Title: [easy-environmental-small/medium-ish]ice
Post by: inky84 on July 10, 2009, 02:19:47
I wanted to make a small environmental  level, about some world similar to Antarctica.
Considering I live in New Zealand, I know quite a lot, so that helps.

no real plot yet, but I'll be sure to add one.

It looks alright, but it could maybe use some more decoration. I realize it's supposed to be desolate and lifeless, but it looks a bit boring as it is. A custom tileset would benefit this level a lot, check out the old forum for some good ones.

Looks good. The whatever in the second screen seem a bit too abundant, though.

Did you mean the background birds? because yes.

Not the boat, the birds. There are too many.

WAY too many. O_o

Also, I'd like to second the idea of adding more detail. The first screen's pretty bare as is.

You should make the penguins move...

I would love to see custom tileset in this level.

sure, I suppose I could ^^

i'm on holiday, so I'll work on it then, but I will have no internet, so requests right now will help.
I've also halved the amount of birds you see in those screens

(note: the penguin-like creatures are co's at different speeds, so it looks like they're all shuffling around ^^)

The birds are awesome.
I think that everything is already clear, isn`t it? More details, a better boat...
It owuld be cool to have something like an transparent Ice-cave or something like that, you could use CO`s to create a really cool one, just so you know.
And I would love to see some Eskimos =D

I was on holiday, so I had hours of private time to work on this.

I've made some CO's, some custom enemies and all those tricks, and I've used as little, but as much as I could to create a more detailed, but still empty space.

Here's some new screenshots:
Spoiler: (click to show/hide)
I modified this one (see first post)
the other one has one or two small "visual" bugs I haven't yet attended to.

these two are new.
oh, and vinterrun: It's a knytt equivalent of the antarctic. no Eskimos.

To be honest I preferred the old screenshots; these new ones are very cluttered, and, as such, not really appealing.

I'd really suggest making a custom tileset to replace that default winter one; it hardly needs to be very fancy, since you are, after all, going for a feeling of emptiness.

fanciness or non fanciness, neither has no relation to emptiness. You cannot have "fancy emptiness" nor "non fancy emptiness".
Clutter has relation to emptiness. you can have "cluttered emptiness". Whatever your take on "cluttered emptiness" is, is your opinion.

Do you see what I'm trying to say?
I'm making an environmental level, which also seems empty. You can add more environment to make it more environmental, and you can suck most of the life out of it to make it empty.

I decided to "clutter" the landscape with "empty" objects, e.g I have a custom object for wind. Wind is empty. However it "clutters" the air.
I excluded the "tree" parts of the snowy trees, to make lifeless snowy shrubs.
I make whatever creature which is on the landscape as tiny and/or as "adapted to ice" as possible (lizards, little popping creatures, penguins, sea lions, etc)
I make "mountains", mountains which are colorless and lifeless.
Water rolls down some of these, but still no life reliant on it surrounds it.

I'm not trying to offend or hurt you in any way, or if you think I'm trying to act smart, and I am sorry if it just so happens that you are, however, when I mean "empty", I mean "lonely", or "without life". Do you get what I mean?

And last thing, I, more or less, am very close to Antarctica, and I know much about it. So I implement such knowledge into this level. However for it to be playable as an environmental level, There has to be a more environmental aspect to it. and for it to be a knytt level, it needs to have a more "knytt" like aspect implemented.

I hope you understand that, and hopefully you, in fact, will enjoy the finished product of this level :)

MUCH better. This is looking like something I'll want to play. :D
That's great!

I'm around a quarter of the way through this, so hopefully you'll enjoy it all ^_^

I understand every bit what you mean by "empty," and it is my opinion that these new screens have too much stuff going on in them, which makes them, to me, unappealing.  However, obviously we all have our own opinions.  Heck, it's your level after all.
