hopefully getting rid of all the bugs.
I've also started a new level with some more interesting mechanics in it, unlike this level which is almost the same as any other level.

Your level holds some promise, but, as I'm sure you are already aware, there are numerous problems, not the least of which is the massive void hole in the area with the purple key.

One thing I would suggest is to add unique music to your level.  To be honest, there is no greater way to make people remember your adventure over the piles of standard levels than to add custom music, even if the tilesets are still standard.

I still plan to update this level and fix it, but I haven't had the time to as of now.
Custom music is something I plan to add in my next level.

I'm back - again. Hopefully for real this time. And I fixed up some of the glitches in my level, changed some graphics, etc. Added a room I somehow completely forgot. Yikes.
In other news, working on new levels and KS related projects.

Hey, welcome back!

Thanks for fixing up this level, it was enjoyable to play... a real throwback to the "classic Knytt" levels of old! I enjoyed the use of the overworld, the running back and forth, and the relative straightforward nature of the level. I hope you stay around and make some more levels. In the mean time, feel free to play some of the great ones some of us had made recently.

Spoiler: Bad things (click to show/hide)

Anyways, thanks again for making this. Looking forward to more from you!

Thanks pfrangip.
I knew I had missed some things, so I'll probably fix those soon. They're not completely gamebreaking like some of the other glitches were. I'm glad you liked it though!

Edit: Fixed - replaced them with something special. You can still get to those areas, they just aren't glitches anymore.

Edited again - 1.4 was bad luck. Something about 4 and death. Insert joke here. Updated 1.5. It works now.

Hm, alright. I'm considering adding more to the desert area, but I still don't think there will be a reason to come back there after getting the power-up. I fixed the area with the purple key and the blue key, but I'm going to see if there's any other issues to fix before uploading it.

I have missed this level when it first came out, and played the 1.5 version. It was a lot of fun! Backtracking got a little tedious towards the end, but I still enjoyed everything. Haven't seen that many Knytt references in a while. I loved the idea of the desert maze, too. It was a bit shocking to me that someone else found the earth tileset+grass tileset combination useful, since I thought I was the only one, in Corridors (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=2832) and in Nightmare World (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=5623.0). I just found the combination to be very beautiful, but didn't think anyone else would do so. Have you seen those levels, or did you come up with the idea yourself?

Bugs: I somehow fell into a void when falling to Pinewood Heights, but that may have been due to me moving around rather frantically. I also noticed a solid block in the tower in that area, which can be hit from below, resulting in a wallswim - granted, it's not that easy, but still very much possible.

A few bits of level design criticism:

It would be great to see another level from you. This one felt really good to play!
