Title: Terminal (A Hollywood Hacking forum game that I promise won't die)
Post by: Yukabacera on February 24, 2011, 10:54:28
Hey everyone! I'm making a comeback! And I really promise this one won't die because I've got the story laid out! Hurray!

This game is sort of a Hollywood Hacking (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HollywoodHacking) simulator! With 16-color ANSI displays! If you're into that sort of thing!

"What is my mission?", you ask? Well, I'll tell you all about your mission! Your mission is to hack into every computer and delete everything hack into a mainframe and extract a highly confidential document whose contents are unknown! To you, at least! I like exclamation marks!

But first, I want you to fill out this form so I know what kind of battlestation are you using!

MONITOR TYPE (MONOCHROME/COLOR):
FONT COLOR (IGNORE IF MONITOR IS COLOR) (AMBER/BLUE/WHITE/GREEN):
COLORS (IGNORE IF MONITOR IS MONOCHROME) (4/16) (IF YOU WANT, YOU CAN ALSO HAVE 2 COLORS (MONOCHROME)):
PREFFERED STORAGE MEDIUM (MAGNETIC TAPE/8-INCH FLOPPY DISK/5¼-INCH FLOPPY DISK/3½-INCH FLOPPY DISK):
OPERATING SYSTEM (MECHATEC INDUSTRIES TERMOS/TRYLLIAN TECHNOLOGIES AOOS/AYR INSTITUTE ARCOS (OBSOLETE)):

So just fill out that form, give us a couple of details about your character if you wish, and engage in some Rapid Fire Typing (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RapidFireTyping)!

I may take some time to update because I'm not at home, but don't worry, unlike in my last forum game, I will be punctual!

=I= (can't find the pipe on this computer)

Are these real information, or fake?

Real, as in real info about your computer? Naaaah, it's for your ingame terminal thingy that you use for hacking.

(Is this what you meant to ask?)

Yes.

Color
--
4 bits/16 color
Magnetic Tape.. I guess
Umm... Tryllian Tech AOOS, I guess.

Ummm I have no clue what half of these are. For color thingie, can you clarify? Like what the color is for?

As for chracter:
Name = jetio4 (I guess)
Age = 14
Background = Nothing better to do, so became a hacker. Yeah.

Post by: Yukabacera on February 24, 2011, 17:10:11
Sure, I'll clarify.

COLORS is how many colors can your monitor display at the same time.

1 bit or 2 colors, default for monochrome monitors, optional for color ones (on a monochrome monitor, this image appears as black with the other color you picked. If you picked amber, it would be amber on black.)

2 bits or 4 colors (when actually using the command line, there is virtually no difference between 2 and 4 colors,  it's only noticeable on images)

4 bits or 16 colors

PREFERRED STORAGE MEDIUM is just for kicks.

OPERATING SYSTEM changes some of the commands and the appearance of your interface, as well as software you can use.

MONITOR TYPE should be pretty obvious.

For color, I'd go with 4 bits/16 colors. Changing now. Also, the 2 bits/4 colors actually looks cool with that picture :\

Monitor type:  Monochrome

The character himself
Hacker name:  Michael (Alias of 8-biter)
Age:  19
Background:  A mere playful hacker, prepared to make the world as low-tech as possible.
Quirk #1:  Loves ternary.  (See Iji)
Quirk #2:  Wants world to downgrade to most obsolete technology.  (See Background)

Was still typing when you posted. Can i still join?

My settings:

Monitor type: Color
Color: 2 bits, 4 colors
Storage medium:  Magnetic tape
Operating System: Mechatec Industries Termos

My character:
Name: Flytt Expiento (Alias for just the same ol' Matt Neyen. Different personality, though.)
Age: 15
Backstory: On the very day before the elections for class president, everyone was talking about voting the most popular kid in school. Flytt (Matt?) decided to put a keylogger on her computer and steal her SmartSchool account to make her 'break' one of the rules: Do not conduct your campaign through digital means. That's all. Since then, Flytt's been hacking anyone's account on any kind of network.
Quirk #1: Grey Hat hacker
Quirk #2: Will hack anything if paid for doing it.

If I read his message right, he writes that he hacked the most popular girl who's going to be class president. So "she" wouldn't be himself.

There's no specific way of entering commands, just tell me what you want to type in.

Also, about peripherals: you can purchase them online in a specialized shop.  All of you start with the MechaTec Industries DMP-800 dot-matrix printer and the MechaTec Industries MDU-2010 56k (8000 baud) dial-up modem. Each computer has 5 ports, but if you're willing to spend quite a bit, you can buy an expansion that adds 3 more ports. (not that you will need this.)

I realize how inconsistent and anachronistic all of this stuff is, but oh well...

You ask for answers, and answers I shall provide!

No, you can't change your colors. Perhaps you will be able to buy another monitor, though...

(Incredibly embarrassing map removed. I will draw a proper one some day.)

StraightFlame: I won't bother drawing a whole screen just to say "INVALID COMMAND".

jetio4:

I assume you wanted to dial (277) 227-6377?

Since I had big ideas for ANSI art for the BBS menu and I have to type in stuff for you, you won't see those, sorry...

Well for now, L.

Edit: Yukabacera, how did you make the pictures of the different color types for the moniter on page one? Like the example picures of 2 color, 4 color, 16 color things. I can see those on the school computers.

Jetio, I have no idea why you can see those and not the other ones. All of them are .pngs, and the ones demonstrating color depth are from Wikipedia.  :/

And yes, SF, you have to save up moneys to buy another monitor. You'll find a place to buy them soon enough...

And yes, jetio, you can use multiple commands at the same time, but only on the BBSes.

(That wasn't very subtle. Anyway, you've still got quite a bit of preparing to do before you go hax0rring.)

Yeah, about that...

It's kind of really hard to update Terminal because I have to screw around with colors and image sizes. I started and updated a good part of that game on Windows 7, and I'm doing this on XP. Don't worry though, I will update!

Just in case anyone's wondering why he hasn't been updating.

I have to break some bad news to you...

(no, I'm not going to abandon this one!)

I think I'll be switching to text for everyone instead of screens, because Paint is really screwing with me, I can't find the right colors and everything keeps erasing and resizing for no reason. Feel free to leave, I know I've disappointed you. I hope you'll still have fun, though! So, without further ado:

That didn't tell me anything...
Well I will hang up, dial 277-NUMBERS, and search by Category.

Isn't it awesome how I somehow instinctively know the exact commands list of a site I've never been to?

o.O!

I... search Aria Johnson, print the screen, press A, and print that out. Just cause, you never know if your computer is going to break and you need that file.
