Title: Petals of a Dying Flower [KS+][Challenge/Scenic/Medium]
Post by: Talps on March 31, 2011, 12:30:57
The website that's been eating all my time recently is down today, so I finally found time to add the finishing touches to my newest level,

Petals of a Dying Flower v1.1. (http://knyttlevels.com/levels/Talps%20-%20Petals%20of%20a%20Dying%20Flower1.1.knytt.bin)

Thanks to my slowly learning to be good at this level design lark, the difficulty for this level is less suspect than my previous (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=4271.0) two levels (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=3556.0) (which are worth playing anyway!).
It's artistic, and whatever plot there is I can't describe without ruining it, which isn't to say there isn't a plot: you get to work it out for yourself.

There is one screenshot below, but to see more, all you have to do is click on the download link and wait! :P

Best played in fullscreen mode.

UPDATE

After more than a few years, Petals of a Dying Flower has been updated!

Please note that the level is now KS+ exclusive.

EDIT: i'd be glad if you made a version of the level without copyrighted music, right now that video is blocked in germany

typo: the correct link for "October Air" is http://ccmixter.org/files/nhomas/17056

if i'll find enough other good new levels and get around to write another TIGSource post about KS levels, i'll include this one

I think I'll get on and do the whole village opening section soon.

The copyrighted song is only the first half of the song, which as it was freely available online as a sample, i thought I'd be ok to use.

Sweet! Best new level in a long time. Just enough challenge to make it fun but not too impossible at all. Thanks!

Wow.  That was a really fun level.  It makes me happy that amazing levels like this are still being created.

i've reuploaded the video without sound because i don't want to jeopardize my channel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4kV1GjlRE8

Talps, i'll send you the original clip so that you could host it yourself

Don't have a youtube account (at least one I use) so don't worry about it. Thanks anyway. You could edit the level file to remove the track and record it again; sorry that it's a problem for you.

Also, thanks everyone! I'm really glad this is going down so well!

This is still one of my favourite Knytt Stories levels. I like the intro screen modifications. I'm a little disappointed you decided not to use my Tileset7 edit since it fixed so many little collision issues, but it's not something you asked me to do and it's ultimately your choice to make.

I've uploaded it here for anyone wanting to try it out.

Sorry, I just really didn't like the pointiness of the 10th-11th tiles from the left.

very nice level.

I think the level should have ended after the forest part. it just seemed like a good way to end it with the hard way there. like the calm after the storm. it feelt like an ending with the nice piano music and when you could see the light instead you go into yet another place, which also seemed like the least thoughtful place in the level. however it's a great level and that's a minor complaint.

Terrific level! Certainly the best in a long time. However, I'm with Salmoneus on the forest part - I thought it was a perfect way to end the level, and was actually a bit disappointed to discover yet another section of caves...  O_o Otherwise, very enjoyable and very beautiful, thank you for making this  :)

I'm curious now! About what the others are saying... it seems like you added something at the end... hmmm.  I'll play it through again, because anyway, it was very enjoyable the first time  C)

Played it again. As good as when I tested it :) I didn't see a "forest"... depends of how you see things, but to me you're always in caves,

I'll put one together when you finish the river.

In other news, thanks everyone for the feedback. I personally would not have been happy to end it at the garden area; for me it wouldn't have been satisfying. However, I agree that I should have put a bit more into the tilesets for the final area; I was low on ideas and motivation was slowly draining away, but it would have been good if I'd done something new for the area. Maybe given it a Victorian Industry feel, to match the wheels. i say it about all my levels, but maybe I'll go back and redo it some time (unless people think it was good as it was).

I just finished playing this, and I know it's a month-long bump, but this is still on the first page, and hey, it's never too late for positive feedback. I liked the level a lot; it's definitely one of my favorites. It has that dark edge that I always love in KS levels, like you're seeing things through a lens that's somehow changing the image before it gets to you.

I JUST got finished playing, "Petals of a Dying Flower."

..........WOW.

I mean really, dude.

You make such profound games on a metaphysical, mood level.

and so intricately and well-designed. I mean...wow!

It's like the difference between a professional designer and some hobbyist who JUST discovered knytt playing some of your games and some of the others I've played since discovering knytt stories for myself.

