Meh. The tilesets and environments are really good, but the music just ruins it for me.

Played it now and I've got to agree with Razzorman :/
Also, after a while the environments started to look very similar...

No.

but the music just ruins it for me.

There is some problems, like tracks playing to high but I haven't bothered to fix that.

I liked the first version and ditto on this one. I'm not quite done. I'm sure I haven't found all the secrets.
Spoiler: (click to show/hide)

As for the music I find it highly appropriate. Some level makers use music that is sooo jarring and loud that it makes playing the game unenjoyable. I guess it's all a matter of taste. However, in my mind, your music choices are more in the same vein as the original developed by Nifflas.

Same environments? Maybe the poster was playing another level.

This is definitely not a "meh" level. The proliferation of shifting, trickery etc in recent months jades  people I think. When a level comes  along that harks back to the ks roots and doesn't have all the newest bells and whistles, people I'm afraid, consider it boring. I don't.

Great job.

Eh, I didn't mean to offend... I just meant that after a while it becomes kind of repetitive  Each surface area has its underground counterpart. Each area has rectangular tiles for foreground and for background. Critters are always 1 or 2 per screen, either dangerous or harmless. All areas are connected. Etc. I know there was a lot of work put into this, I've no idea why it feels repetitive to me. I usually love Salmoneus/Elder's levels. :moody:

I thought this level was good, but there are a few things I'd like to point out that didn't really help. I didn't care at all for the music, sorry. Just not my style I guess. And also while I feel you achieved the feel you wanted for the level, the bright greens and lack of contrast in places made it somewhat uninteresting, and more importantly, gave me a headache. So good, but better music and more contrast between the greens and the foreground/backgrounds would probably make this a ton better (to me at least). Anyway, it's a good level and it's probably one of your better ones as well. :)

Mabye since it's green everywhere  X)
But the enviroments doesn't look all the same thought, for that. Each tileset is only in use for a few screens and each tileset is different. All critters and custom objects are used in specific places, same thing with other objects. Other than the whole level is green I can't think of anything else. Other then how I design my levels.  :)

haha. way to take constructive criticism.

yeah  :^^:

I remember playing the first one and it is indeed a very good level. The athmosphere is fantastic at times. But what did you do with the music? It's so annoying! Especially for an environmental. I think something more similar to the original music would fit this level much better and I think it would improve it.

You can use Audacity (http://"http://audacity.sourceforge.net/") to edit the wave itself, and export it to ogg once you have lowered the volume. I use it to edit the music in order to play it in KSDS.

In my opinion the Donkey Kong music was a little too fast paced for the peaceful environments, also I like a level that does not have nearly pixel perfect jumps one to two screens from the start. Otherwise it is great.

I probably would've finished a week ago, but I keep getting carried away working on my own level. (Shh, Hmpf, I know. Soon.) Anyway...

Now you've released v2.5, but it seems to have the same filename & stuff... should I overwrite the existing .knytt.bin file? Do I need to reinstall? What will happen to my saved game? Poor Juni, I left her standing there for days without closing the window now, lol.

Incidentally, the prospect of your having made MP even more awesome nearly made my head explode.

I don't know. The file would overwrite so I think the save would dissapear. The new version is nothing special anyway. Nothing new.

But what you could try is to take the save file out of the world folder, overwrite and put in the save file again. I don't know if that works with ks but you could try.

You can indeed save and transfer save files for KS. I routinely do this to transport games from my laptop to my desktop and back.

Hmm... this reminds me I haven't finished Mashu Prapa 2.0 yet... Damn you, Real Life, for being so busy right now!

If by "ks roots" you mean Knytt, then yes. They are pretty close and both are boring. Knytt Stories original levels aren't like that at all.

Wow. You are the first person I've heard say that I think.

