Title: Benchmark test: please look at this
Post by: minmay on February 05, 2010, 23:15:21
So, if anyone remembers Flipping, it's getting a graphical revamp.

Download this and unzip it into your KS Worlds directory (can't compress levels into .bins right now, sorry) (http://www.cowmuffins.net/stuff/flip.zip).

"Play" it (there's not really anything to play), and post in this thread whether or not you experience any slowdown, both in the first "room" and the second, along with your processor speed, RAM, graphics card, and operating system.  The first room has a moderate amount of custom objects, the second has a large amount including animated alpha transparency.

Basically, I need to know whether to make a "lo-fi" version without all these custom objects - it represents more work than you might think, so I only want to do it if there are people who wouldn't be able to play the regular version.

No slowdown for me.

Laptop computer
CPU Speed: 2.00 GHz
Memory: 3GB RAM (DDR2)
Graphics: "Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family" (with 1293MB on-board memory)
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium (x32)

There are two other setups I can test, and if and when I do, I'll add them to this post.  One of the test subjects is the same computer but in Ubuntu (assuming I can get KS to run in Linux), and the other possible test subject is a pretty old computer (384MB RAM, a bad processor, and a circa-2002 GPU that can't handle Windows 7).

PC (Acer aspire one, MEM: 1GB, CPU: Intel Atom 1.6Ghz, Mobile Intel 945, Windows XP SP3):

No slowdown on first screen, slowdown on second screen.

Nintendo DS:  8)

No slowdown on first screen, slowdown on second screen.

Works fine for me, no lag.
CPU went from an aprox. stable 12% to all over the place at 40-50%, though

Computer stats:
Laptop, Lenovo ThinkPadR500
CPU Intel Core2Duo 2.4GhZ
Windows7 HomePremium (x64)
4GB RAM (DDR2)
ATI MobilityRadeon 128mB intergrated graphics

EDIT:
I was also playing music at the same time...

No slowdown in the first room, barely noticeable slowdown in the second one.

Laptop
Core 2 Duo T5500 (1,66 GHz)
2GB RAM (DDR2)
NVidia Geforce Go 7300 (128 MB)
Windows Vista 32-bit

My old Laptop:
WinXP SP3
Intel Pentium M 1.7GHz
248 MB RAM
64 MB video RAM
DirectX 9

No problems. The only lag I've ever experienced is at the moment a new song loads. I tried that with your demo, and it still ran beautifully. Looks great by the way.

Almost unnoticeable slowdown on 1st screen, slowdown on 2nd screen.

40% CPU usage on 1st, 90% on 2nd (Firefox, IM and foobar were also opened)

Intel Celeron D 340 2,95GHz
1,5GB RAM (DDR2)
nVIDIA GeForce FX5500 (128MB)
WinXP

Slowdown on the second screen. 1GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, some intergrated graphics card (I forget and have no idea where to look, sorry), WinXP.

To check your hardware with details I suggest to download Everest :)

Thanks! I'll give it a try.
Also, the correct spelling is "unnoticeable" :)

I get 3 screens. In none of them I experience lag, but I do experience a slower switch to next screen moment.

The first time I tried this, it kind of went weird as it somehow went to the 3rd screen right away. That looked just wrong. But no slow down for me.

I'm running an Athlon 64 X2 5600+ with ATI Radeon HD5750 (I also play Modern Warfare 2 on high settings with no lag, so my system is very powerfull) 2 gb mem, win7

I said "room" and not "screen" in the hope that I could avoid confusion; the first two screens are the first room, and the second two screens would be the second room if there weren't only one screen because it's only there as a test :P

1st Screen: No lag
2nd Screen: Slight, miniscule lag

Windows XP SP3
Intel Pentium 4 3.00 GHz
1.5 GB RAM
Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family

Graphic Accelerators suck... :(

No slowdown anywhere, even with Firefox running in the background.

Windows Vista erm.. Home Basic, build 6002 (apparently)
2.2GHz Intel processor (not sure which of the range)
3GB RAM
Bog standard intel GFX-card (Mobile Intel 4 Series, if that means anything)

I can give feedback from my own rig tomorrow evening but, if this thing runs it with no trouble, mine's gonna breeze through.
Just for the record;

AMD Athlon 4000+
3GB RAM
Cheap-and-cheerful Nvidia card with 1GB V-RAM

I know this isn't very precise, but hopefully it's of some use to you  X)

I was just planning to just edit it into my first post when I got KS working on Linux, but the turnout was so different this time would be justified to make a second post.

In Ubuntu, it is really bad.  Juni moves really choppy, and on the transition to the second room, I first see a bunch of red dots (the tiles under the objects, I guess?) for about a full second.  If I press Ctrl+R, Juni's death animation takes about 21 seconds.  *gasp*

I'm really surprised, because the computer had no problem with this level in Windows, and other levels that I would expect to lag are running fine in Ubuntu.

Laptop computer
CPU Speed: 2.00 GHz
Memory: 3GB RAM (DDR2)
Graphics: "Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family" (with 1293MB on-board memory)
Operating System: Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala), using Wine 1.1.38

Red dots are the image that appears while COs are loading.