You and egomassive and a few others are like light years ahead when it comes to sound and fun game design. And you always have a story/theme/philosophy behind your episodes. I found myself really moved by this particular level. I don't know.  Maybe it was seeing this character I'm so familiar with - Juni silhouetted the whole time - in this dark cavern fighting her way to the top/light.

Great job.

I have played for about 5 minutes or so, and I just realized in that short time... how bad I am at KS.  XD But, still, In those 5 minutes, I realized that this map was beautiful.  C) And by the way, the map is not really small, I'd say it's medium in size.

So I don't usually post my LP's anywhere, I'm bad at self-promotion. But this one I felt like I should share.
I've been doing what I call the "Talps-a-thon" for a bit where I play through a bunch of Talps' levels. Early on I asked Talps if he wanted to join in on a level to talk about it, and he chose this one.

It was a very interesting and fun experiment and I think it turned out rather well!

T'was my pleasure. Other topics of conversation in the video include some thoughts about 'Dragon Myth'.

Just watched the video and was surprised to find two of the music tracks have been changed in the version Bulba s playing. I wonder who did that and how Bulba got an edited version.

I figured I might have to change the music and went ahead and did it as an experiment to see how easy it would be. I was going to switch it back before the LP but I later forgot about it. I at least tried to match the mood when I did it, so hopefully it doesn't take too much away from it.

Already posted a comment on the video but this was really cool to watch. I have to say this is probably my second favourite Talps level (after IDoTS of course). So it was really great to hear some of Talps' comments. I definitely recommend checking it out, everyone.

Watching video now - interesting to see and hear one of the great KS levels narrated by one of the great level makers and the one who actually made it! Cool. and turns out Talps has a british accent...perfect.

Well to be fair, I'm conducting an interview at the same time and I'm trying to find things in the level to talk about. I'm not always this bad :p

I'm happy you enjoyed it anyway :)

For future reference, I'm English and (currently) 26. My accent tends to go all posh when I'm being recorded.  :/
And as it happens, I'm mispronouncing 'Eurydice'. But doing it right is pretty hard... (remember to click the 'listen' button on the Greek side.) (https://translate.google.co.uk/#en/el/Eurydice)

I don't dislike all secrets. Just when a game heavily relies on them I have no patience for it. If I can enjoy and finish a game without searching every corner I'm happy.
And respect to Bulba for carrying a conversation while playing the level! Conversing and playing aren't easy together! (Just don't watch his videos of himself playing 'Ευρυδίκη'.) I do genuinely regret making certain areas of my levels as difficult as they are; it's not just because I'm watching him struggle at times.

I'd kind of like to commentate more of my levels, though I fear it may be dull watching me playing through a level I made while talking about it. It works better as a conversation or a sort of interview.

I dunno, I always find developer commentary so exciting!  I'll definitely have a commentated playthrough of Deep Freeze when it's finally completed. :P

I watched the commentary video recently and would also like to see more commentary content either by yourself or with another player (I think Bulbapack asks some good questions). It really gives us the underlying process that goes into making a Knytt Stories level and we do not seem to get many videos like this.

I definitely agree with this. More commentary on levels would be cool, regardless of whose level it is. Also, I watched it again. X)

Really late to the party, but I wanted to give props to Talps for making this level (love the atmosphere the dark/minimalist tileset and sprites manage to convey!) and to both bulbapuck and Talps for making the LP/commentary video. It was a very interesting watch, hope you do another one of these videos in the future :D

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the comments.

I've been out of level-design mode since the summer but I will get back to Dragon Myth at some point! I've managed to shed a few responsibilities recently and getting more used to my new job; I've been feeling more creative recently so maybe I'll find a way to funnel that into KS.

Since Bulba has already played 'Dragon Myth' I was thinking of suggesting to him that I join him on his eventual Lets Play of that. Also, it'd be fun to do 'The Greying Tower'; I reckon I could find stuff to say about that.

Basically the changes were largely implemented in direct response to the feedback I'd received, like the final area being too bland and the third feeling like you'd made it outside. And all the trouble my stolen music was causing for YouTubers.
