Title: Great Art, A Community Level - Now Under New Ownership
Post by: Pick Yer Poison on January 16, 2010, 23:08:00
So Basically--
It has been nearly two years since I started thinking about this project but until now I'm really taking it into full action.
The thing with 'Great Art' is that it's a community collaboration meaning alot of people work on it, something like gaia if you've ever heard of it.

General concept--
The idea here is to successfully design a level which has custom tilesets, custom music and custom objects. From here we can go into more detail. This level is basically an artistic theme where we have different people from the community (nifforumers!) participate in making screens for the level, I hope this isn't too complicated. This level consists of two areas, on the right the art exhibit (made entirely on singly designed screens for the purpose of looks) and on the left the exhibit (An exhibit of screens all made by the same participant). I guess I'm going to have to go into further basic design and rules.

Explaining the design theme and how it works--
So basically I get requests from people who would like to participate in the project and I send them the link (or you in any case). When the participant receives the link what they should do is, (1) Install the level, you will find the already finished screens, (2) begin adding onto the level by either making a 1 screen piece or an up to 12 screen exhibit, (3) finish what they are doing and send it back to me in no longer than 3 days.

I'm going to have to go into further depth on what to do when you get the level in the sense of designing, look at this picture: (http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/6650/crazy.png)
This shows that you design the art exhibit screens to the right and the exhibits to the left, the highlighted screen is the starting point. I'll further explain in a PM to participants and hand you the link to the level, for now I'm just making sure it operates properly.

Explanatory pictures:-

Spoiler: (click to show/hide)
The above one is the starting room, the below one is one of the screens I made with a description.

(Issues regarding the credits)
Please remind me to put your name into the credits until giving to someone else, this is my responsibility and I really need to do it, unless you're willing to put it in yourself.
(Issues regarding non-acceptance of screens or exhibits)
If for any reason I can't except your screen or exhibit due to malfunction in the music files, tilesets or custom objects or objectionable content I only have the choice to either give you another 3 days to fix it or hand an earlier version of the project without your screens on it to someone else.

If you have any questions about this project please ask.

Don't forget to volunteer!

Progress:-
22/5/09:- The project has began.
24/5/09:- Salmoneus has contributed.
27/5/09:- Firecat has contributed.
28/5/09:- Dandelion had contributed.
Note: been away for a short time but too long to upload on date :I
1/6/09:- Dynamite has contributed.
4/6/09:- Feline monstrosity has contributed.
Note: 10/6/09, Sorry for being gone so long and not getting much done with the project, It's been exam week and a rough week too, tomorrow is the last day so I'll start getting contributors this Wednesday.
20/6/09:- Pick yer Poison has contributed.
Note: 1/16/10 It's been loads of months and I didn't do much. Pick yer poison volunteered to take the project into his own hands so I gave it to him and now he's the moderator of it.

Sweeeet. Thanks!

I'm going to mainly stick with the rules that Soron estabilished for this, since they don't really have many holes in it. I'd like volunteering to be posted in the forum so as to make figuring out who volunteered first and such easier, although the submissions themselves will be distributed via PM. When giving me a submission, I also want you to tell me what tileset numbers you used; I will make a .txt file of which tilesets are being used to include with the level so that nobody ends up screwing up someone else's exhibits by removing their tilesets. You may only write over a tileset if it's not already listed as being used. And when overwriting default tilesets, please use common sense. If possible, try to overwrite the less useful tilesets.

Also, when making a submission, I expect every exit but one (at the opposite end as the entrance) to be closed. This may seem like common sense, but there's already an existing exhibit which showcases this. *glances at Soron* And needless to say, it should be impossible to die, not counting Ctrl+R, obviously.

Submissions are: CLOSED

If you have any questions about this project please ask.

Don't forget to volunteer!
You may do so as many times as you want, as long as each exhibit you make is separate. Those who haven't volunteered previously will be chosen over those who already have.

i could volunteer. but i already did.
Now where'd you get the idea that that meant you couldn't go again? :D If there were lots of volunteers, I'd gake people who hadn't contributed over people who hadn't, but anyone's welcome to do as much as they want as long as each exhibit they make is separate.

sergiocornaga has volunteered to contribute.

sergiocornaga has contributed.

Everyone else is free to as well, even if you've made a prior contribution. If I don't get any more contributions then I'll probably just release it as-is, although it feels like it's a bit lacking in size right now. :/

Depends how you want to art? Something cartoony or beautiful?

And what size should I make it?

Cartoony or beautiful or creepy or surreal or whatever you please. The size is either a one-screen feature (you can make as many as you want, within reason, but each should be separate), or an up to 12 screen exhibit (you can make one or two). Do you want to volunteer? :D

Yup I'll volunteer. :D

I'll draw something on paper (which is easier than I can draw on the computer). And make that a one screen exhibit.

So I have to make the ground for Juni as well, right?

Yep. Wanderer has been busy for the last few days, so he's asked me to start the rotation; he'll volunteer again later when he has enough free time to get his part done.

ACWL, I'm sending you the project files now.

Just a q the tileset that you use to create the screen has to be made by yourself?
(this does not effect if i do it or not i just wanna know  :) )

Nope, it can be any tileset, made by anyone, although I'd prefer if you didn't use one that's already in a previous exhibit/screen. I also have a list of used tileset slots, so if someone's already used one, you either have to import that tileset again and renumber it, use a different one, or renumber the other person's and fix all their stuff.

I just finished my contributions, just need to put them in a good folder. Should I zip them or can I just leave it as the straight level folder? I already did my used tilesets/gradients part, so less work for you.

Had a sudden surge of inspiration and I'm already finished :P
12 screens, and I can't find anything to improove atm.

But I still want to work on it, so I have 2 3 questions:

1) I'm thinking about adding some COs, would that be okay?

2) Can I make a one-screen piece too?

Edit: 3) If yes on 2, can that one-screen piece be in the same style as the 12-piece?
Title: Re: Great Art, A Community Level - Now Under New Ownership
Post by: bulbapuck on June 29, 2010, 15:06:09
I'm just assuming the answer was "yes" for all three, and that would mean I'm ready to submit. I just need help with one thing:

Can someone make the background of the 2 COs attached transparent? For some reason I can't :p

Is there some line you have to add in the World.ini file to make the background transparent?

EDIT: the hell? One of them is transparent? They're not transparent in the game anyway, anyone know what could cause this?

EDIT2: Fixed it, nvm this.

There, uh, kinda isn't anyone else in the list. XD

After you've had your shot at it, I'm gonna give another quick pass around to see if anyone else wants to contribute for the first time or again, then probably release it. Feel free to take all the time you need to get to your contribution; you're currently the only person on the list, so you're not holding anyone up. :)

Also, the reason that you couldn't DL the file was probably because I used FileSmelt. It's been having a lot of server trouble recently, and I'm probably gonna switch to a different hosting service until I can depend on it again.
