Title: Nifforum's Isometric Village
Post by: Shawnachu on March 12, 2009, 03:51:17
Basically, we start with an isometric, pixel art house. Then, anyone can add one house to it. Then we keep building it up until eventually we have a huge thing of awesome.  :D

If you don't know how to draw isometric buildings, here is a tutorial:

...Interesting. But shouldn't this count as a forum game?

EDIT: Shouldn't we need more that just houses like grass and trees and stuff?

And roads, but that can be determined when more people place their houses.

This sounds an awful lot like this (http://mrpigproductions.com/Niffland/). (Of course, that project is like a year old and dead.) I think it'd still be possible to add on to the old Niffland project, but Mr Monkey would have to be the one to add the stuff to the Niffland page.

Wow. That site isn't down yet.  It's very buggy and old.  If I ever re-did it I would change a lot.

No matter, though, as I renounced ownership of the site a little while back, and it's just a matter of time until it all stops working.  :P

I might get a new site in the near future, though, and if I make another Niffland, I will surely add an interface for users to upload images, etc.  :D

Does it have to be handdrawn or can we also use a 3d-Software?
If we can, I got one :^^:

I think hand-drawn pixel art is preferred in this case.

What I'd suggest if you have 3d software on hand, and aren't that much of a pixeler, is make your draft in 3D, then import the render into GIMP and pixel over it on a second layer...

Hmm.. maybe if I turn out AO and Shadows?
I think these are looking more pixelated.
If they aren't in the right style, then I maybe try to do what Gaeel said.

I think it should be fine as long as it looks pixely. It doesn't matter what kind of program that made it, as long as it looks like it could be pixel art.

I personally still believe it should be redone; placed next to the example house, it would look out of place, because the shading on the wall of the example house is a lot less intense. B:

Just my opinion.

Interesting! If this project becomes real, I might add a thing or two. :)

Pixel art is my hobby.

Oh yeah, and you can also use my avatar.

EDIT: More pixel art.

EDIT 2: Oops, forgot to make it transparent.

EDIT 3: Attachments removed. See next page for updated images.

I improved my pixel art images. Firecat's pic reminded me that I have to change the colo(u)rs of some internal lines.

im not too good at isometric pixelart .
I think you're slightly better than me, and if not, then at least you have better ideas than me. :)

I say we should revive this. I've been getting into pixel art recently, and I'm interested in starting to do iso stuff. I'll attatch my work when I'm done. :)

Also, if you want someone to draw roads, I would like to.

Is possible to make it with the Gimp?

I don't see why not. I recommend a program called Graphics Gale, but I still use GIMP to make it transparent.

"Getting out of hand" means the exact opposite. :P But yeah, I don't have anything to contribute. :V

Well, I guess if you need to help, I can pitch in a house or two. :)

Anyone else want one? I guess I could make a couple besides mine.

Just give me some specifications and I will cater to the design. Considering I'm a carpenter, my house will probably look pretty B-A... X)

I hope this is not necromancy...

Anyway, I made a greenish-gray place/building/something using a combination of GraphicsGale, MS Paint, and Paint .NET.

I'm necromancing again...

pixelhouse.png was made by Avoid and me.
stuffshop.png is just a random shop I made.

Hopefully everything ended up transparent.

For a change, I used PowerPoint instead of Paint.NET/Photoshop to make it transparent. Not including transparency, everything was made with MS Paint. :D

NINJAEDIT: 3 PAGES!
NOTNINJAEDIT: pixelhouse.png shows up now. Stupid computer... >(
NOTNINJAEDIT2: Added isopix1.png. Three joined hexagonal double-doored apartment buildings... don't you think that's an interesting change? :D
