Title: Download pre-release version 1 here
Post by: Nifflas on May 17, 2010, 17:09:53
Due to me changing a lot about how I work with Kreator and with game development, FiNCK will now be "free, kind of" which means that the main FiNCK world is free and only custom level support is an add-on that can be purchased. This is to maximize how much the game will spread since I'm no longer going to spend time and resources marketing what I do.

If you have developed a third party level for the beta testing competition, there's a separate thread in the beta testing area where I explain this more in detail, in case you don't want your level in the third party pack due to this change.

Anyway, before FiNCK is released in one week, I'm going to have an open testing phase. Ladies and gentlemen, I hereby present:

FiNCK as an installer (http://www.ni2.se/nifflas/content/FiNCK/FiNCK%20(pre-release%201).exe)
FiNCK as a portable build (http://www.ni2.se/nifflas/content/FiNCK/FiNCK%20(pre-release%201).zip)
...and The FiNCK level editor (http://www.ni2.se/nifflas/content/FiNCK/Editor%20(pre-release%201).zip) (you'll need the custom level support to be activated to test your levels though).

Feel free to try the game, but please don't tell every website about it quite yet. This is not the 1.0 version. The official release is in one week, and that's the version I want to give most attention to!

Edit by LPChip: Emphrased the last part. Its easy to miss in a swing of enthusiasm. C)

Edit by Nifflas: Thank you!

Edit by LPChip: You're welcome. :D

I second this. :P Also, do FiNCK levels have a place to be released, or is a spot going to open on the forum when the game is released? Or do we have to wait until KnyttLevels is done? Or will LPChip kill me for even mentioning that? Or will he kill me for assuming he would kill me for mentioning that? Or...

Blargh. I should be talking about the actual game.

There won't be a level database right away, but I'd appreciate if there could be a level section at the forums until a level database is up.

Hm, odd. How much will it be for custom level support?

Seeing the great things people made for Knytt Stories guarantees a purchase from me. I just hope others see it that way too.

Probably around $4 or so.

The physics when pushing against explodable bricks seem... bouncy. Generally brick walls don't knock people into pits.

Nifflas, any tips for the bomb-dropping killer boss dude? I have tried over a hundred times (somone in my familay was bored so they watched me play and counted it) and I cannot do it! I got sooo close one time but then got blown up when I was in mid jump, nowhere near anything! I was just sitting there and I blew up. No, I didn't hit space bar.

Anyway, any tips? I have been stacking blocks at the far right but every time I am about to get the last block I need I die.

Also, in the tutorial, I managed to get all the way up-right and I sawe another area. No matter how I stacked the blocks I couldn't get over the top of the screen. What is that area over there?

Has anyone else gotten all 25 coins yet or am I one of the first?  Nifflas days are special and I tend to tear through the game as quick as I can... I was the first to find some of the weirder stuff in Saira, but besides the paths you take to get all the coins, haven't noticed any easter eggs.... yet.  I'd feel really dumb making a 100% guide or secrets post before the game is even officially out.

Once again though, wonderful game!  The physics for the blocks did feel like they needed to be polished up a tiny bit... and this game was even shorter (and had much more backtracking to 100%) than Saira.  I know that it's a puzzle game but I would have loved to see some more action-oriented enemies and maybe a life system ala SMB2 for when the community makes their own levels.  However, I'm looking forward to screwing around with the game to see what I can do.  Thanks again for an awesome release.  :D

Asking for help

If I remember correctly, you don't actually get any of the coins going straight through the tutorial.  The one you are missing is from a door in:

hm, is lvl 1-5 (the area with the one bird, two ice blocks and trigger bomb) supposed to be this hard?

I know what I'm supposed to do, but the ice block doesn't stop in the middle of the platform. A lot of these puzzles require careful footwork, a bit of luck, and knowing how the blocks flow, and I can't quite get it to work. I had to edit the puzzle so the block had a stopper before it drops and hit the ground (but not so much that it made the puzzle too easy).

Also.. I wonder if there was a way to upscale the game screen. Like 2x. I have a high resolution monitor and its.. kinda hard to see. It'd be nice if it scaled evenly (thus the 2x). I don't mind big chunky pixels. I love em.

