Title: Knytt Cave Stories
Post by: AhhCobras on June 18, 2009, 20:26:13
Hey, before I get to into it I just wanted to make sure this is okay and hasn't been done yet. I looked but couldn't find one anywhere. Anyway, to celebrate the hopefully soon release of Cave Story for Wiiware, I have started a Knytt Stories level of the first cave. So far just the first room though. I saw a level remade from Zelda so don't think it's a problem, of course I will be crediting Pixel in it as I am basically resizing the tiles from screenshots. I'll post a picture of the first room here, but if anyone thinks there is a problem with using it, it is still freeware at the moment, let me know.

Historically, Pixel has been totally fine with fan projects like this, so it'd be perfectly fine. Of course, since Nicalis got control of Cave Story, they've inexplicably forced fan projects like this to be shut down. (eg, Indie Brawl, I believe a fan port to DS, etc.) So you should probably check with them first.

Anyway, you should check with Nicalis, like goog said.

Ooh...I hope they allow it. That's one of my favorite indie games! (my favorite ATM being Iji)

Why thank you! I haven't heard anything official on the Nicalis forums, but a couple people have said they don't see any reason it couldn't be released. As I stated there, and here, it's still in the very early of the first cave so I'll keep it up and as long as I'm not told I need to stop, I hope it will be done in a few days. At least up through Mimiga village.

Also I noticed I didn't put a descriptive bracket ahead of the name, but right now it will be mostly just environmental, even the water won't hurt you. If it works out, and I am still inspired, I may use the tilesets to make some new caves. Huzzah! for now.

Probably should have said something like, beta test or whatever, but the first cave is up on the levels archive. Couldn't be creative enough, so it's just called Juni's Cave Story. Still only the first cave, but I wanted to get some feedback on how its done. Should I add enemies? Should I make the platforming harder/easier? Stuff like that, hope you guys can help me out, thanks!

BTW it is very short, so just keep that in mind. The cutscenes are probably about as long as the gameplay X-P

[mod]I'm really sorry that you had to clear my message as I was back-seat moderating. While I pointed out something in the Official Forum Rules, I should've seen that I had to report the post instead.[/mod]

EDIT: sorry, I should have remembered that

So most of the area around Mimiga village is done, but I was wondering, is there another place I can upload the level for testing temporarily? I don't think there's a way to delete the levels from the level archive, and I don't want to fill it up with three or four different beta versions of the level. And on the subject, would anyone like to test it for me?  :)

I highly recommend Box.net. (http://www.box.net) It's easy to use, and free accounts get about 1G of space. It let's you make folders, too, so it's really easy to organize stuff. C) (Sorry for sounding like a billboard :P)

Allright, thanks I'll try that. It will let people download from there without being added as contacts though right?

You can give people links to files without them being able to upload files to your account. Is that what you mean?

No, when I first signed up it asked me to add e-mails for who I wanted to be able to view my documents. So if I made a file on there public, I should be able to just post a link which will connect to it without giving someone permission? Probably I'm just thinking too much into it, I'll try to post a link when I get enough done to warrant a test. Having warp issues right now.

P.S. Thanks again :)

Oh, I see what you're talking about. It does that every time you upload a file, too; it's completely optional. If you want to just share one file, then after you upload it, there will be a link labeled "Share" next to it. Clicking on this gives you a link which you can then give to people so that they can download that one file. Sorry for the confusion! C)

An alternative to box.net would be Will Host For Food (http://willhostforfood.com).  You have unlimited space, and files can be up to 100MB for members/10MB for non-members.  (And 500MB for premium users, but whatever.)

Ok, I've been working hard on this thing for a while and think I have something that's starting to resemble a game. But now, I need your help! Please test and give me some feedback, there are three areas right now; the very small first cave, Mimiga Village and it's surroundings, and the Egg Corridor. All are finished and playable. Enemies are sparse but present in any place the original game had them. This is one thing I need feedback concerning, another is the difficulty. I planned to make it more an environmental, so don't really want to many discouraging jumps and such, but also don't want to bore you guys ( I know some of you are hardcore :P) One thing I plan to counter that with is a few secret areas, which will add a challenge for those who want it but will not be necessary to see the full game. They will be hidden in a somewhat.. unorthodox manner  :shifty:.. One last thing, after compressing the game I realized I had left out the win tile, so there is really no ending right now. The egg corridor is the last place, so once you've been through there you have pretty much seen it all. I leave you with a few new screenshots, and a plea to play through and let me know what you think. Also *duh* a link to the download, almost forgot that bit :sigh: http://www.box.net/shared/rl9e6864fo (http://www.box.net/shared/rl9e6864fo)

Thanks for your help! Bye!

OMG! lol i cant believe i havent seen this already lol it looks epic, will it have the same music as in the actual cave stories or just default i think it should be the whole 8bit themes lol.. cave story ftw :P2

oh also custom objects are a MUST for this level and will the tilesets be released puplicly (i want to fool around with them >:D)

I dont see why you would do this project. its very pointless. If someone wants to play cave story then they play cave story. And look at Juni and all the enemies, non of them fits into the cave story graphics.

If everyone took that attitude, Valve would never have made Portal.

I guess it's the same reason that people make Zelda tilesets, or La Mulana. Well it's a way for me to get some practice using the KS editor for one, and as I said in the beginning I want to hype up the eventual Wiiware release of Cave Story. I doubt there are many people who don't know about CS, but if any I hope this will make them seek it out as well. Also it isn't only a direct copy, a lot of areas will have to be tweaked quite a bit because of the lack of a scrolling screen. Also, I think I mentioned before that I will put a few hidden extra levels in for those of you who need challenging jumping puzzles and such things. Though I agree the graphics don't fit well together, but not much I can do to change that.

Indeed.

You mean for enemies? or what? I did make CO's out of a few things, but just so they would show in the foreground, in front of Juni. The music is from the original soundtrack, so most places should have the same feel from CS. As far as tilesets, if you really like them, go ahead and use them (just copy them out of the level folder) as long as you 1. leave the credit at the bottom alone (unless you modify the tileset, then you can cram your name in there somewhere :P) and 2. declare publicly how awesome Cave Story truly is!  ;)

Lolwut. Portal isn't a clone of an existing game- it's a major expansion upon the ideas present in a smaller, less polished game.

The product of this project, however, will inevitably be less polished than the original. To be honest, I think just taking a tile-based game and then forcing its layout into another tile-based game is rather futile. I'd find a reimagining of Cave Story so that it works in KS to be much more interesting than a dedicated if awkward clone. (I mean, like, borrow ideas from Cave Story's level design, and use its graphics, but use the ideas and graphics in a way that suits KS's gameplay and focus on atmosphere.)

I think the REAL reason people make clones (or why knytt Cave stories is being created) is to take away sortof from gameplay to add a more environmental effect, to allow theplayer to take time to observe the EPIC retro-ish graphics that cave story offers... just a side note why do people make covers for songs? it's essentially the same reason for game clones, to give tribute to games that people enjoy  C) thought i'd give my word on this topic :P2

I cant wait for this to be released

also i agree with goog :shifty: to some extent  XD

While Cave Story's graphics are good, I don't think they can carry the weight of an entire level.

And the best cover versions of songs are typically the ones least like the originals- cf Joe Cocker's cover of With a Little Help from My Friends, Jose Feliciano's cover of Light My Fire, etc.

So you guys think it should be used for an original, non-environmental style level, or the graphics just don't fit enough that it will never look right?
