Title: [Environmental] The Mysterious Grotto (IT'S DONE :U)
Post by: Pumpkinbot on March 07, 2009, 20:13:38
Since the old forum died, my beta of this no longer exists. So I'm not gonna put out any more public betas until it is finished. So I guess it's a preview level. (If a mod disagrees, then go ahead and delete this.)

And here's something I made out of boredom.
RECENT NEWS: I'm running out of ideas, so post tilesets or ideas of areas you'd like to see in TMG. No guaruntees that it'll be in the level, but it's worth a shot, huh?
Oh, and I'm attatching a picture of how many screens there currently (EDIT: Not up to date. X)) are in TMG. :shifty:

Well, I think you may be slightly disappointed because Garden is more like a part of Sky Temple. :/ But since I know someone likes this one, I'll make it bigger. :3

I think it would be cool to have a kind of easy-exit shift maze. Like this guy says to keep taking a certain shift to get out, but it's cool to like explore with no idea what you're doing.

EDIT: But that mightn't fit in with the scheme of this level.

Eh, I might implement a maze in the level.

And is "mightn't" seriously a word?  XD

This level is getting better and better! I'm really looking forward to when you finally release it! :) As for houses, or tilesets in general, I don't know how good I am at drawing them, but I've just done a saloon (heavily inspired by this picture: http://www.kolpingjugend-peissenberg.de/Reports/Images/saloon.gif), and if I can help in any way (be it good or bad, or just with one single saloon ;)), I'll try because I'd hate to see this project abandoned! :) So, well, have a look at the attachment...

...:O That's amazing! But, unfortunately, I can't use it because I told Purple Pineapple he could do it. :( But it seriously looks a-freakin'-mazing. :D

EDIT: You can probably make a tileset yourself. Just make sure to put transparency in. It's either pure black (RGB 0,0,0) or magenta (RGB 255,0,255)

C)p That's okay! I just took this as a sort of inspiration to draw something - at first, I didn't even draw it with the primary intention of uploading it so no bad feelings there ;) I also realise that strictly speaking, it's not even isometrically correct - just have a close look at the planks (is that the right word?) on the floor in front of the windows; but I suppose that's a general problem when trying to introduce perspective into pixel art... But it's not as evident now as it is at 800% zoom, I can tell you... :P If you like it anyway (I'd be honoured if you did), I would be okay with Purple Pineapple integrating it into his/her tileset (if he/she is okay with that too); I wouldn't even insist on being credited, just feel free to use it any way you like ;)

I could also make a tileset if you want me to, just tell me what kind of tileset you'd need - but it would be my first real tileset so you shouldn't rely on me alone X-P And I ought to warn you that I'd only be able to work rather slowly because I have to move in April and there's so much to do for university... But if I can shorten the waiting time for the level a little by contributing something (even if it would just be an unfinished tileset) that would be nice :)

By the way, I use GIMP, which has "real" transparency - would you be able to work with that as well? (In fact, I think I used pure black for the borders of my saloon - I could paint them over with (1,1,1) though.)

Not to speak for the 'Bot here, but alpha-channel transparency should be even better. XD
Pure black and magenta are usually used as workarounds in programs like MS Paint that have no transparency tools.

Are you gonna use custom objects? That is the big thing these days. >.>
An environmental level ought to have new things to look at. It's not that big still, but I'm assuming you intend for it to be larger--in which case you'll want to have a lot of variety, which custom objects would assuredly help with.

Yeah, I don't see why everyone is so worked up over custom objects. It's a nice addition for sure, but unless you pull it of extremely well and make sure that no two objects on the screen are in sync, it will look weird.

Oh, I'm sure that's easy, since you can control the speed of custom objects anyway.

@ Evil: Uhh...no...The top part is one half of the game, the lower section is another half (excluding that small strip below the lower half; that's Niffane Beta). Those 3x2 boxes you see on the far left of the sections is the Pirate Ship, which allows you to go between those two areas. I may add other areas you can go to via the Pirate Ship, like Gaia.

@ 4a: Of course! I've already made 20 public COs and 2 other ones, one of which may be released once I release this level.

This keeps looking better and better. I enjoyed the demos on the old forum - the beehive had very nice usage of COs.

I don't remember if that was a demo for this, or another one of your levels, but there was an excellent PumpkinBot CO which gave me an idea - perhaps an 'Behind the Screen' area where Juni passes through the fourth wall and fiddles around with motherboards, processors, etc - perhaps even sliding down the Intarweb cable to end up in the forum (I know, that's sort of been done, but it could be done differently - with COs of certain users such as mods, etc... Maybe even Nifflas on his AdminThroneTM? Like a combination of the Nifftown level with the Forum part of Don't Eat the Mushroom).

