Title: What's the stance on "condensing" tilesets?
Post by: Antikythera on July 31, 2010, 23:36:34
For example, I'd really like to have Juni's house (one tileset), a moon (a second tileset), and a third tileset that the majority of the level is built with... but I'm not sure if it's alright to condense the moon from one tileset into the space currently occupied by unused tiles in another (still giving proper credit of course).

What's the stance on this? Don't do it? Ask first? Do it, no one cares? Thank you.

You're not altering the tiles themselves, just arranging them so you can use them. I'd say do it.

I've seen it done more than I've seen permission asked to do it.

I suppose, that if the tilesets are from what's shipped with the game, you can combine them, but you still need to give proper credit to both tilesets as if you'd used the tilesets entirely.

If you got the tileset from another place, like posted on the forum or from another level, you will need to ask permission. Credits are also necessary of course.

Best is to always ask for permission, even if the tileset is shipped with the game.

this post (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=2565.msg29303#msg29303) sort of addresses that question. at least indirectly, I'd say. :)

Indirectly, yeah, but I wanted to be sure not to step on anyone's toes. It seems I have my answer. Thanks!