Yeah, basically you throw the bird into the top tunnel, then wait a little bit and throw the ice block into the bottom one. There's no aspect of getting the ice block to stop involved. I was considering to change that puzzle, but then some people said they really liked it so I decided to just let it be that way.

Coulda made the tunnels a bit shorter. But I suppose that would defeat the point of having the under-tunnel.

The game is not so atmospheric and artistic like previous knytts, saira, wadf. And big pixels - graphic is not smooth. Previous games were beautiful, and this one is just regular game without charm like before, nothing special. It doesn't rejoice the eyes (As for me).

I must say i kinda liked the new graphic style. Instead of being based on environment, the game is based on gameplay, so i can see why the graphics have been toned down a little.

When I first played it (even before the graphic overhaul the game went by), at first I felt a bit disappointed too, but the next day for some reason I found it incredibly beautiful. Perhaps it was the calm yet sad music from Area 1 which reminded me of the Hidden secret in WaDF, I don't know. Now FiNCK is one of my favorites, among Nifflas' games. Better than Knytt, if you ask me, and almost on par with #mas2 and WaDF.

This is already explained at the website. I can't keep the atmospheric stuff up all the time, I need a break from that too and create something that doesn't really mean anything, just because it's fun to create. It's impossible to keep up creating atmospheric games if I'm never allowed to even once take a break from it. Just doing something different once in a while is important to see things from a new perspective. I could never have created Night Sky if all I did was games about balls, and I could never have created Saira if every previous game was based on photographs.

From the beginning the way I saw the style of this game was the Nifflas seemed to be "returning to his roots" by making more quirky and unpolished type of indie game.  The inspirations of Super Mario Bros. 2 and Lyle in Cube Sector also hinted at this.  LiCS is also a game that uses simple graphics on purpose.  For those of us who grew up playing NES (I'm around the same age as Nifflas) we remember how fun (but also atmospheric in their own way) games could be even with very simple graphics.

Also, one thing I like about making levels for FiNCK is that I can try to focus on making them fun to play in a way that's similar to old NES games, whereas with Knytt Stories it's so hard to create beautiful atmospheres that I'm too perfectionist and never finish anything.  With FiNCK there's less pressure to make everything beautiful and its frees you up to focus on the level design itself.

Alright, I just finished the game and I gotta say, wow.  There's allot here in just the free release.  The game play is simple enough to pick up, but the variety of object and creatures lends itself to endless combination of puzzle.  Bravo.

In other words, I can tell it's specifically geared toward custom content.  Very awesome.

I will wait until the final release before I get the level creator.  Man.  Very cool stuff, Niff.  Very Cool.

<_<  The only thing missing was the potion that makes magic doors.

Oh, and turnips.  Couldn't find turnips.

<_<  The only thing missing was the potion that makes magic doors.

In the level I made during beta testing there is a sort of homage to the "mirror world" that those doors go to in Super Mario Bros. 2.  I did it on purpose to reference SMB2 which is also one of my favorite classic games.

OK, I have found more coins and secrets (yay) but I am at a complete loss of how to get that one coin in the desert area at the top left. And I can't find any other coins than that one! This is driving me mental; if somone doesn't hint me with what I need to do I might go insane.

But so far this game is excellent, not only in look and gameplay but the extreame diry cleverness of the abundant puzzles. This is some very nice work that I am sure will sell easily! Congrats on another greate game, Nifflas!

I have found some bugs that I cannot recall at this time but I will post them as I can. ;)

OK, I feel kind of stupid, but I can't get past the second desert area (Area 4-2, I guess), the one with the two bomb-spewing machines and a small critter. I can break the central walls easily, but the bombs explode way too fast to get one of them to the wall that blocks the exit... maybe I should've taken that clock device earlier? But I jettisoned it during a jump to get to said area, that jump was impossible otherwise :(

I kind of like the game. Quite easy to end, but frustanting to complete. Some levels have puzzle that are a lot harder to execute that to think about.Like, for example, i know what to do in the cave sector of the area 5 (the one with a red bird, a ''brown trapezoidish enemy" ,a jumper, a key, and a trigger bomb.) but its frustatingly hard.

the one with a red bird, a ''brown trapezoidish enemy" ,a jumper, a key, and a trigger bomb.
That level was so hard! Every single time I would miss one small thing and I was all like, "No! I forgot to not kill the trapezoid." :P