Also, if you need any tileset help, gimme a shout. I'm always happy to lend a hand.

The first part with the beehive was this level, and the part with my Pumpkinbot was The Terrain Deviates. And lemme see what tilesets you have made. I want to see if I could use some of the ones you've already made. :3 I may make a Vista area, but don't count on it. (And I hate Mac, so don't suggest it. <_<)

If by "quiet" you mean literally too quiet, it's possible to amplify any music.

Any songs that are too long could very easily be edited down and/or changed to a lower bitrate. (You might need the musician's specific permission to edit it. I'm not sure if an edit counts as a derivative work. Probably not.)

Amplifying/editing/bitrate changing can all be done with Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/).

No it isn't. It contains a four-note figure that is very similar to a figure occurring in one of the KS tracks, but the track itself is not in KS. (You can see all five of the musicians who did work for the game in KS's credits section.)

...Oh, well...Anyone know a site with good music? That I can legally use in this level (obviously)?

A quick Googling comes up with (http://www.joshwoodward.com/music/) several (http://www.sectionz.com/home.asp) sites (http://www.jamendo.com/en/) that have Creative Commons-licensed music, then the Creative Commons site itself has a search thing (http://search.creativecommons.org/) that lets you find legally usable music. (Be sure to check the relevant license information, though, before using any music, as there might be a few situations where the license would prohibit this sort of use.)

What about.... a grand canyon?
It could branch off from Cydonia and be a deep, near vertical descent on both sides of the Canyon, with a deserty area in between.

Oh no, please don't abandon it!

Ideas... let's see... Well, seeing how you seem to be a music lover, how about a music shop where Juni has to run around between giant guitars and other instruments? (You could solve that mostly with a gradient consisting of a photo of these instruments, you wouldn't even need a tileset for that, or a very stripped-down tileset at the most.) Or you could have her play music on a piano keyboard (making each key one tile wide and putting shifts on each one which teleport her to a copy of the screen with the respective key pressed down and the respective note playing - you'd have to put a lot of tracks which are only one note long into your music folder, but that shouldn't be a problem, should it?). Maybe you could even put a Guitar Hero section in, who knows? XD (Although I wouldn't know how to do that...) You could also let her flip through a CD/record collection and decide what to play on a jukebox or something like that (also very shift-heavy, but you would copy and paste screens most of the time; the only problem there could be your choice of music since chances are that the songs you first think of are copyrighted).

Another idea - you could let her watch TV and suddenly get zapped into the show she is watching - there, too, you couldn't use a popular show as it is. You'd have to alter it a little so it becomes something different and still remains recognisable. Or you could just very generally go with one genre of film she is watching - a western might be appropriate for the Cydonia section, for example. This might also be an interesting concept for a frame story, if you haven't got one already.

Sorry if these ideas appear a little strange, but I can't think straight right now, and this is the best I've come up with after a little brainstorming C)p

Edit: Or how about a spider web on layer 3 (in an attic maybe)? I can't recall this having been done before, and conveniently, we already have a full-blown spider in the data folder :)

TRON! A TRON tileset wouldn't be too much work at all...

At any rate, this definitely shouldn't be abandoned. A release (or beta release) would be better than just giving up on it - and it might inspire us all to give you more / better ideas.

I must admit I don't know that one - maybe it's an English-speaking countries-only (or -mainly) thing... But that doesn't matter! :D

Perhaps Juni could also be caught up in a kitchen and have to fight her way through different kinds of food, such as crawling through cheese holes (COs in front of Juni!), swimming through soup or a bowl of cornflakes or eating her way through a cake - after that you could temporarily take the run powerup from her because she's too full to run XD

What a sweet idea! It inspired me to start with the piano gradient, if you're interested, of course. In my opinion, it has turned out a little too plain, and it's only the piano keyboard because somehow I don't really feel up to drawing the rest of it...  Maybe someone else feels he/she can manage it... Hope I could help at least a little... :)

X) Thanks, everyone! But I don't think I'll end up making a giant music shop because there's no good tilesets like that (and I don't have an .ogg of each note). But I was thinking about having a WaDF level where Juni gets zapped into the computer and goes into Within a Deep Forest.exe. :shifty: And I might use the special gradient, I just don't know how. :P

It was sort of a dirty trick on my part. X) It was to see if anyone posted. If they did, then that means they care about the level. If nobody did, then that meant nobody cared about it. See, I wanted to make sure people wanted to play it before I send it out. But I was out of ideas. And I did add a small canyon part that's part of Cydonia.
