Easiest way to make it transparent in the game is to fill the background with Magenta (255,0,255) or Pure Black (0,0,0), and save it as a 24-bit PNG.

Easiest way to make it transparent both in the game and online would be to use a program that can add true transparency, like GIMP or Irfanview.  In GIMP, you can get rid of the background by selecting it with a select-by-color tool and pressing Delete (the image must have an alpha channel for this to work).  It should be saved as a 32-bit PNG.
In Irfanview, what you would do is simply save as PNG and turn on the "Save transparent color" option when saving.  It will let you click in the image to pick a color that will be transparent.  (but beware that anything else that's the same color in the image will also end up transparent).

(this is in reply to a now deleted post by Bioshock)

I added an explanation to my other post right about the same time you added your question to yours, but I'll explain it a bit better:

There isn't any one specific tool that leaves behind transparency.  In GIMP, as long as your image has an alpha channel, anything like Delete, using an eraser, or moving something will leave behind transparency.  (if you don't have an alpha channel, it tends to leave the BG color behind, like what Microsoft Paint does).  If the image doesn't have an alpha channel, you can add one by going to Layer>>Transparency>>Add Alpha Channel.

By the way, forget my earlier suggestion about selecting it and pressing delete.  Just use the Background Eraser tool instead
Oops, never mind, I got it confused.  GIMP doesn't have a background eraser tool.

Uhh... why delete a topic just because the question have been answered? It's good to keep for future references. How silly of you to change both title and first post.

Indeed. Can you please edit your post and put your initial question back? Other people might have a similar issue and will need to know what answer you got so they can help themselves or post questions.

Since apparently this is for future references now, I will explain how to do the same thing in Paint.NET for you Paint.NET users:

Step 1 - Open the image with Paint.NET
Step 2 - Select the Magic Wand tool
Step 3 - Click on the white
Step 4 - Press DELETE
Step 5 - Save as a 24-bit (Auto never seems to recognize transparency)

Congratulations, the white border is gone!

Don't you mean 32-bit?

Use the magic wand tool, its not that hard to render something that small.

I think............

That works too; so long as it's not Auto, it will recognize the transparency.
