Title: [Challenge / Hard] Ascension

Juni must find a place to pray.

It's short, but things get pretty tricky. I made the tilesets and the CO's. There are two endings. Hope you enjoy it, and let me know what you think.

I'll post the level in knyttlevels.com after it gets fixed up.

Very nice level. There are a number of things I specifically liked: I liked the tilesets, and the unity they gave to the level; I liked the subtle but effective deployment of custom objects; and

There wasn't much I didn't like. Having to go back through areas I'd already beaten was sorta irritating, but not really a problem. I didn't like the lack of any real setup; there's one intro screen showing the ultimate goal of the level, but then no explanation as to why Juni (or the player) wants to get there, and Juni just starts standing in the (apparent) middle of nowhere. I also didn't like the fact that the level is more or less totally lifeless- other than Juni, I didn't see any animals, which felt weird. (Maybe that was deliberate, though.)

Overall, a well above-average level, though.

Incidentally, it's possible to stand on the spikes without danger (see attachment). This is so close, though, that it'd be very hard to exploit.

glad you liked it.
i thought having to go back through areas even though you'd beaten them would be interesting, because the challenges on the way back through were slightly different. i also didn't want to make much of a story; you see the ultimate goal, and then it's up to you to figure it out, and the endings - i thought - revealed why she was looking for the particular places. also, no animals was intentional, but i might change that... and the spot with those spikes, i accidentally put them on layer 3 for a couple screens around there, but forgot to go back and change them.

Farik, I thought I pointed that out while beta testing.

EDIT: Ok. I think the ending was... less than ideal. The rest of the level was GREAT, though.

They do reveal why she was, but not why she should want to want to find it. 9_9 (I mean, it shows her motivation, but doesn't show why she has this particular motivation.)

Once you have the three keys, head back to the start and go left. If you don't have red, blue, and purple, keep going right.

I personally found all the jumping over spikes and whatnot a bit frustrating, especially with that few save points... :(

I really like the music though, created the atmosphere quite nicely, and the tileset wasn't to shabby either. :D

well, it can be frustrating, but it is supposed to be a hard level. a lot of the jumps and timing have to be perfect.

I loved the level. Thanks for making it! Everything worked so beautifully together, i.e. the music, the tilesets and the challenges. The world felt so very real. The ending was a bit of a letdown for me when I first saw it (well, I mean both endings), but then I thought that with the ruins, the lack of life, etc. the level looked like, I don't know, the beginning of afterlife? :oops: So it kind of made the ending logical and natural. I know, its a silly metaphor. *shrug*

Yes I have, but the problem was not with your level. My C: drive was full, so I had to remove a bunch of stuff, and move some things to my E: drive instead.

Excellent level, as expected Farik. More difficult than your usual stuff, but still just as atmospheric and visually pleasing. I like the way you've given us the bones of a story and left us to flesh it out with our imagination. Works really well, especially with the well chosen music!

Personally, I think it's fine - it should be calm and slow. If you had to add anything, maybe some form of cloud effect, but that'd have to be a CO and to make it follow Juni would be a bit shift-tricky.

This was a nice level, atmosphere-wise.
This is just hard, though? People have said my levels were hard and they weren't as hard as this!
Anyway, the music really gave it that feeling. I felt a few parts were rather frustrating--the jumping-over-the-tiles-with-the-spikes-on-top thing was kind of overdone I think, but overall it was nice I guess. Like googoogjoob said, there didn't seem to be much 'life' in the level. Only Juni and plants and maybe flickering dots were alive.
For that alternate ending, I totally used that 'wallswim' idea in Trimurti, although it seemed faster in this level for some reason.

I don't know what you guys are crying about. I beat this level without cheating; therefore, it can't be that bad. :D (I must have died at least 100 times, but still.)

My jumping skills certainly improved while playing. It was chalenging enough to be fun without being so frustrating that I cheated/quit outright.

The environment in this level is outstanding; excellent use of custom objects. The music did a great job to make each part feel whole.

After I finished with the normal ending, I poked around in the editor to see what I could find. I might try for the seekrit ending later.

I find myself being put off by the difficulty though.  Hard?  I'd label it very hard - and judging from previous comments I don't think I'm the only one.  The jumps require meticulous precision.  I'm stuck on the screen that is your second screenshot (the cave one).  Am I missing a powerup, or is it just that hard?  Can you walk (jump) me through it?

it's probably the hardest screen in the level. kasran's pic shows exactly how to do it though. if youre frustrated, you can get the other keys and then come back to it, so don't give up! :)

It might just be that I took a long break from KS and haven't gotten used to controlling it again yet, but that little passage with the spikes on the walls seemed to kill me an unjust amount of times.

Huh? A level is easy if its enemies are easy, but the jumps can still be hard?
Anyway, another great level farik. Graphics are amazing, as always, and the gameplay is lots of fun, and super hard! This is one of the hardest levels Ive ever played that I have beaten.

Really liked this. Skill-based difficulty. I've played too many "difficult" maps that use projectile-spamming creatures that require more luck than skill to get past. I thought the tiles were really good and didn't mind the lifelessness. I thought it was a good design choice.

I only really had a couple of problems.

@ Ghost Head: I see what you mean. just the way the parts that cover Juni up were made, they didn't exactly 'fit' the invisible blocks that she walks on... so where they change up, its a little confusing. theres one cloud jump that comes to mind...
And the transitioning problems, well its hard to anticipate where people will i guess 'not see something coming' since i made the level and know what to look out for. but i tried pretty hard, tested the hell out of it to make sure nothing was overtly sneaky or cheap. anyways, glad you liked it :)

Ive played this a few more times. Still haven't found the hidden key but I can almost complete it to the normal ending without dying. I'm gathering a range of tricks for speed running the level.

oh my god, I like this level specially for the lotus

but unfortunately it make my fingers sooooo tired....

and my keyboard was angry too ;)

I wish if some place can be a umbrella that will be nice

and the neverending insane jump can make man crazy

if there are some stories or other things which can make me relax will be better

anyway kept on repeating some insane jump isn't fanny  :)


It is a nice job, farik ,but I like the hunt more  C)

Very pretty. Way too hard for me, but it's actually so pretty I just keep trying. So far I've made it to the screen where you have to jump from blossom to blossom, and that's taken me several weeks. (Playing intermittently, of course, not continuously.) ;-)