I haven't seen anyone else say so here, but calling Knytt boring isn't that uncommon elsewhere on the internet... mainly among testosterone-poisoned adolescents (of whatever chronological age) who find any game where you can't either shoot things or blow things up boring. It is a surprising sentiment to see voiced on the Nifflas forums, though.

Personally, I can (and do) spend hours wandering through Mashu Prapa and Knytt... and in some ways I find MP more engaging than I do Knytt. (It's quite possibly the green.) They each have their different touches that really "shine" to me.

(It's quite possibly the green.)

Definitely the green. ;-)

But, seriously. Yeah, I think the green is at least part of it - MP feels like a fertile and welcoming place, whereas Knytt can be a bit bare-feeling, sometimes almost desert-like. It can feel a little bit forbidding at times, and I'm not always in the mood for that. (I do love Knytt, too, though.)

Hmm... I've had a stressful couple of days, maybe I should go play some MP now...

Oh, I must disagree (sorry to derail the topic a little). I can't get enough of those bleak environments, like the
Spoiler: "Just in case" (click to show/hide)

I'm always in the mood for Knytt! I find it so relaxing in a way that no KS level has ever matched.

To make this post a bit more on-topic: I actually quite like most of the music in Mashu Prapa. It makes a nice change from the moody ambient music most KS levels have (the default songs) to something a bit more old-school MIDI sounding. One of the songs really annoyed me though.

I found most of the music in MP fit really well with its associated environment, and was an integral part of what distinguishes each area from the neighbouring areas. MP is a level I won't play with the sound off.

Okay, I finally found
Spoiler: (click to show/hide)
so now I'm just wandering around to those last few places I couldn't get to before.

And then I came upon this screen again:
Spoiler: screenshot! (click to show/hide)

I've been through here a bunch of times before, and I've tried coming at the part of the screen where Juni gets the 'secret' glow from every angle, including going around to other screens and trying to see if I have to access the secret passage from elsewhere... I'm stumped! Was there not supposed to be a detect-glow there, or am I just missing something?

Once I finally finish the version I've been playing, I will be downloading 2.5 -- though I'll probably give myself at least a week or two before I give it a spin, so it can seem fresh to me.

That's one of the secret animal screens. And in the screenshot, you are very close to the passage.  ;)

NES or SNES or both, I don't remember. Some donkey kong contrey in there anyway. But the music is not from it's orginial source either, it's also .midi files converted into .ogg might sound weird.

Aha! Now the funny thing is that, between when I left that comment and when you replied, I left the KS window running MP open, minimised & muted, and in the interim I've messed with a couple of other levels -- play-testing my own, and checking out the just-released "Underground" and "A Knytt In Time, League of Crap Players Edition" -- and, apparently, KS did that thing where sometimes it decides that you didn't really mean to minimise that window, and moves Juni in both games.

And I actually hadn't saved at the nearest savepoint (or I did, but did a lot of blind moving around!) and so, when I brought MP back up just now, I had to backtrack a goodly ways, from the beige-crosshatched area in fact, to get back to the screenshot-screen. Wouldn't you know it,
Spoiler: A clue! (click to show/hide)

I'm quite fond of the visual effect in that area, all that green in those particular shades, and the little green turtles (which are my favourites of all the turtles in KS) matching so well. It is one of the areas where the music creates a feeling of... hm, apprehension? which, while not entirely inappropriate, does tend to keep me focussed enough on "okay, don't die here" that I can't quite appreciate those visuals as much as I might otherwise. Most of the areas where the music has that effect are significantly less green, also... I think the only other really extra-attractive green area where the music doesn't contribute to the "relaaax and enjoooy the soooothing greeeen" is where the beavers are -- coincidentally another of my favourite areas, probably in my top three for the level, largely for those gorgeous ferns, though the way the background tiles suggest an ambient glow helps with that as well.

And I'm also fond of all the little -- as you dubbed them -- secret animal screens. The animals' dialogue is so cheerful, and often conspiratorial ("have you...?"); those screens are absolutely essential to the charm of MP for me.
